Compact Refrigerators

Which Small Refrigerators Are Right For You?

Compact Refrigerators serve a wide variety of purposes. But to choose the right model for you, you need to figure out what your exact needs are before you head out to the appliance store (or online).

There are compact refrigerators that are perfectly suited for dorm use, but may be totally inappropriate for use in a boat or office.

The term "compact refrigerator" refers to everything from the dorm-room "mini-fridge" to portable refrigerators (also called "compact coolers") and beverage centers (refrigerators that are made to hold soda cans and bottles).

The name says it all, but these small refrigerators only have a limited amount of space and are intended to keep beverages and more 'snack food' items cool.

There are a wide variety of sizes, colors, and styles to choose from, and prices vary just as much.

Choosing the Right Compact Refrigerator for Your Needs

These refrigerators vary in size from the tiniest unit that has a mere four liter interior allowing you to store nothing more than a six pack to an actual refrigerator that has separate freezer and refrigerator doors.

The second kind typically has a decent amount of storage space and are usually referred to as apartment refrigerators.

The first thing to ask yourself is:

  • What are you going to be using this refrigerator for?

The real answer here lies in will it be for everyday use or more for occasional snacking like in an entertainment room.

  • How much room do you have for this small refrigerator?

This covers everything from the actual footprint of the refrigerator to how tall it can be. Does it have to fit under a desk or a counter or do you have actual space to put a full size apartment refrigerator?

  • If you need an extra small refrigerator like a compact cube, then will you need a small freezer unit for making ice cubes?

If you do need the freezer then just be aware that these freezers quite often don't do much than collect and freeze frost and will typically be the reason why you'll need to "defrost" your refrigerator. (The reason for this is that the freezer door is only a small piece of plastic and doesn't seal the cool air in and the moisture out.)

Once you've answered these questions you are ready to do some more serious looking.
