DO NOT BUY A MAYTAG FRENCH DOOR REFRIGERATOR!!


We bought one four years ago and have had a series of problems. The short list includes:

1. Doors not closing properly and requiring routine leveling
2. Water line freezing
3. Ice maker has broken several times (we opted for just using trays now)
4. Most recently the fan broke so the refrigerator did not cool.

Maytag does NOT stand behind their product and the claim for reliable and dependable appliances are in a word: FALSE.

I have made my pledge to the Maytag company that I will never buy another Maytag product. I recommend you do the same.

We have a four year old maytag refrigerator. The coil in the refrigerator section keeps freezing up. According to maytag's manual, the unit does not have a defrost heater, it uses the refrigeration coil to do the job. It simple does not work as they make a time estimate for how long and when to defrost. Every 3 to 4 months I have to unload the ref and let it sit for 8 hours just like a 1950s model. What a letdown.

We bought a new French door refrigerator which is their top line.
From day one it pops snaps and crackles 25 7. I’ve had the local repair man check it out and his comments where that’s very loud! The had me call Maytag direct and set a time for the technician to stop by and call the engineer dept. Which he did. The noise has gotten louder but the engineer claimed he could hear it. Repair guy just shook his head and said sorry.
Anyone else have these loud popping noises?

I have had my french door refrigerator for 3 years and have had the same problem twice. The refrigerator evaporator coil freezes up, not the freezer coil. According to the technician it is a design flaw. The first time he replaced a control module. This time the factory is telling him they now have a fix with a new microprocessor. I have the extended warranty but that doesn't help with spoiled food or no refrigerator for months. The last time it took almost 6 weeks for the new part. I don't know how long I am going to have to wait this time for a microprocessor. Never will I purchase a Maytag product again.

Every now and then for the past month my Maytag French door refrigerator goes on a three or four day sabbatical. All the lights go off on the front door panel and it just quits operating. The lights go on when the doors are opened but nothing else works. I unload all my food in the refrigerator compartment into coolers to wait it out. Three or four days later, after it's rested itself, it magically comes back to life! The last time I awoke to a lighted panel and an ice maker full of ice over night. Talked to an appliance expert on-line who says I need a new $400 control board. Can't understand why? All it seems to need is a rest! Have also had all the other problems listed in the other posts, plus more. The bottom wheel cover grill broke twice, the cover on the bottom try broke, the ice maker freezes up, the ice "pusher" broke, the freezer coils freeze up with ice, the drain clogs. etc. etc.

And you pay to put in the new parts and no guarentee it will work right then I froze things inside and will not hold constant temps, the sad think it is a piece of junk. My White Maytag French Door Refrigerator is the second one in only 16 1/2 years. It says Whirlpool inside however.
Had to have a rubber drain hose changed as the original hole was so tiny it clogged up all the time and there was water and ice accumulated inside the fridge and onto our floor. As that was a fault by the manufacturer, our repairman thought it should be done for free, but was not, the new hose has a much larger drain hole.
The "Hinged Seal" between the two doors rusted after only 3 years, it looks like dirt. Called Whirlpool and complained to no avail. Just phoned again but still no help, just buy a new part at for $121.98 and pay for labor.
The rubber gaskets are also in need of replacement, as water drips from the top of the doors when opened.

We purchased the french door with drawer in June 2016. The fridge has been serviced once. The fridge only cools to 45 degrees. We have it on the coldest temp but it doesn't cool lower than 45 degrees.Our food is spoiling, milk goes bad before the end date. Bacon spoils, cheese spoils. I will NEVER buy MAYTAG again. The ice maker is LOUD, gets backed up and just stops making ice. I am so frustrated with this purchase and will contact Best Buy where we bought it last year to see if we can swap it for something else. Shame on MAYTAG!

My Maytag French door refrigerator was 6 years old. in that time I had 3 major problems with it.
Freezer door did not close completely, repair required. Ice maker had to be replaced. one door made strange noise when closing. The last one was
freezer would not go below 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
Repair could go from $425. to who knows if leak was in the walls. At that point I junked it.

I brought my Maytag refrigerator side-by-side with bottom freezer in 2012.
8/6/2017 The computer panel on the front of the refrigerator stop working, it blinks only when you touch it, this has effected temperature, ice maker, etc. I HAD NO knowledge that Maytag products are just as bad as Samsung washing and dryers. Now I have to buy another one some how with being out of work... When you think your buying the best??? Maytag needs to make better product.

