Can't Clean My LG Stainless Steel Refrigerator!!!

by LaRue B.
(USA)

I can't clean my LG stainless steel refrigerator which I purchased (from R.C. Wiley) in July 2009.

I need help desperately. I don't know if it is a defect or what.

The stainless steel can not be cleaned on the outside (stainless steel color) and due to the tall water
dispenser, water constantly spills.

Can someone offer a suggestion because this stainless steel refrigerator cost over $2000.00 and I am almost in tears everyday because it always looks so dirty.

I need help. Please.

Finally!! NEW
by: Tracy

I have had this refrigerator for just over a year. I was recently divorced and don't have the money that I used to. Bought this LG because I love the size and the bottom freezer. It is very difficult to keep clean. Used glass cleaner on it EVERY day and worked pretty well. About 8 months ago, the bottom freezer became smudgy, streaky and filthy looking. I tried everything. Someone here suggested orange glo which I happened to have and used it today with a microfiber cloth! It looks great. Still a couple little smudges but 95% better than it was. I am so happy.Thank you

Horrible streaking finish on my refrig NEW
by: Bonny

This LG refrigerator has such a great design, outside door for beverages, great ice maker, etc. But the finish is garbage. LG must stand for Life's Grody when you buy their products. No matter what I use, even mineral oil, the streaks return in no time and the refrigerator always looks bad. Who sat in the board room to figure this out? Some idiot that must have decided he wouldn't have LG products-like the rest of us after we purchased them!

"fake" stainless steel comments are also FAKE..read this NEW
by: Michael Marks.GAMCO

Firstly, I am the former owner and founder of GAMCO, a manufacturer of stainless steel bathroom accessories, such as grab bars, towel dispensers, waste receptacles etc.. I have bought and manufactured items from over 5 million pounds in my years, as well as been to stainless mills all over , so I am absolutely an expert on stainless steel.
TRUTH: there are different grades of stainless. CHROMIUM is what makes STEEL into STAINLESS STEEL, and TYPE 430 stainless IS MAGNETIC( ferritic( because it does NOT have NICKET. Stainless steel with NICKEL is NON MAGNETIC ( austenitic) and has much more resistance to rust. ALL stainless steel grades can rust. LG uses the CHEAP magnetic TYPE 430 stainless, that is why the magnet sticks. ALSO, there are different FINISHES.. we ASSUMED we would get the good finish, the high luster satin finish #4, but we got the much uglier #3 coarse grain satin, which is much harder to clean and looks not as beautiful as our other appliances that are all #4 high luster satin. The sample we looked at was the good stainless, TYPE 304 #4...we got the cheap stuff, TYPE 430 #3. .Using a OIL BASED cleaner, such as ZEP, or as some people said WD-40, baby oil etc....is better then the foaming cleaners, but there will NEVER be a way to get the door to look like we want....they USED the CHEAPER grade, and the cheaper finish! All we can do is clean it often or forget about it, or if we can afford it buy another brand, and take a magnet with you , and upon delivery use the magnet to verify type 304, and use your eyes to verify the finish is the beautiful #4. The COARSER GRAIN #3 finish, like we all got...is much harder to clean , because of its; coarseness that has fewer grains per inch, while the #4 fine grain finish has much more grains, and therefore , fewer "crevices between the grains for dirt. PLUS, the #4 WET POLISH, which is what we all want, is made with sanding belts that are wet, so it also produces that high luster finish. I was VERY picky when I purchased stainless steel for my company and always inspected each incoming shipment to be the correct item..( using a magnet to prove it was TYPE 304 stainless ( the nickel content is what makes it non magnetic as well as much more rust resistant. ) and we used physical inspection to insure that we got #4 fine grain high luster satin finish...I personally look and get upset at my dishwasher every day.....being an expert, as well as a former owner of a huge stainless steel fabrication company, it is VERY annoying....PS , they saved on my dishwasher was maybe $30 ! YOu can copy and paste my comment and send it to LG and maybe they might purchase the "good stuff" in the future and stop telling people "cosmetic " flaws do not count.....as it is NOT a flaw, it was a decision THEY make to purchase the cheaper stainless with the cheaper finish.. You would you think they would want their products to look beautiful in your home, and get great reviews in lieu of all these horror storied and unhappy people. All for a relative small amount of money. It is a shame, as their design of the dishwasher and its operation is impeccable, which is why I still have it, it does a great job cleaning the dishes. But, there is not a day that goes by that I do not look at it with disgust......there is also a possibility that the "real" company that makes this for them ( I doubt they actually own a factory for this item and have their own employees actually fabricate this) but rather they probably sub contract it out and perhaps they are so in the blind, they themselves do not check these things... it IS STAINLESS STEEL, but the TYPE 430 cheaper grade that rusts easier, and more importantly, has the much less attractive and much easier to stain #3 rough grain finish. I was not present when this was delivered and installed...hence why I have this here.....SO ALWAYS take a MAGNET when buying ANYTHING that is stainless steel and make sure you get TYPE 304 ( 18-8 is also the name ..18% chromium and 8% NICKEL) and do NOT bet type 430 stainless steel or ( strait 18%) which has 18% chromium, thus making it truly stainless steel, but ZERO percent NICKEL. In my day in the 70-90", some of my competition used the cheaper type 430 and passed it over as type 304....so, I had ALL my reps and customers educated about this and also provided large magnets so they could show the architects how the competitors lied.....needless to say, these days that competitor used type 304 stainless after they were exposed as liars time and time again....I even wrote an article back then "WHAT IS STAINLESS STEEL) and it explained the various grades, various finished ( for interest.....#8 finish is MIRROR finish or high polish finish that you see in elevators and other uses), explained gauges, or thicknesses of metal ( many of my competitors used thinner metals, another way to cheat, while we used thicker then specified to give much more strength) 18 gauge versus 22 gauges ( and the 18 gauge is THICKER, as the lower the number the thicker the metal. Anyway, I can talk about stainless steel for hours.......but the bottom line...we all got ripped off, but there was no fraud, just a terrible decision on their part., or their ignorance of it...thanks..Mike

