HELP -- My Frigidaire Fridge is Making a Loud Popping Noise

by Tom H.
(BC, Canada)

Four or five time a day we hear a fairly loud popping sound from our Frigidaire side by side fridge. I have checked to see if I could see anything which may cause this but found nothing.

Please let me know what might be causing this. I want to know if I have a major problem or if it is just expansion or some thing to do with the ice maker.

Service Flash technical bulletin NEW
by: Lighning

We put the Frigidaire Gallery refrig in our new house and were grealy disappointed by the LOUD noises it makes. After much searching, we found a bulletin for service technicians, titled Electrolux Service Flash Evaporator Feed Noise RF0901. This is also for Frigidaire and states it below the title. The problem is to get them to authorize the service or you have to pay. We haven't had the service done yet, but at least it shows there is something that will solve the problem. It may also be a DIY for some.

Loud Popping Noise NEW
by: R. Davis

All popping comments on here are correct. Ours started making the LOUD noise a couple weeks after arrival and has got louder over time. No help from seller. A Fn rip off if you ask me. Lowes should be ashamed for selling this crap.

Mine too
by: Clay Johnson

Loud BANG about a half dozen times a day. Loud enough to startle in another room.

Called Frigidaire CS who told me they'd send a tech but if they didn't find a problem we'd be billed ~$175 for the visit. That's about 30% of what we paid for the fridge at Lowes. We decided to just get used to it and buy a Bosch next time.

My fridge is 30 years old & still running great. NEW
by: Lisa

I purchased a General Electric refrigerator 30 years ago. The least expensive one I could find as I was broke. It cost me $400. I’m knocking on wood, but it is still running problem free for 31 years now. I even had mice living in it one cold winter, they started pushing the insulation out, little rats.
I will never buy a big over priced refrigerator, I have yet to hear a single person who has luck having any type of duration owning one. Although my fridge is smaller, you could purchase 2 of them and still pay much less than these big boys with costly computer modules that fail.
Last time I checked, the prices on the least expensive fridges are still around the $450 range. One may not be big enough for a large family, but they are big enough for a small family. And especially a couple or single.

Just Horrible NEW
by: bronxboy

The Frigidaire refrigerator came with my new house. It cost about $2000. Not only do you have to buy expensive water filters every 6 months, it makes very loud popping noises regularly. It even happens when the ice maker is off. What a horrible appliance! The noise makes it difficult to eat in the dining area or watch TV. The site says this is perfectly normal. Really? I didn't know this refrigerator came with free fireworks.

Total Piece of Crap NEW
by: dbrakeman

We bought the (un)Professional series built just before the pandemic. It pops, grinds, sprays water all over out of the icemaker, freezes food in the crisper, ALL the shelves have broken, the second icemaker cascades ice everwhere! OK worse yet is the matching dishwasher. The tub broke after 2 1/2 years....I30 codes, etc.
Do yourself a favor. Package up every appliance and go find new ones. NEVER by FRIGIDAIRE or ELECTROLUX again.

Loud knock from my unit, Frigidaire insist nothing's wrong
by: Anonymous

My 2021 Frigidaire French door has a sound problem too. It will make an unnerving knock sound once every few hours, sometimes waking me up at night with my bedroom door closed. The unit has a built in ice-maker, but I have never turned it on. 3 different techs came to check on it, but the fridge didn't make that sound when they were here. Frigidaire is saying from now on, they will charge me for any service requests concerning the knocking sound, even though it's still under warranty. Reason being the last tech who came reported there no technical issues affecting normal functioning of the fridge. Not sure what I should do next, any advice?

Popping every two seconds - try this! NEW

Listen to the "stick ice" comments! There was the tiniest piece of ice lodged where it should have been coming out, had I been using the ice maker. Took a soft spatula, popped that baby out and the sound was instantly gone!

Mark’s wife helped us also NEW
by: Russ

Up all night with the loud popping noise. When we opened the lower freezer door it stops. Close the freezer door and it starts all over again. Found Mark’s post this morning. Per his discussion, like his wife, we looked at the lower ice maker and there was an ice cube stuck to the top fins. Knocked the cube off, closed the freezer door and the noise stopped. I’m going to start the ice marker again and keep an eye on the fins. Thank you Mark’s wife!