And as for our fridge open door problem it was being left open by us and after making sure to close the door right no more open door problem.

I purchased all Maytag appliances.well, the French door fridge ice maker broke twice, huge amount of ice in bottom of freezer,drips all over floor. Door alarm is random, so sometimes you have lights, sometimes you don't. Rust forming on handles, even with strict cleaning, oven handle has lost all stainless steel, and is now gray plastic. but at least the dishwasher works.....

Bought new Maytag fridge, stove microwave and dishwasher 6 years ago already had to replace the dishwasher and now the fridge door alarm goes off even though the door is closed, the inside light does not come on. Once you unplug the unit everything works again for about 30 minutes then starts over again, additionally, the outside stainless steel door developed rust streak before the first year and according to Maytag Rust is not covered under Warranty. Cant tell you how many time the freezer has developed ice on the bottom so the door will not shut and has to be De-thawed. I remember when the Maytag brand meant a quality product not so much any more

Boy did we make a mistake buying this piece of junk. The control light outside will not stay on. When you turn it on it goes back off. Also we cant get the ice maker to work. In the freezer drawer it frosts up and covers everything with frost. What a bad piece of junk for Maytag to put out. I will never buy anything again from Maytag or Whirlpool. Whirlpool makes Maytag.

Bought a Maytag French door refrigerator and have had to throw all of my food out several times a year due to the door not shutting properly. There is a door alarm, but it doesn't always sound. There is a temp alarm, but it only works if the temp decreases suddenly.

I have noticed other brands have the same issue. Instead of focusing on the bells and whistles companies ought to focus on getting the basic functioning of a refrigerator right.

Had the Maytag French door counter depth for 1 year. 7 months into it, the damper started making noises when opening. Technician came out and said it was ice build up on damper. He said since it was winter the ice had built up on it because the house was cool and come summer time it will disappear. While I was at work that day my wife let it go at that. Well here it is summer and I still have the damper noise. Now out of warranty and I still have the clicking. Never again will I purchase a Maytag

I too have had nothing but problems since I purchased my Maytag french door refrigerator. After only a couple of years, one morning I found water all over the floor, as the condenser had gone out. This weekend the entire computer system failed... had to buy a new refrigerator, but I will never purchase a french door again. My repair tech says that he sees nothing but problems with the french door models, as they are computer-driven. Back to Kenmore for a side-by-side, more dependable and affordable.

You might have a greener environment if it was not for all the Maytag junk in the landfill. If it was built to last like they claim, but than again you can claim anything. Purchased two Neptune washers when they first came out, what a fail junk after 6 years. In the wall stove light burnt out in two weeks, cannot remove the cover without removing the whole back panel, another fail. A candle would of been better and worked longer. Our last thing from them ever is the 200 pound french door refrigerator sitting in our kitchen, day one water froze in the bottom freezer every two months tear it apart to fix, ice maker well that list is endless, lastly circuit board bit the dust. Called their help line never got through, tried the chat line, was told to try again which I tried again and again and again. Lastly sent them an email with the model and serial number, never a reply. Samsung will be here shortly, and will replace it all with SAMSUNG till the cows come home. At least when they have a problem the own up to it, instead of finding new ways to produce more stuff for the landfill.

Bought a Maytag French Door fridge little over a year ago. The ice maker has gone out and now we're getting that ANNOYING "power outage" alarm every few minutes, even though the power is just fine.

We hit the reset button, it resets, and within a minute or two, it does it again. I've correlated the "power outage" alarm to a motor of some kind (compressor?) stopping momentarily. Could be a problem with that as opposed to a circuit board problem that is just reacting to the motor stoppage? Good God what will THIS cost me?? Just out of a crappy 12-month "warranty" of course. What is THAT all about?? Pay $2600 for a "quality" item and it has all this going on?

SUMMARY: NEVER, NEVER AGAIN BUY MAYTAG/WHIRLPOOL!

Like most of the people on here. Bought $2300.00 + fridge with the Maytag company from HHGregg. Piece of crap!!!! Service call less than 2 years for a $250.00 evaporator motor. Glad I am selling my house and someone else will have to deal with it from now on because I am kinda taking this as a sign. I neve new this product was made in Mexico until today. $250.00 to learn never give Maytag another $ of my money. What a crappy line of products. Just worthless!!!!

My Maytag is 3 years old and is the worst nightmare because after repairs, I still can not trust it. It leaks water repeatedly and makes a mess every time. It has been repaired by two different repairmen, but still is leaking and freezing up in bottom. It can't be donated because it is not properly repaired.