NEVER Buy LG Stainless Steel Frig NEW
by: Melody

We bought an LG stainless steel side-by-side frig, it was beautiful when we bought it but I CANNOT GET IT CLEAN. I've had stainless steel appliances for the last 20 yrs and when we replaced the frig and dishwasher i've been annoyed ever since. I simply cannot get the marks off the front of them. I've tried: distilled water, warm vinegar, warm vinegar s/ water, alcohol (to remove the oils), stainless steel cleaner, baking soda paste then distilled water then vinegar, tried soap and water. I think next is fire because i'm so over this!! I cannot stand for it to constantly look like we have a bunch of greasy handed pigs living here. I will never ever buy this crap again.

I Will NEVER Buy LG Again
by: Kimberly

We built our home last year and bought LG Kitchen appliances. I regretted the decision immediately after moving inmmI’ve had cheaper SS appliances that cleaned up much more easily and looked better. I’ve tried many products but the only one I’ve had any luck with, which isn’t saying much, is SprayAway Ammonia Free glass cleaner in a can. They have a SS Cleaner but it was harder to wipe off and smudged more. If we hadn’t put so much money into this house I’d be kicking these appliances to the curb! Unfortunately, I’m stuck. Good luck!

um, stainless isn't magnetic NEW
by: just an artist

To everyone saying that stainless steel is not metal because it's not magnetic, go find anything stainless--a kleen kanteen, cabinets in your local food truck or restaurant, a stainless frying pan--and see if a magnet sticks to that. Stainless is a composite metal, it's not steel. Steel would rust. And good quality stainless has enough non rusting metal in it to make it non magnetic. And it is stain-less steel, not stain-free steel. The name says it all. When I was little, my dad made a stainless steel bracelet for me from a pipe at the dairy plant he worked in. It never rusted or corroded in the many years I wore it. I only removed it when I became worried that I was growing fast enough that I might not be able to remove it.

But yes, cleaning is important and I truly appreciate that people are posting their successes and frustrations. And I hope everyone who has visited has found a method that works for them. I hope to learn from everyone's experience.

LG door cleaning results NEW
by: Anonymous

Just like everyone else, I've tried to clean these doors and it seems they just get worse. After reading so many comments I decided to try something I've had in my cleaning arsenal for some time. Bar Tenders Friend for glass cooktops. I hated it on my glass cooktop, never did a good job. BUT it worked on this horrible LG fake stainless steel. It looks new. Trick though: spread it on with the grain. Rinse if off with warm water only. dry with microfiber cloth. Good luck!

Cleaning LG refridgerator NEW
by: Anonymous

I have read tons of comments. The instructions say to just use soap and water which has kept my fridge clean. I only had problems when I hired house cleaners. They obviously sprayed right onto the fridge and so their are drip marks. Don’t do this! Spray onto your cloth and then wipe. But now that it is spotted I will try a bunch of the suggestions.

Solution
by: Anonymous

I had the same problem and came here hoping someone had a solution- all my LG stainless appliances looked terrible, stained and streaky and nothing worked. I finally found a solution on Google from HGTV. Use vinegar in a spray bottle and rub with a clean cloth to remove the stains. The say to rub in the direction of the grain but it didn’t really seem to matter. Then, once it’s clean, rub lightly with olive oil to protect it from new fingerprints and stains. I didn’t believe it but it worked so well! My appliances look like new. It did take some work because they were really dirty but vinegar is cheap!
Try it - hope it works for you too"

Budget Friendly cleaners NEW
by: Shanno

I purchased some stainless steel microfiber towels from Home Goods.
Two ways I have achieved success :
1. Use stainless steel wipes (purchased at grocery store or Home Goods). Clean door with a wipe then wipe off residue with ss microfiber towel. I use one wipe per door.
Or
2. Fill a spray bottle 1/4 white distilled vinegar and 3/4 *distilled water. Spray onto stainless steel microfiber towel and clean doors.* Distilled water is key. (I have a water softener as our water is really hard).

Water stuck in between glass shelves NEW
by: Claremont Resident

I agree 200%! What a design flaw!!! You have to remove the whole bin to get to remove water seeped in between the glass?? I can’t even remove the whole bin! Even the repairman who came to check the cooler compressor which broke down and which I heard there’s a class action lawsuit last year, is shaking his head not knowing what to do.

Awful SS Door
by: JD and JG

I am so glad my Google query of" Why Can't I Clean My LG SS Refrigerator Door" brought me to this page. I see we are not alone in our frustration. We are so disappointed with the finish of our just over a year old LG refrigerator. We no longer even try to clean it because it won't stay clean. We are just two senior citizens living here and are careful about touching the door but the grease and dust of everyday life and occasional touching should be able to be cleaned off. The front has really bad smears near the bottom for some reason. It is brushed stainless but ends up looking like smudged stainless. Any spot cleaning leaves a mess. About 6 weeks after the warranty was up we noticed the plastic trim around one of the glass shelves was cracked. A call to the company was a waste of time. We have an LG washer and dryer and have had an LG tv. Apparently, customer loyalty means nothing because they would not give us a new shelf. With all of these complaints it seems that the company would want to make it right with all of the complainants and replace the appliances, or doors, with ones that clean like SS should. Our customer loyalty to LG has, sadly, been lost.

