Kitchen Aid Superba Side by Side Counter Depth Refrigerator Model KSCS251

by Naomi
(Dallas, TX)

I have had the Kitchen Aid Superba Counter Depth Side-by-Side refrigerator model KSCS251 for almost 5 years. We chose this model, despite it's higher price at the time, to match the other appliances in our kitchen and to fit the space the builders obviously designated for the refrigerator.

Regretfully, I will have to admit that I hated this appliance. From the get-go, we had issues with the Ice-Maker constantly getting stuck (the ice at the bottom would appear to have melted a bit and then completely froze into an unbreakable block).

Also, the water would constantly drip from the dispenser and trail down the front of the door.

Recently, the water somehow dripped down into the compartment underneath the ice bin inside the door, then froze. The problem is that it completely warped the door shape and broke the plastic parts of the exterior section of the ice dispenser as the water froze and expanded.

Consequently, I am back in the market to purchase a refrigerator. I actually still have an effective warranty, but I am just weary of wresting the constant quirkiness of this refrigerator.

I read great reviews about Kitchen Aid, but I apparently purchased the one bad apple!

Piece of expensive junk imo NEW
by: Anonymous

I too bought this when we redid our kitchen. It has been broken for 4yrs now! I am told that it will cost around $700 to repair. First the water stopped flowing, then the icemaker went kaput then the refrigerator stopped cooling then only the bottom two shelves of freezer would get suck with ice, then even that stopped freezing.
I had repair man in and he said I need a new thermometer system which would be $700. I am at my witts end. I am using a borrowed one in the garage but I live in south Fl so that is costing a lot in FPL. I keep checking prices for similar friges and they have not gone down.

Multiple Problems With a Multiple Parts NEW
by: Anonymous

Don't buy the KitchenAid fridge. Definitely not living up to the hype. Ice maker is the pits. Dispenser, no crushed or cubes being dispensed. I pray the company will look at improving this. A major part was replaced because fringe was not freezing or cooling on non-freezer side, and fan on freezer said was not blowing.

I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS PRODUCT. A FIG SHOULD LAST LONGER THAN 12 YEARS. RIDICULOUS!

Kitchen Aid refrigerator

I also have had problems with the ice maker and the freezer section becoming jammed with ice.

I have had the repair man out 4 times and finally he was able to put in an ice maker that worked. I have had to manually defrost it numerous times ( hairdryer on back freezer compartment).

Recently it has been making a strange noise. I called the repairman who said it was an electronic part stopping the refrigerator from cooling. The part is not available for replacement and the extended warranted contract says they would give me $800. for my $3,000 refrigerator which is under 10 years old and very carefully maintained.

I would NEVER purchase another Kitchen Aid or Whirlpool product.

We too experience ice maker problems. It quit making ice several times, but I found a fix on the internet. We use a hair dryer on the line and after a while the ice will start flowing again. Until the next time it stops.,.,. NOW for some reason it seems to either leak or just not freeze or overflow, because there are continuous icicles hanging down from the ice maker to the bottom of my freezer. Any items within the drop zone are now frozen solid to the shelves. Anyone have this problem?

Very Unhappy with this unit
by: Chip

I've hated this unit since day 1. The ice maker is crap. Never worked properly. The ice dispenser thaws then re-freezes and jams up, leaks out and down the front onto our hard wood floors. I bought a repair kit for the ice dispenser door flap, but the kits came with parts but no instructions. Nothing on line either. Also, because our unit is a cabinet depth model, the fridge door closes on the drawers and cracks them. It won't remain open, just closes on your arm and the drawers. Poor engineering, design, and customer satisfaction. They know there are problems, but don't care or won't help you.

Must Have a Good One

Hopefully this does not jinx me. HA

I've had this fridge for about 10 years, the only problem was the ice maker also. Ice jammed and finally broke the cheap plastic gear that disabled the ice maker, replaced that and all has been well. It was replaced with a brass gear which is what should have been standard). Cost saving is not good. Sorry about the bad "apples".

Ice Maker
by: Ladydi in AZ

Not happy that the Ice Maker only lasted a short time and have other friends that say the same thing about theirs. Is there a model of ice maker that would last longer than 4-5 years?

Won;t buy again! Replaced icemaker
by: Anonymous

We bought the KitchenAid because we redid our kitchena nd wanted the counter-depth model. Already owned a fairly new (3 years) KITCHENAID and liked it fine. Put the old one in the basement and the counter-depth upstairs. Icemaker broke within the second year. Because we had the one in the basement, we waited a couple of years to replace it, but we finally did. $115.00 for the part! It lasted about a little under 2 years again. We have no kids, just my husband and me. We use it often enough, but not too often. We just waited another year before breaking down and buying another icemaker. The reason? The door cam broke and the door had to be forcefully closed. The part was $12 but service for both the cam and the icemaker was $115 plus parts.

Never again will I buy a KitchenAid.

LOVE it

We had none of these problems....seeing there are only 2 posts I would say that is pretty good for such a huge company!

Favorite thing is water filter!

Hate this refrigerator!
by: Anonymous

I also own the Kitchen Aid Superba, and have had the same issue with the ice maker. This is the third time it has broken, and I refuse to pay to have it fixed again. Tonight, I had to once again empty out the freezer and refrigerator because everything started melting in the freezer, and the refrigerator was warm. This is the third time this has happened, and thank god I have a spare refrigerator in my freezer. My old refrigerator is 20 years old, it has never had any issues ever! It is a Maytag. My Kitchen Aid drawers are also cheaply made. They have all just about cracked! I am so disappointed with Kitchen Aid, that I no longer will purchase any of their products.