I replace all my appliances with Maytag, believing the commercial. . You know the repairman that has nothing to do.. well he's now working at my house. all have been repaired within the last 1 1/2 years. The first French Door refrigerator delivered was plugged in for over 12 hours and was still Hot. Of course they replaced the unit. but it has problems the bottom shelf always has water under it, freezer not cold enough to keep ice cream, ice maker is now broken again and at 1 1/2 years old its out of major warranty. I must pay for Labor and some parts.
I am 65 years old and have had appliances in the past last 10 years are more but they don't make them like they use to.. but 1 1/2 years is totally unacceptable.
Life is too short to fret over appliances that don't work. In fact I just replaced my Maytag front load washer (loud noises tub unstable) with LG and It's very efficient.. One by one the others are gone as well.
Moral to this long story... don't buy Maytag they are not what they claim to be..

I purchased a Maytag washer and dryer set. The washers stopped working within 4 years. I replaced it and now I am having a problem with my Maytag Refrigerator. It ices up and I have to defrost it by hand every 3 weeks. It too is only 4 years old. I called Maytag and they were of no help. Please, do yourself a favor and NEVER, NEVER BY A MAYTAG APPLIANCE. If you have ice building up in the bottom of the freezer remove the back panel/compressor cover. Where the drain tube exits the freezer pull off the rubber piece on the end of the tube and trim with sissors about 3/16 of an inch off of the bottom end to increase the opening slightly. It clogs shut there.reinstall the rubber fitting and put the rear cover back on. Then try to melt either with hot water or heat the drain opening in the bottom middle back of the freezer until it is open. This will fix your problem.

Ever since we purchased this piece of crap in 11/2013 we have had service on it more than five times. The compressor crapped out twice and lost all of our food due to unfreezing. Now we are having issues with an alarm going off stating that there was a power outage... Our power is fine. I will never purchase a maytag product ever again. Maytag needs to recall this as others are having the same issue.

When my MFF model began "popping" loudly when the compressor contactor kicked in I thought it was just a giant cheap part, and I would put up with it.

But when the popping became intermittant with "stuttering" sounds, I looked up recalls.

The same problem was encountered, fires were caused, and those parts were recalled, but only on the models without bottom drawer freezers.

Did they do a "shuffle" of recalled parts?

Called a Technician, he would not turn the refrigerator off to test the sound. He was not sure it would start up again? I asked, " waht about outages"?....no answer

I trusted the Maytag brand since those were the appliances that my parents purchased. Today, the Maytag brand no longer represents great quality. The compressor for my French Door Refrigerator had to be replaced twice. The water line froze and I was instructed by a customer service representative to use a blow dryer to thaw it out. I told them to send the Maytag repair man from the commercials.
I will not be purchasing any Maytag brands appliances in the future.

Brand new stainless 2014 model. I'm a single guy and after pressing on the buttons probably only 20 times the words completley wiped off!!!

They replaced the whole panel and the words wiped off even quicker than before!! Dam words wipe off the a dry eraser. They are coming out for the third time and if they bring me the same buttons..well screw that i want a new fridge free of charge!

Well I've had mine now 2 years first problem was ice build up in the freezer called up it was 2 days out of the 1 year warranty and the guy on the phone says they have a new piece that fixes the issue. Well they wanted me to pay 150 bucks for this piece yet they know the other SaaS defective. I said no and fixed the issue myself with some parts around the house. Well last month the ice maker stopped working some of the Copper in the monitor area is missing like it burned away so I ordered a new one now it just dumps water I'm never buying anything Maytag or whirlpool again

My Maytag french door refrigerator goes out and quits every time we have bad weather. We lose everything in the unit. I usually unplug it. We have never determined how long it usually takes before it resets and comes on. We usually lose all of the ice in the ice maker which is the first hint that the fridge is not working. What a pain in the butt……
Never will buy Maytag EVER AGAIN!

A bag of ice in an ice chest is MUCH MORE DEPENDABLE!

We bought the French Door Maytag September 2013 and the compressor just went out of it. The appliance store sent a repairman to determine the problem. Scheduled pick-up a couple days ago and were to let me know how long we would be without and still waiting for the call. We have food stuffed in coolers with ice!! What a pain. They said the model I have has compressor issues and they have been hauling one a week to the shop. If you are not going to buy a Maytag, don't buy a Whirlpool either because that's who makes it!