Eureka! We have found it! NEW
by: Mark & Lynn

Eureka! We have found it!!
Reading the posts made us feel better and laugh, because misery loves company! And we also cannot get our LG SS exterior clean. But the post about it not being SS and confirming that with the magnet trick gave us an idea. If it ain’t SS, treat it so.
We used Palmolive Ultra concentrated dishwashing detergent, with warm water on a soft sponge. The soapier the better. And immediately dried with a 100% soft cotton T shirt rag.
AND IT WORKED!!!!
Good luck!

Bar keepers NEW

I can’t speak for the ice maker because that I am still struggling with but I have all of and I clean it with liquid bar keepers. A lot of people use the powder but I think the liquid works better, in my opinion. I use that and it’s close to new. The stainless steel I don’t think will ever look like brand new but it’s pretty close.

Warm vinegar NEW
by: Anonymous

After struggling for almost 2 years and spending wayyyy too much time on this LG refrigerator, I used warm white vinegar on a soft cloth. You have to get all the residue off first...one of the things I tried is magic eraser, which helped me rub off all the old oil I’d tried. The water drips might be stubborn, but gently persist. Mine finally disappeared. The LG dishwasher was a different story. I’m wondering if at the later date the company was putting a finish of some sort on it. It looked ok for awhile then developed water drip marks that wouldn’t go away. I only managed to shine it with silver polish (Hagerty Silver Foam). I think I’ll probably be able to use warm vinegar on the dishwasher from now on, too.

Good luck. I have used almost every one of these suggestions. The WD worked best...at first...then nothing. Almost more difficult to wipe all that off. Will never have another LG product. Won’t even look at their tv’s now. Just putting in time until I can afford a new refrigerator. Won’t be another LG.

Problem with cleaning my 3 SS kitchen appliances
by: Deb

We bought 3 new LG SS kitchen appliances approximately 4 years ago. The only time they looked good is when they were delivered. I've tried Weisman SS cleaner, WD-40, Windex, vinegar, etc., nothing has worked or worked for a short period of time. For a price tag of $5000 you shouldn't have be frustrated with how to get the things clean! Also, it might be nice if LG told people that their products are not real stainless steal. I'm going to attempt to use a suggestion I saw here with canola oil and see how that works. If anyone has another suggestion on how to make these appliances look good please share.

Problem with cleaning my 3 SS kitchen appliances
by: Deb

We bought all new LG stainless steel kitchen appliances roughly 4 years ago. The only time they looked good was when they were delivered. I have tried Weisman's SS cleaner, WD-40, e-cloth, vinegar, Windex, etc. Nothing works! I would like to put them on a truck and dump them somewhere. I am at my wits end because we spent so much money on these things approximately $5,000. So sorry we bought them never will buy another LG. I now realize that they are not real stainless steal. Going to give canola oil a try. Don't know what else to do.

Bought LG Door-in-Door Fridge and it Died Within 4 Years!! NEW
by: DenizzleRath

I have had to have a LG technician out to my home three times (so far) to fix my LG door-in-door, French door (with the specialty drawer above the freezer) refrigerator. It completely died unexpectedly a couple of months ago. My refrigerator did not defrost during Hurricane Harvey (we were without electricity for three days). But one evening, I went for something out of the freezer and realized everything had totally defrosted. By the morning, the refrigerator was completely dead. We had even pulled the refrigerator out and made sure there was nothing blocking the air flow, unplugged it to do a factory reset, etc.

When you put in for a service call, you find out that the technicians only work M-Th. They offer a service window of 4-8 hours. The very first appointment, I stayed home from work and the tech never even showed up or called. C-R-A-Z-Y.

I would have never believed having spent almost $3K that my refrigerator would have a compressor failure, the entire back side air flow panel replacement and continued issues.

My biggest gripe besides what to do if the appliance continues to have issues is that when the refrigerator defrosted, the ice cube bin melted and totally steaked up the left side of my refrigerator. Before then, I didn't even have as much as a single scratch.

I'm glad to have found this site with tips for hopefully resolving the awful water mark issues. I complained about it to LG and they told me that they were not responsible for "cosmetic" defects with the appliance. I pointed out that it is a cosmetic issue because their appliance failed. Totally to deaf ears. I spend my time now recommending to friends and family to stay away from LG kitchen appliances. I bought the entire "state of the art" kitchen suite when I redid my kitchen. Just hoping then range, microwave oven and dishwasher don't fail on me next.

=)

Use Canola Oil NEW
by: Anonymous

Thank you for the mention to use canola oil. I have a new Samsung fridge and have had the hardest time getting it clean. Stainless cleaner or Pledge work on the majority of the areas except under the water dispenser where all the water spots where located. And where my 1 year olds hand prints would not come off. I was about to order a very expensive product on Amazon until I read this thread. Busted out the can of Pam (canola oil) and it worked perfect.

This Is It !!! For A Gleaming SS Frig !!! NEW
by: ralphiepup

I tried everything and nothing worked. After washing the LG SS door with soap and water and was left with worse than before streaks and smudges, I tried the tiniest bit of Skin So Soft on a paper towel and rubbed in the direction of the grid, it came up beautiful. Love my shiny lg fridge
by: Vicki

I have had my Lg fridge for a few months now and it is just beautiful! At first I panicked after reading reviews and I tried some of the cleaning methods on this page, they were horrible. So I now use... WEIMAN stainless steel wipes.
Clean fridge one section at a time, then buff, in the direction of the grain. And I mean BUFF !!!! You will love the shine. I only clean if it needs it. Fingerprints come right off with a really soft cloth. I love my fridge! If you have cleaned with lots of other stuff, you may have to clean a couple of times.

