We took a look at the Whirlpool line and found that the Whirlpool side by side refrigerator was a key component to this brand. We then reviewed these refrigerators based on a number of different criteria. When looking at the Whirlpool Side by Side refrigerator, we wanted to take into account two very basic principles of refrigerator use:

  1. How many people would be using the fridge? We chose to use a family of four -- adjust according to your family size.

  2. How often would the typical user of a Whirlpool Side by Side Refrigerator go food shopping in a given week?

Armed with that information as our basis, we also looked at:

  4. Ease of use
  5. Overall Appearance

(Since we know that appearances are subjective, you can take or leave our opinions on that!)

The Whirlpool Fridge Freezer also known as the Whirlpool Side by Side Refrigerators have a number of great features and come in a wide variety of price ranges.

There are 28 Whirlpool Side by Side Refrigerator models. Of course, there are others in the JennAir, KitchenAid, Amana and Maytag lines that are backed by the Whirlpool brand (since they are the parent company). But if you're looking for genuine Whirlpool, these are the ones you want to consider.

Special Features

There are a number of great features in the line of Whirlpool side by side refrigerators such as:

  • The In-Door-Ice ice dispensing system: This system allows you to place the ice dispenser and the ice collection bin in the freezer door instead of on the top shelf. This gives you easy access to ice and frees up valuable shelf space.

    The In-Door-Ice system can make and dispense ice as quickly as most standard ice makers (in fact in our tests, even faster in many cases). This system will also feed ice to an ice and water dispenser so you don't have to open the freezer door to get ice.


  • The Fast Fill Technology: which allows you to fill any size container twice as fast. The Fast Fill dispenser housing can easily accommodate both large and small containers and has a rotating faucet that can direct the water to the exact spot you need it. The filtration system of the Fast Fill models is designed to dispense water twice as fast as older Whirlpool side by side refrigerators giving you more, pure chilled water when you need it and without the wait.


  • Most of the Whirlpool Side by Side refrigerator models have Energy Star certification: Whirlpool currently has FORTY (40) refrigerators with the Energy Star label. An unprecedented percentage compared to many of the other brands out there.

    Best of all buying an Energy Star Refrigerator enables you to receive one of the Energy Star Rebates being offered by the US government.

  • Colors:  It comes in Satina or Faux Stainless Steel which is much easier to keep clean.


  • Efficiency:  It’s Energy Star qualified saving you money on your electric bill and entitling you to an Energy Star Rebate

  • Overview:  The Whirlpool side by side ED5KVEXVL is a great inexpensive refrigerator for a larger household. You get a great deal for not a huge price.


  • Capacity:  It has a 25.1 cubic foot interior which was more than enough room for most four person families and has an excellent use of space.


  • Notable Features: Most of the features worked well such as the Child Lockout, Crushed/Cubed Ice Dispenser, PuR Filtration System, Humidity Controlled Crisper, SpillGuard Glass Shelves, Adjustable Taller Clear Gallon Door Bins and the Whirlpool Adaptive Defrost System.


  • Colors: It comes in Black on Black, White on White, and Satina (Stainless look).


  • Efficiency: It’s Energy Star qualified which means lower power bills.

    • Overview: The ED5FVGXWS has a classic design that isn't overwhelming, but if you're looking for a solid side-by-side refrigerator that will perform flawlessly for years to come, this is one model you might want to consider.


    • Capacity: It has a nice large interior at 25.1 cu ft interior which makes it well designed and will meet the capacity needs of a family of four or more.


    • Notable Features: For this price range, it's nice to have the exterior water and ice dispenser as they make the entire unit feel like a much greater overall value. The EZ touch water and ice dispenser are a nice addition.


    • Colors: It comes in Stainless Steel finish only. Most of the time we don't recommend the stainless steel for families. Why spend 25% more and have the hassle of having to clean it so often? Though if you love stainless and don't care, this is one model to consider.
    • Efficiency: This refrigerator is Energy Star qualified.


    • MSRP: $1299.00 but check to see if it's on sale anywhere, usually it is lower than this.

    • Overview: The ED2KHAXVS is a bit pricier than similar models in the Whirlpool line, but we've found that most of the refrigerators in the Whirlpool Gold line are worth the extra money.


    • Style: This Whirlpool side by side refrigerator is loaded with looks. It's definitely one of the sleekest overall of all the Whirlpool side by side models.


    • Capacity: It has a 21.8 cubic foot interior which is a bit smaller but it almost fits as a counter depth refrigerator. While it is smaller, the interior space is well configured and ample.


    • Notable Features: We loved a number of the features on this fridge such as the a PUR water filtration system, a dispenser lockout, LCD Panel, and an adaptive defrost system.


    • Colors: This refrigerator comes in Black, White, Biscuit, Satina (Stainless look) and Stainless steel (which was the model we tested).


    • Efficiency: This refrigerator model is Energy Star qualified.