To Electrolux won't fix the this issue for me NEW
by: Anonymous

Escalate the issue. Ask to speak to a supervisor. Maybe it's so noisy that it is disrupting your sleep or other activities going on in your home. Maybe it's so noisy that you are afraid it's going to catch fire and burn your house down. Don't give up. Maybe the Better Business Bureau can help.

Electrolux won't fix the this issue for me NEW
by: Anonymous

My fridge has also been making the popping noise, and I'm within the warranty so I thought I would give them a call to get it fixed. Electrolux refuses to fix the problem because it's 'just a noise' and the fridge is still working properly otherwise. I have to wait until it doesn't work well (which we all know it's not going to happen within the warranty) to have any kind of service on it.

Nitrogen Fix NEW
by: Anonymous

Frigidaire would not perform the nitrogen fix during the warranty period, even though is was supposedly a factory-created procedure. I tried 3 times to get it done, with excuse after excuse why they couldn't do it. They did try another fix that involved wrapping the compressor pipes with insulation, which accomplished virtually nothing. My unit is only 3 years old and I have ended up replacing both freezer sliding bin runners due to failure of the catch, one vegetable bin due to failure of the rollers, now the finish is wearing off the handles. I will never purchase a Frigidaire product again due to both the quality and service issues I have experienced. My last Kenmore fridge ran for over 18 years without even one issue.

by: Anonymous

Ha...Wish I would of been diligent and found this thread before my warranty ran out.We bought our Frigidaire fridge new in 2017 and from day one it had this same intermittent popping noise.BTW,We never had the ice-maker installed.
We've always joked that there is a little miner inside breaking up rocks, because it sounds like rocks falling down a chute...But,Now the joke is on us because our warranty ran out and the fix appears to be the nitrogen treatment...Question: has anyone out there paid for this service out-of-pocket,and what was the cost? Thanks and good luck, everyone!

Refrigerator noise NEW
by: Seth r t

First off you need to unplug your fridge completely long enough for it to dethaw and clean it completely out the freezer and the refrigerator everything you can physically see needs to be cleaned first after it's dethol completely usually takes one entire day or two so you need to find somewhere to put all your food and shit before you do this obviously unplug it from the wall and check anything you can see. Physically cleaning it as much as you possibly can after it dissolves will help some problems believe it or not just try that first it's the easiest most simple fix if it's still causing you problems after that take it to a repair shop usually if it's not a big deal they won't cost very much and cheaper than buying doing

Expansion and contraction NEW
by: Anonymous

My Frigidaire refrigerator made loud popping noises long before I connected the water line to the plumbing so I know that the noises were not due to the ice maker auger. As the compressor cycles on and the temperature lowers, the body of the refrigerator contracts. When the compressor cycles off and the temperature rises, the body of the refrigerator expands. This is the same effect that is seen when a water bottle is taken out of a refrigerator. This expansion and contraction causes a loud popping noise that sounds like a drummer striking the inside of the refrigerator with a drumstick at full force. These popping noises are annoying, but mechanically there is nothing wrong with the refrigerator.

My Frigidaire gallery was making knocking every 2 seconds. I tried all the trouble shooting I found, then I saw a post from a man that said his wife found ice on lower ice maker and knocked it off and it fixed theirs. I’ve had this ice problem before and I don’t remember it making noise, but that solved my problem. Thank you!

Frigidaire popping sound fixed NEW
by: Mark

We have a Frigidaire Professional side by side fridge (professional is a marketing term at best). Every so often we hear this popping sound but it goes away when new ice is made in the lower, freezer ice maker. However, the past few days it starting popping and remained popping. Talk about driving a person nuts!

Solution: My wife, the genius she is, figured it out! In the lower (freezer) ice maker there was a small piece of ice frozen/stuck to the top area where the ice comes out. She got a plastic spatula and tapped on the small ice to loosen it. Immediately the popping sound stopped. It's like there is a rotating part and that ice prevented it from rotating (guessing here). Once the ice was gone, it was able to return to normal operation. I thanked her a dozen times yesterday, saved us our sanity and a bunch of money. Hopefully this helps someone out.

HELP -- My Frigidaire Fridge is Also Making a Loud Popping Noise NEW
by: Susan

My new Frigidaire makes loud popping noises as well. For the longest time (and because I was having rodent problems in my pipes), I thought it was a rodent in my pipes. My icemaker has been turned off for months, so I know it is not that. I unplugged my refrigerator for a couple of days, and no noise. Replugged and the popping starts up again, though quite randomly. It is quite loud, though and is unnerving at night. Did you get an answer to your inquiry about the same?