My 2 cents on cleaning LG Refrigerator Doors
by: Diana

So today I found this thread. I cleaned my door with Clorox Kitchen Cleaner + Bleach (said was good for stainless). Didn’t work. I used Diamond Blur repellant was (also can be used for stainless)....didn’t work. I then sprayed vinegar and the doors were horribly streaked. Worse than ever. So I was reading about Old English and WD40. I had some OrangeGlo Wood Furniture 2-in-2 Clean and polish. I think I. Ought it at the 99 cent store. Anyway, I sprayed it on the refrigerator doors and it has been 20 minutes and no streaks! Crazy! Thank you all for your suggestions. If it streaks, I will update this post.

Not sure about WD40
by: Anonymous

I tried Weiman Stainless Steel cleaner/polish as well as WD40 in an attempt to remove some stains from our LG fridge door. At first, both products seemed to work, but when I buffed the door hard or washed it down with warm soapy water the stains reappeared. I think all the products eveyone is trying don't actually remove the stains - they are simply covered up by an ultra thin layer of polish or oil. The way light reflects off the layer makes the stains disappear. Buffing too much or washing the door removes the layer to reveal the stain! And I tend to agree with some others on this forum - the doors feel like they're made of some kind of plastic that is finished to look like stainless steel. That might explain why they stain so easily.

Relieved to find I am not alone!
by: rar

Purchased this LG stainless steel refrigerator a year ago. It is the worst stainless I have ever had. Nothing works. It may seem ok at first with Wisemans but soon every place I rubbed shows up. Water marks and streaks. If I could afford to junk it and buy a different one I would but will try the WD40 suggested here. Thought I had lost my touch until I found all these other comments with same experience. Will never buy LG again.

Finally, a clean fridge!!!
by: Anonymous

I have been trying to clean my LG stainless steel fridge forever...so I went looking on the web to see if I was alone.

After all, it is terribly frustrating to clean your kitchen only to have cleaning your fridge make the doors worse each time. Every cleaner I tried made it worse.

I stumbled across this site and read all the comments. I tried a number of solutions before the WD40 because I was a bit intimidated to put this on the doors of such an expensive fridge.

The orange glow worked better than anything else but I still had streaks and water marks. So I bit the bullet and tried some WD40 on the side of the door and it was awesome!

I also noted in the comments that others had the same problem with tiny rust dots on the fridge doors and was hoping the WD40 would help with that and it made a little difference.

I researched some more and decided to try a paste of baking soda and water. I put a small amount of paste directly on the rust spots and rubbed with a clean paper towel and the rust disappeared in no time. The paste also helped with the most stubborn of the water drip marks. After completing the paste scrub I wiped the fridge down with clean water, dried and then put a layer of WD 40 on each door, rubbing with the grain and then buffing with a clean rag. Finally a sparkling clean fridge with no smears, streaks or water marks!!

Yeah! I am delighted I found this thread and now know how to keep the fridge clean and sparkly. I hope this helps someone else get the sparking stainless steel they were expecting when they bought their fridge.

2016, $2,398.00 before tax
by: Anonymous

Our 2016 LG cost nearly $2,400.00 and it looks disgraceful in our kitchen. Looks great after using Weimans for 15 minutes and then all the smudges and water stains reappear.
I've had numerous stainless Stella refrigerators in the past and never had a problem - they were Not LG. There are huge marks all over it from trying to clean it. Yes, I've used micro cloths - no help. Paper towers, wash cloths, tried everything.

The ice maker is a joke. It was spitting out ice in the middle of the night while making a roaring sound. The warranty covered that after 3 weeks of pleading and taking movies of it to show to Lowes. Part needed to be ordered.

We have LG washing machine, dryer, oven and frig. It's my last LG purchase. The Kitchen Aid dishwasher stainless steel is so easy to clean, the stainless steel is beautiful.

its not a great fridge
by: Anonymous

i just replaced a very disappointing stainless steel samsung fridge with a new LG which I hate more than the Samsung. The Weiman wipes and spray great worked on the Samsung as we as my LG range & bosch dishwasher - the weiman wipes work great. I can't understand what sort of stainless LG is now using...but like many others commenting...the last time my LG fridge looked good was when the delivery guys pulled that plastic coating off.

Weiman is the best...
by: Chris

We just bought a Stainless Steel Refrigerator from LG and for a day or two I thought I had the same problems… Finally use Weiman Stainless Steel wipes + a microfiber cloth…And voila – the fridge is back to normal.

As far as I am concerned, look at Weiman first for whatever cleaning needs you may have. I already use 3 of their products, and can only say good things!!

stainless steel is not magnetic
by: Anonymous

For those saying the LG stainless steel is not magnetic so its fake you are wrong.
Stainless steel is non magnetic, try to get a magnet to stick on your stainless steel cookware and see for yourself. The fact it is not magnetic means you have real stainless steel not the opposite.
I thought the same at first too until my husband who is a 30 year metal mechanic explained it to me.

LG stainless steel stains
by: Deb in Wisconsin

My new appliances looked like crap no matter what I did or used. I finally came upon this page and decided to try Scotts liquid Gold and I am so happy I heard about it here, it made the world of difference. My smeary stainless steel refrigerator looks so much better, I was hating my new fridge. I wanted the black stainless but they didnt have it in combination for fridge and stove, a fridge I liked but a stove model I didnt want and vice versa, so I ended up with stainless which I did not want. This has helped me like it a little more, thank you.

