GE Bottom Freezer Refrigerator Nightmare!!!

by Tina
(Denver, CO)

I bought a bottom freezer GE model number GDS18LBRAWW in 2004 and have had nothing but problems since.

The repair man has been out so many times we are on a first-name basis.

It is always the same problem:

  • Vegetables in the vegetable bin are freezing
  • Shredded cheese in the other bin is frozen

The repair man has come out to defrost some fan in the back several times, replaced the styrofoam liner in the freezer, and the last time sealed the liner.

If I turn the freezer temperature down, the items in the freezer start defrosting; if I turn the temperature down in the refrigerator, the milk sours.

I am at my wit's end. I spent $999, which was a significant expense for me, but I felt this was a reliable company and that this refrigerator would outlast me. I called repair again after the repair man was here three weeks ago.

I have expressed my situation the GE consumer affairs and was told they would give me a discount if I bought another GE product. Why would I do that? I asked for a partial refund so that I could replace this with something reliable. I am waiting for their response. They did offer $300 towards another GE product.

I also took out an extended warranty as I have had many problems with this refrigerator. They do offer a replacement rate when the product is deemed unrepairable. This comes from the repairman reporting this. Then it has to go before some committee to determine whether they will give me a monetary judgment. This takes time, and in the meantime, I am left with a defective product.

I am at my wit's end. In my retirement, I have to deal with a product I spent good money on that is always in repair.

I would not recommend buying any GE appliances.

BAD FRENCH DOOR DESIGN GE.
by: Anonymous

I have a GE deluxe model French Door, bottom freezer. The doors never worked right due to the fact that the gaskets rub together and shred or come off. There is no flap on the door to prevent air from getting in like the OTHER brands of french door fridges. I have repair people here so often I'm ready to set up a guest room for him. We have an expensive service contract because we can't afford NOT to. This is the 3rd fridge I've owned in 49 yrs and the other two were disgarded while still working perfectly. We bought this when we remodeled our kitchen and it looks beautiful but working wise it's a HUGE LEMON. GE refuses to step up to the plate and replace it, even though one of their own reps told us it was a bad design which has been rectified in their later model!!!!

I am Fed Up With My GE Frig!
by: Kathy

I too have the same GE frig model GDS18LBRAWW and it has been a piece of crap since the day I bought it.

I remember being so excited finally being able to get a new fridge that would allow me to at least have COLD milk! Well to my surprise the very next day the thing was not cooling.

So I called the place where i bought it Adams-Columbia Co-op in Friendship, WI and they came and put a new fan in. The stupid thing still never cooled right. If i wanted cold milk I had to put ice cubes in it!!!

Now it totally quit working again & they said it was plugged because this model does not drain... They came & thawed something out and it worked..that is for a week.

Last night I had to take everything out again and start all over. It's just damn ridiculous, people can not afford to keep replacing this crap!!! Why doesn't GE just close their damn doors and sell their crap only to the country in which they have their garbage made!!!!!

I challenge any GE corporate executive & his family to put the crap that they sold me in their house!!!