 Icemaker jams

The Icemaker jams about every 3 or 4 days. It creates ice and the cubes are sort of stuck together and when they are ejected into the bin the push the overflow arm up and get stuck. So we get up in the morning and no new ice. I have had it replaced twice going on the 3rd time. I have Had it. Hoping I can invoke the lemon clause, 3 years old.

My Maytag French-door fridge has been repaired twice since 2007 when I purchased it. It was the icemaker. Now the electronic panel has to be replaced, and repairman does not know when it will be in. There are none available! The ice/water dispenser flaps constantly and the lights are all flashing. Every now and then, it returns to normal and actually works! I think I have a large expensive monster 👾 on my hands.

In 2006 I purchased a Maytag fridge model MFI2568AEQ. This thing is the biggest POS I have ever owned. Had problems with this thing from the beginning. Always had problems with the icemaker. After it was only 3 years old, the main circuit board went out. Thankfully we had an extended warranty that covered it. But we were without a fridge for 1 month. Fast forward to January 2014. Same thing happened with the main circuit board. The part was on backorder and after no fridge for 2 months, I find out that I am waiting for a part that will never come because Maytag has informed me they no longer make the part. They suggest I have it repaired. Got my son to pull it out and repair it.(had nothing to lose at this point) Put it back in and now I am unable to reprogram it.Followed directions I found with fridge with no luck. Tryed different ways with no success. There must be a secret to doing this. Guess who wishes she had never seen this refrigerator. I will never ever buy a Maytag anything ever again!!!

I thought I'd purchased the best--found out Maytag/Whirpool doesn't back their promise of dependable and reliable products. The only apologize for 5-6 wk delay in parts availability for a product they now say has been replaced due to innovation. What a crock. 6 yr old appliance and no parts availability--then the exeuctives say buy AMERICAN!! Where is the quality when a $2600 appliance dies after 6 years.

bought May 28th, 2013 waiting for 90 days for parts to repair major flaw with ice dispenser. Even the headquarters executive department says part will be there in 30 days, that was 3 weeks ago. I do not believe it will come. So I've put a dispute in with credit card so I will get full refund and refrigerator removed. THIS FRIDGE IS A LEMON!!!!!

Purchased Matag side by side w/bottom freezer as a Valentines gift March 2013. We paid a little more than $2500.modle #MFT2976AEM00.I thought I was getting one of the best. NOT! 2 months later the gasket inside the door was filled with ice, small amounts of water was dripping down the inside freezer door. I called the service man; it is still under warranty. About 5 weeks later the part arrived and it seemed to be fixed,for about 2 weeks and the same problem began again. Called a second time to day 7/24/2013 and the buttons that say Ice/water have rubbed off after 5 months. I also would not recommend stainless steel. Water marks and little hand prints are to noticeable.it scratches very easily. I have not had problems with my Matag washer/dryer or flat rang oven. YET!

I purchased this refrigerator in . I have already had to have the icemaker replaced for failure and the bins keep freezing my vegetables. The temp is turned down but it doesn't help. Now the rubber gasket keeps coming off the icemaker inside the door. Will never buy another Maytag product again.

We bought a Maytag French Door refrigerator five years ago. We have had absolutely no problems except the bottom drawer lid broke due to my own fault. We love this refrigerator.

 Cannot adjust temperature

Bought this fridge in May 2005. Had to be repaired within the first year and again in the second year. Ever since then have had a temperature problem. Cannot keep the fridge part from freezing even though temperature is turned way down. Have thrown out tons of produce because it freezes. Will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER buy Maytag again. I have to replace the fridge and it's extremely disappointing because a $1300.00 fridge should last longer than this. DO NOT BUY MAYTAG.

I bought a french door Maytag frig. Just had all 3 doors replaced today because the surface looked like someone took steel wool to it in a circular motion. now one new door has some scratch look marks.How many times will they replace doors till they get it right!

Bought in aug of 2008. died in feb of 2012. not even 4 years. About $500 a year to own. compressor loses refridgerant. trustworthy tech says it's bad. hi side tap that is supposed to evaporate water in drip pan is corroded by the water it is supposed to eliminate and water enters system and contaminates components in system. he said better off just buying another fridge. maytag was bought by Whirlpool soooooo use discretion when buying their product. for the good it will do i'm buying a Fridgidaire

I purchased this Maytag French door refrig. in 12/06 and it worked well for a while.

Then the ice maker started freezing. They told me I needed another ice maker so I purchased another one. Soon after it too
started freezing.