LG doors are horrible to clean
by: Frustrated in va

Don't try LG's suggestion to use baking soda in warm water.HORRIBLE MISTAKE. It made a huge mess of streaks that won't come off. I will never by another LG. It isn't even real stainless steel.

I'm still a fan of the pure mineral oil method (it's the second main ingredient of WD-40). No disgusting smell, and since my kids touch the fridge constantly, I would rather a food-grade product (mineral oil) residue on their hands instead of one not meant for human consumption (WD-40). My follow-up is "Hope's Perfect Stainless" spray, and streaks and smudges are wiping out much much easier. PLUS, I ordered a great product from Amazon that is really helping with my LG-cleaning woes: Refrigerator HANDLE COVERS! The brand name is "Ougar8" and we got the gray plush ones for $11.99. They are soft and well made, with satiny trim, and look great with stainless. They're more than a foot long, and close with Velcro. (If you do purchase, place the velcro seams sides on the area in between the handles, not on the outside of the handle, so that when you fingers wrap around you don't hit the seam). Machine washable (haven't washed mine yet), and I no longer have to wipe down messy door handles a couple of times a week. Love them!!

WD40 is the best
by: Happy Now

After reading all the comments here, I tried the WD40. Sprayed it on a paper towel and followed the grain. Refrig looks great. Best it has looked since I bought it. WD40 has many uses; but never thought of it for stainless steel, or should I say LG's variety of stainless steel

Note have a Samsung stainless range and is easy to clean. The stainless always looks good.

Miracle?
by: Anonymous

I came across this thread after panicking about ten minutes after delivery of my lg fridge when I couldn't get the sticker stain off. I used the liquid gold furniture polish- smudges everywhere. I followed with vinegar water and it was beautiful. I tried only vinegar water on the other door and the other sticker stain didn't come off. I cleaned the rest with the two step (polish then vinegar) process successfully. All of the work gave me plenty of time to think how the employees at the showroom presumably had to sleep at night and thus must have a better solution. The store told me that they use Easy-off Professional Stainless Steel Cleaner. I have it on order. Good luck all!

Why you can't clean a LG stainless steel refrigerator!
by: Anonymous

Put a refrigerator magnet on the sides of your LG stainless steel refrigerator. It sticks. Then put it on the front of the doors. It doesn't stick and falls to the floor. (At least that's what happens on my 2016 LG s/s refrigerator). That's because the doors ARE NOT stainless steel, therefore the stainless steel cleaners will not work on them! It seems more like a plastic, but definitely not metal.

I too, am terribly frustrated by the fingerprints on my 4-month old LG refrigerator and have purchased a bunch of cleaners trying to remedy the problem. I have always had white appliances just for that reason, but I gave in & bought a new stainless steel one because it was several hundred dollars more for a white one, and the s/s was on sale. Now I know why the white ones cost mote!

LG fridge nightmare to clean
by: Midge

This fridge is 3 months old and barely used as we've been having a new kitchen installed. My husband first cleaned it and I thought he did a bad job but I've tried cleaning it several times and it streaks, spots etc. it wasn't cheap and has the extra front door for things used often. I hate it. LG what's the deal? Do you see how many people on this thread are having the same issue????

My favorite is Weiman
by: Chester McDaniels

I've found Weiman's cleaner works best for cleaning my fridge and for preventing it from getting dirty again.

I have a couple kids who love putting their dirty hands on everything. But this stuff really helps keep the stainless clean.

Finally found something that works!
by: Anonymous

I have tried several methods (baking soda, vinegar, stainless steel wipes, bar keepers friendly etc) and finally found a method I'm 100% happy with. I have a 20 fl. oz spray bottle. I wrote the 'recipe' on the bottle with a sharpie so I will never forget... put 1/4 cup DISTILLED water and fill the rest with white vinegar. The important piece to this is ONLY using a stainless steel microfiber cloth. I spray onto the rag then wipe down. I now use this on my ss fridge, oven trim, dishwasher, stovetop and hood.

I wash all my microfiber towels with an earth friendly liquid detergent (no bleach) in cold water. DO NOT use any fabric softeners in your wash OR when you dry them. Throw them into the dryer on low heat/delicate or air dry. These microfiber cloths will last you years if taken care of properly. They are excellent for mirrors and glass and bathroom fixtures. You can find these cloths at your local grocery store, Home goods, Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, etc...

by: Deborah M.

My mom has an LG too and was having the same thing. After trying all kinds of cleaners. She used warm tap water and 3 or 4 papertowels. She wipes with the grain. She keeps her ceiling fan on. When it dries it is perfect. After spending money on cleaners......well she is thrilled. Try it.

LG STAINLESS IS THE WORSE
by: L. Thompson

Three years ago we made a big mistake in buying LG appliances. The stainless steel is very poor quality the shelves of my fridge started cracking only after a few months in use.My friend bought European made appliances and they are so much better in all aspects. They were more expensive but worth every penny. I cannot wait to change my appliances to European made in the new year.

Steel Meister Wonderful
by: Anonymous

I to could not clean my LG stainless steel refrigerator until I saw this site and saw that Steel Meister was recommended. I bought it and it works wonders. I didn't spray it on the refrigerator, I sprayed it on my micro-fiber towel first and rubbed it in a circular motion. I than buffed it out with a clean micro-fiber towel. My fridge is back to being beautiful. It removed all spots, water drips and did not leave an oily residue.

