Kenmore Bottom Freezer (model #596.65269) Is Actually an Amana Made by Whirlpool?!?!

by Dorothy J.
(Houston, TX USA)

We purchased our Kenmore bottom freezer refrigerator(model #596.65269)just over 1.5 years ago and the refrigerator and freezer quit cooling this week.

The service man indicated that the refrigerator was probably an Amana manufactured for Kenmore in Whirlpool's Mexico factory. Whirlpool owns Amana.

Today, the Sears service man quoted $625.00 to replace the compressor along with related work.

The unit is only 20 months old and out of warranty. We contacted the Kenmore/Sears customer service representative by phone. Noting the refrigerator's age, we asked Sears to consider sharing in the cost of the repair.

Their response was "NO."

We concluded that the $625 repair cost was too much due to the unit's poor durability.

The limited 30 and 60 day warranty offered by Sears on the repair parts/labor and Sears' disinterest in "standing behind" their product didn't help either.

In addition to all this; Sears collected $69 from us, their service call fee.

No, we do not recommend this refrigerator. Nor, will we purchase another Kenmore, Whirlpool or Amana as its replacement.

research is key!!

I don't understand people who don't research such a high-dollar product before purchasing it. I have been researching refrigerators for weeks now and one of the first things I found out was that the Kenmore name is just a badge put on the refrigerator for Sears. The refrigerator is actually made by any number of companies, including, but not limited to, Amana, Whirlpool, GE, LG, etc.

Also, I would like to point out that whenever anyone purchases a high-dollar product like this, it is best to get the extended warranty. Sears sells a 5 year warranty for less than $300 which also includes a repairman coming out once a year to do maintenance.

In addition to Kenmore and Amana, Whirlpool owns JennAir and Maytag.

Stay away from all of them.