They told me I need a new water valve so I replaced the water valve. It also worked well for a while, then it started icing up again. (Are you beginning to see a pattern here?)

Now the latch for the ice bin is broken and it is still freezing up.

I will never buy a Maytag appliance again. No one can fix it.

What has happened to the Maytag dependability?

 Maytag Refrigerator Part Failures

Since October of 2006 my Maytag Refrigerator, model 4MFC2061HE has failed twice. Once at the 3 year mark (Oct 2009)it needed a new Keyboard Pad to control Temps. Then it was found after that part was installed that the main board/Interface board was also defective. It took 13 days downtime total for repairs.

Two years later on 9/20/2011 the refrigerator continued to run the compressor and the interior temperature was at the 32 Degree mark.

The water line inside was only gave off slushy ice water. I unplugged the refrigerator and let it come back to normal temp range.

To assist in maintaining temperatures inside I plugged it into a 24 hour automatic timer. I set the on period to 60 to 75 minutes and the off time to about 3 hours. I kept checking every few hours (even at night) to keep food in the freezer and upper fridge from spoilng.

It seems the parts are made in Mexico so who knows what kind of quality controls there are.

I am thoroughly Disgusted with this refrigerator and the problems I have had with it.

Will think long and hard about buying another Maytag Fridge.

 Maytag French Door Refrigerator Problems

We're about to have a repair man come by for the second compressor replacement in 3 years.

Fortunately we have an extended warranty but who wants to have to go through this every two or three years? We are sorely disappointed with this refrigerator.

If you close one door too hard the other opens and will not close. It has been a terrible product and they (Maytag) don't seem to want to admit it or stand behind their product beyond the 1 year warranty.

The last time the repair person warned us it was likely it would happen again. Sadly she was right.

If you don't have a warranty your money would be better spent on a new refrigerator.

We bought Maytag fridge model MZD2665HEW five years ago. The compressor went out this past week.

This happened, of course, just a couple months past 5 year warranty. The estimated repair cost is close to $600.00. What a joke?!?!?

A refrigerator costing that much should last many years of trouble free usage. With all the problem Maytag has had, you would think they would extend their warranty to try keep customers.

 Maytag Refrigerator Ice Maker Trouble/Lights Flashing/Fridge Not Cooling

Our trouble started with our Maytag Refrigerator when the ice trap door flapping open and shut on it's own--with all the display light flashing.

Called a technician (not Maytag's) and he was sure it was the control panel. He said he couldn't get another one because they were on back order.

I called Maytag. In the meantime, it quit cooling in the fridge.

Long story short--MANY calls to Maytag. On week THREE of no fridge. Maytag knows this part has caused much trouble (because they offered to pay for the part and labor outside of warranty limits). They had 880 control panels on backorder. I was told it might take a total of a month to get it in, ship it to me and get me set up with one of their techs to install it.

I bought a new Samsung today.

 Door alarm not

I have a Maytag french door refrigerator and the door alarm keeps going off and the doors are closed.

We've pressed the button and turned off the alarm but it comes back on and starts beeping again.

Does anyone know how to turn the alarm off so it will not come back on?

 Problems from the start

We bought a Maytag, French door/freezer on bottom in 2006.

Two days after it was delivered, the electric panel went out. They replaced the entire refrigerator.

Two years later it happened again. That time, they replaced the panel.

Now (2010) the electric panel is blinking, the ice flap is flapping and after a little research.... I believe there is a short in the electric panel.

I'm hoping I don't have a electrical fire before it can be fixed.

 Refrigerator no longer cold

I bought a Maytag French Door refrigerator 4/5 years ago. It was NOT cheap (@$1,800).

Yesterday, the refrig. portion stopped cooling. I turned up the dial (to make it cooler) and a fan-sounding noise came on and ran and ran and ran....no cool air.

A repair person is coming out tomorrow and I hope it is not too expensive. A fridge costing this much should last more than 4.5 years!!

I will not buy Maytag again. I had a big problem with my Maytag washer, too.

Replaced it with a Bosch which I love! I may end up doing the same with this fridge, which I loved...until yesterday.

 We Made the Same Mistake

We made the same mistake when we bought a Maytag French Door refrigerator 5.5 years ago.

So far:

  • The water line has frozen several times

  • A shelf has bowed though I've never exceeded the weight limit

  • And today the refrigerator section has stopped cooling


I'm thinking of replacing the refrigerator all together. All of this happened in a few years, so I expect that it should probably break down again soon.