Hi, for the person who just said they put Steel Meister on their LG refrigerator, could you post back in a couple of months and let us know how its working. I've been using the WD40 for a couple of years now and would still like to try a product that you don't have to strip down every couple of months. LG are you LISTENING!!!

STEEL MEISTER WORKS GREAT!
by: Anonymous

I too have tried just about everything I could think of to clean and shine my LG stainless steel exterior! I finally found something that works great and is very easy to use. It's called Steel Meister. It comes in a grey aerosol can with a blue top and I purchased it at Home Depot in the Appliance Department...not the Dept. that sells Cleaning Products. My frig looks new again after only one application which was a week ago. Once I wiped Steel Meister on with a soft cloth, I let it dry for 20 minutes, wiped off the excess with a paper towel and then lightly buffed it with a soft cloth. I am once again a happy owner of my LG frig that's clean and shiny!

Mineral oil
by: Anonymous

Just wanted to chime back in that plain mineral oil has worked like a charm and streaks are now buffing out easily. IT HAS NO SMELL and is food-grade product so I'd really recommend trying it before noxious WD- 40. I put on a very thick initial coat... Couldn't believe how the fridge just soaked up. Didn't leave any oily residue; the fridge looks and feels glossy smooth and new. So far streaks are manageable but I imagine I will have to apply soap /vinegar and then repeat the process at some point.

WD40
by: Anonymous

I have been using the WD40 for 2 years now. I have found after the 3rd time of putting the WD40 ON that I have to take it all off and start fresh or it does start streaking with build up. I use dawn (green or blue) to take off the build up. It is a pain but at least I know I can use the WD40 3 more times before taking it off again. So more or less every 4 months I deoil it. I can't understand in this day and time that a cleaner has not been made to remedy this situation!!

So frustrated with the LG Stainless Steel!
by: Shae

We have many guests who always stick their glass in front of the ice pad and press the water pad with their finger thinking water comes out this way. Water goes EVERYWHERE. Take that along with the smudges and water stains and I want to scream. The Wieman wipes seemed to work well for quite sometime as I would buff it out with White flour sack towels. Now, it makes the smudging worse. I've tried a mixture of water, vinegar as well as rubbing alcohol and water. Everything is leaving it with streaks. I'm going to try the WD 40 next and keep a microfiber towel under the sink. LG should NOT be making these. They are expensive and should be something that shines in your kitchen. It most definitely shouldn't be an eye sore with all the streaks etc.. I love my LG washer and dryer but I can't say the same for this fridge. I most definitely would NOT buy this fridge again and would warn others.

Disappointed
by: Anonymous

This is our second stainless LG, and we're so disappointed it's much harder to clean than the older one! The stainless steel cleaner and wipes that worked like a charm with the old one don't work, and every cleaner we've tried leaves dull streaks and splotches everywhere. Dish soap and then mineral oil has improved things, but it took so much effort to buff it everywhere for an even look. I'll try the pledge spray on furniture polish method next or spray cooking oil as I just tipped over my bottle of mineral oil and made a mess on my granite and shirt. Not a happy housekeeper today...:/ We're also disappointed with the mysterious defrosting of our freezer contents that has happened twice in just 3 months since we got the new fridge when the freezer was just a bit too full. Shouldn't you be able to use all your freezer space without worrying about blocking vents? This LG will prob be our last. *scurries back to buffing fridge*

Found something that worked on my LG Fridge!
by: Anonymous

First off kids and stainless steel appliances are not a good combination! That being said I started cleaning my fridge with pledge multi surface cleaner...worked ok for maybe a month then it stopped working. We were having a big party at our house and I wanted my fridge spotless so I turned to Pinterest and went with the vinegar olive oil combo...well that took about 30 minutes to get all that oil rubbed off....but it did look pretty good. Now about 2 weeks later nothing seems to be working and I have weird splotches on the fridge. I tried Brasso and that made even more splotches. So I found this thread of comments. I decided to use the good old dawn soap on a wet sponge before I went to the WD40 and I am happy to say the dawn worked. I did have to use 2 dry rags to make sure there were no streaks but it was rather simple and took minimal effort!

Cleaning Stainless
by: Sharon

I was SO disillusioned with trying to get my stainless clean. The Windex left spots and run marks and stainless polish (spray) wasn't cutting it. I used WD40 and it worked like a charm!!! So glad I found this site! :) Happy Camper here!

by: Anonymous

1. Ignore finger prints
2. a. Wash with Dawn, distilled water and microfiber towel to reduce streaking and uneven patina.
2. bsprite. Treat with a synthetic automotive paint protectant when still new and clean.

LG Fridge looks horrible
by: Anonymous

My 2 year old Lg fridge looks horrible. It is covered in water drips and smudges. I too have tried everything. I really don't want to inhale the smells given off from the WD or any other strong chemical. LG's help line was pathetic, the woman didn't listen to anything I said, and went off and talked about an LG visit for a gasket issue 6 months ago??? Spent well over $3000, and this is what you get in return. My GE oven and Bosch dishwasher look great, the fridge is awful, I wish I could hide it in the basement and use it for drinks.

Found a cleaner that actually works that isnt oily or toxic!
by: Anonymous

I have had all the same problems as people on here and have struggled to find something that works but I have!! I used every product I can find but it always started streaking again. Today while cleaning my fruit with Natural veggie wash I notice it said "safe removal of waxes, chemicals and soil" and I thought whT the hell, I have tried everything else so I sprayed it on my fridge. I used a dry towel to rub it in and you could feel it removing the wax residue. Then I used another clean wet cloth to rince off the veggie wash and then a dry towel to buff it dry. I am AMAZED! My fridge has never been this clean and shiny. Every streak and spot of dirt came off. I am happy that I found something that is food safe to use! I would bet all veggie cleaners would work. I hope this works for other people who have been struggling like me. I bought the veggie spray at tj maxx for 3.99.

WD40

We tried both WD40 and Liquid Gold. Both worked to remove streaks.. we recommend both with a preference for WD 40.
What surprised us was the merchant where we purchased the LG fridge had no experience on these remedies.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Best product I've found!!
by: Anonymous

Almost returned my stainless steel appliances. The more I used products meant to clean stainless steel, the worse the streaking. WD 40 works great, but the smell was terrible. Shopzilla by Topduck is a god send!! Plant based and no smell!! Clean stuck on food particles first with winded or soap and water. Spray on shopzilla on wipe with a dry cloth. The results are amazing. Everyone I have turned on to this product to clean their stainless steel are turning on their friends.

Fridge Hygiene
by: Anonymous

I agree with almost everyone on the WD 40 it works great. However the fingerprint marks are a clear reminder how dirty hands are. It is frustrating but it reminds me to clean it with anti bac Windex. Im just saying even with the WD 40 the handles and the front need to be cleaned. For this I recommend Windex first then follow up with WD. Jr.

Liquid Gold
by: Gloria M

I have tried everything and I mean everything, I.e. WD 40, mild soap and water, vinegar solution followed by olive oil (which worked pretty well, but a pain and takes longer), Windex (as recommended by Martha Stewart), and Weiman Stainless Steel cleaner. Finally saw one comment using Liquid Gold furniture polish. Read the label and sure enough it said you could used it on stainless steel. Tried it first on an inconspicuous spot; seemed to work, so, tried it on my whole refrigerator. It works! And much easier than everything else! Highly recommend giving it a try!

SS refrig
by: jana

I had a 10 year old stainless steel fridge that looked brand new. I could clean it with about anything and it looked great. Water, all surface cleaner, stainless steel cleaner. It was wipe and go. Now the new LG even at best takes extra long to clean. I have tried several cleaners that say they are for stainless steel and it gets streakier with each cleaning. I'm going to try the WD 40. It seems like you shouldn't have to bring an industrial type spray into a kitchen just to clean. What are they thinking? My fridge was $3000. I had no idea that cleaning would be such an issue.

update on usage of WD40
by: Jr

my previous post on March 2016 detailed my usage of WD40 on my LG refrigerator. After a 3 month period, here is my feedback.

I have NOT had a problem with the nasty fingerprints (or water splashes) any longer. After using the WD40 the initial first time to wipe down my refrig, the prints and smudges come off effortlessly with just using a microfiber cloth.

There appears to have been no harm done by wiping the WD40 on the surface of my refrig, for that I am elated!

Yes I agree that it is unscrupulous of LG to sell these expensive refrigerators with the terrible exterior issue. They have to be aware of it, I am sure. Resolution would be the RIGHT thing to do.

WD40 worked when nothing else did!
by: Jr

Rest assured if you have gone crazy looking at those awful fingerprints on your brand new LG refrigerator that the WD40 really does work! My fridge is only a few months old and sure i was scared to do it but the mild soapy water did not work in the least bit! Here is how i did it: i sprayed the WD40 on a microfiber cloth (not too much just a little) then i wiped over the prints as well as the outlying area then wiped over again with the clean side of the microfiber cloth. You sort of have to wipe the entire area for it to look uniform. I donʻt know how ling it will last but for now it sure looks good!

Who knew this was such a simple fix?!
by: Rossmom

OMG....I absolutely love my LG products. Purchased the fridge first over 2 years ago and then proceeded to buy range and microwave...all in the dreaded stainless steel. Soon after purchasing the fridge, some water dripped down the front of the bottom freezer drawer leaving two stains I could not get rid of, even after purchasing the recommended (by Lowe's) stainless cleaner which did nothing to solve the problem. If it wasn't for their high reviews, I was almost hesitant about purchasing the other kitchen appliances. Anyway, I googled the problem today and came across this site where many recommended WD 40. I had a can on hand and decided to test a small spot on the side of the fridge. VOILA!!!! It's a miracle..lol!!! Went on to do all the appliances and now they look brand new. Even the water stains are gone. A big "thank you" to the brilliant people on here that recommended it!!

Just thought I would try the Internet this am to see if I could find help with cleaning my stainless steel fridge. I thought it was hopeless but then saw these comments about using WD40. I went into the garage and fortunately we had a little bit left so I tried it on a corner of the fridge and oh my goodness, it worked like a charm!! LG Stainless Refrigerator

We've had our SS LG for about 3 years now. I did not have a problem keeping it look nice until recently. I have places on it that are real shiny while the rest looks like normal SS should look. I have tried a lot of products. We also have an LG range and dishwasher. They seem to clean up just fine. Can't figure out why the fridge is such a pain. I am going to try the WD40 as I have read more good reports on this.

The front of the LG fridge is stainless steel not aluminum. The sides are steel that is why the magnet sticks to the side. Most S/S is not magnetic so a magnet will not stick to the front. Also I agree WD40 works great.

LG SS FRUSTRATION!!
by: Anonymous

I too have been trying everything to clean my LG SS refrigerator doors with no luck. My new kitchen is gorgeous EXCEPT for the refrigerator doors that look like I have never taken a cleaning cloth to them. I tried the WD40 just now and I am so thankful for this post! It worked better than anything else I have tried.
Does anyone else have little tiny RUST marks starting to show all over the doors? This is ridiculous on a refrigerator that I have had for only 3 months. I am just wondering about the quality of the SS used by LG?? I love the rest of the refrigerator but these doors are a nightmare!!!

WD 40!!!!!
by: Anonymous

I have been using lemon pledge since I got my LG refridgerator a year ago. It works fantastic, but my granddaughters finger prints were on the fridge this weekend and whatever she had on her hands the pledge wouldn't touch it. Many comments about vinegar so I tried that, it just made the problem worse. So I tried the WD 40 (a little afraid to try it) and it worked great. Finger prints all gone along with the mess I made with the vinegar. I will continue to use the yellow can of pledge though because it cut down on finger prints to almost none. Even with my grandkids at our house 4 times a week.

I just purchased an LG Jan. 2014, and the directions say to use mild soapy water and rinse and wipe dry. this worked perfectly, no streaks or marks. I used a few drops of Palmolive in a bowl of warm water and used a soft sponge. Then I wiped down with clean water and a cheap shammy and then dried with a soft cotton dish towel.
Try it as I'm sure other products will leave a film and fingerprints will follow.

LG stainless fridgea cleaning nightmare
by: Anonymous

I too bought my LG fridge in 2009. Nothing seems to work. as soon as I think it has a streak-free shine: I turn around and see nothing but streaks. None of my other stainless (Kenmore) appliances are like this LG nightmare. It must be something with their finish. Very frustrating. Have tried most of the suggestions.

OMG!
by: Jude's

Tried everything on my LG fridge - nothing but streaks. Read all your comments and tried WD40 and OMG it works.

I sprayed the WD40 on a blue microfibre cloth and wiped dry with a yellow microfibre cloth and Voila! No Streaks.

Then I put them both in a ziplock bag and marked the bag and I am ready today for another day!

Thanks for all the great suggestions - but on an LG SS fridge - and my Kitchen Aid SS appliances WD40 is the best!!!!

LG Stainless Steel Refrigerator
by: D Davis

HELP I can not get my LG refrigerator doors to shine. I just bought it in 2012 if I had not paid so much for it I would get rid of it. I never should have bought stainless steel, kicking my self for doing so. Can someone tell me how to clean the out side doors I have tried every thing that I know of.

PLEDGE
by: Anonymous

I found pledge (and a paper towel)to work best on my LG refrigerator, a microfiber cloth (slightly damp with water) to work best on my LG microwave and GE dishwasher. It seems like all of the stainless steels are different..

WOW! Stainless Steel Cleaner
by: Anonymous

Found WOW! cleaner at Ace Hardware. WD40 certainly works, but WOW is much better. Beautiful liquid shine, clean smell, not a solvent.

Earth-friendly, 100% biodegradable organic ingredients, non-flammable, no petroleum distillates.

Stainless steel appliances

Just tried WD40 on an LG refrigerator, GE microwave and Bosch dishwasher.

They haven't shined so much since they arrived!

Put just a small amount on a soft cloth, applied WD40, then wiped down with a soft dry cloth.

Give it a try!

LG Stainless Steel Nightmare

Wouldn't you think that LG would be interested in offering a solution with so many people complaining. Seems like it would be in their best interest.

My LG Stainless Steel Refrigerator is a Cleaning Nightmare!
by: Oakley

Just like LaRue B, I too purchased an LG stainless steel refrigerator in July of 2009.

I take care of my home and nothing gets abused, but...I can not get the outside of my refrigerator clean. I think I have tried everything!

I defy anyone to come up with a solution that I have not tried.

I hate this refrigerator and will never purchase a stainless steel refrigerator again! I am so frustrated and disappointed.

Best Kept Secrect for Cleaning Stainless Steel!!
by: Anonymous

I don't know if you found a remedy but I clean houses and can offer you the best kept secret when it comes to cleaning stainless steel appliances:

WD-40!

Put it directly on the product or on a soft cloth such as a diaper or microfiber cloth once applied just rub in one direction and buff with the clean side of the rag.

Its the best trick I have learned. Stainless can be tricky!

Possible Solution
by: Anonymous

I have an LG stainless steel refrigerator, and I picked up some "stainless steel wipes" at the local store. I know we have wipes for everything, but these are wonderful. I have had the package for about 2 months and have at least have the container left.

One thing I am wondering about is the filter light. I have had this fridge for almost a year, and the indicator light says the filter is 100% still good. I know when we bought this the sales guy said that refrigerator water filters should be replaced every 6 months. I'm just wondering if I should go ahead and change it.

Can't Clean My LG Stainless Steel Refrigerator!!!
by: Mrs. Carrero

I have that same problem. I left the clear plastic coat on the doors and freezer drawer but my Mom took the plastic coat off one door.

Immediately the fingerprints started (children) and as soon as I tried to wipe them off, it looks horrible!

LG should have a press release explaining how to clean their darn S/S doors. I gave up!

I think I might be able to help
by: Julianna

Bless your heart!! I can completely relate!! When I first tried to clean my stainless steel refrigerator I was SHOCKED at how awful it looked. Then I started looking around at a few different ways to clean it.

I tried soap and water (believe it or not it works the best) but you have to wipe it down and dry it otherwise it looks all streaky. That's really the biggest secret - wiping it clean and dry.

Don't even try to clean it with Windex. For me it was an exercise in frustration.

I also found some really interesting info on stainless steel refrigerators (cleaning, etc.) on the stainless steel page on this site. Click here to read it