Noisy Fridge, Frigidaire Gallery
by: Anonymous

My Frigidaire Gallery is THREE MONTHS old, french doors with bottom freezer. I'm working on the third service call. First call was to fix freezer draw gasket. Second service call was to try to fix fan. It slide off and hit condenser when running, what a horrible noise. It's now seven days later and same problem AGAIN. Customer Service from Electrolux SUCKS. It takes two weeks to get a service guy to come! I also have the LOUD POPPING / snapping sound times per day!! Is there a recall on this problem? It should be replaced, the complete fridge. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER FRIGIDAIRE REFRIGERATOR. Mike

Seems that different manufacturers are using the same Chinese components, causing this same popping problem to be present in different brands.
I consider it to be a problem, even though the manufacturer will tell you that it is "normal".
I persisted multiple times throughout my extended warranty period and not only was told on multiple visits that it was "normal", but when I contacted the manufacturer higher-ups about the problem, they also said it was "normal" I also tried pursuing a "fix" that the manufacturer recommended during the warranty period, but was told that the warranty only covers malfunctions that "result in the unit becoming inoperative or unusable".

Not only has the popping issue still unresolved under my extended warranty, but during the second year I not only had a failure with the freezer bin rail slider, but now a broken roller on one of the bins in the fridge section, both I find out are not covered by the extended warranty.
I will never buy anything with the Frigidaire name on it again.

Ridiculous popping/hammering noise NEW
by: PSA in NC

Just like all others in this thread, I can also testify to this most ridiculously loud hammering/popping noise from the Frigidaire side by side. Clearly this is a defect in this fridge. I've come into contact with 100s of fridges in my lifetime and never have heard one knock consistently like this one. Mine was here when I bought the house and I've lived with it for over a year, but it's ultra annoying. Think of someone hitting the side of the fridge with a hammer. That's the level of"popping" mine makes. Although the nitrogen fix mentioned in this thread could work, I'm certain the cost of having this done out of warranty wouldn't be worth the repair. So, unfortunately, this one will likely make it's way to the dump and replaced by a better quality one. Unbelievable that an appliance costing nearly $3000 only has a one year warranty while you can buy a $400 Vitamix blender and get a 7 year warranty. Good luck folks!

Loud popping Frigidaire refrigerator NEW
by: Anonymous

We bought a Frigidaire gallery refrigerator December 2019. The fridge pops and clicks day and night. I wish we had not bought this brand. It can be scary if you hear this in the middle of the night or if you're home alone, especially if you don't know about this ridiculousness. Sometimes it's so loud it sounds like a gunshot. It's nerve racking. We've had guess that jump after hear this noise. The manufacturer had to know about this, but did nothing to correct the problem. Never again!!

Pop, Crackle and Snap! NEW
by: Dave J

Bought Frigidaire side by side bottom freezer from Lowe's last year. Delivered first week in Dec. 2019. Discovered the bottom drawer didn't look level plus when it slides out there's a snap/pop sound. Called for service, repair guy came in a couple weeks and he saw exactly what I described. He said you just got a poorly constructed fridge. The sliding drawer wasn't fixed and we're still stuck with a snapping drawer. Now for a few months we've heard a loud pop sound at random. If you're standing next to the fridge when it happens, you kinda jump! Our plan is to call for service again at Frigidaire. At least we still have a few more months before the warranty is up. Glad I found this site to read the stories of the popping sound and to know that we're not alone. Sure is disappointing!

This is the company that performed the procedure on my Frigidaire: (Solid State Service, Phone number 405-384-4541). Give them a call. They should be able to give you a ball-park figure of what they would charge to perform the nitrogen fix procedure on your Frigidaire. One other note, my Frigidaire had the popping noise issue from day 1. Your Frigidaire is several years old. If you do decide to call Solid State, you may want to mention that bit of information (that your Frigidaire is several years old). Maybe your Frigidaire just needs servicing, a part replaced, etc.
I hope you let everyone on this site know how your problem was resolved.

Yet another example NEW
by: Will

Same problem, Frigidaire 26 cu-ft side-by-side, manufactured in Mexico in 12/13 (assuming that's Dec 2013). It's in a house I'm renting, and after several years of basically quiet, std small hum during operation you'd get from any fridge, barely noticeable. A couple weeks back it just started with this popping noise, shortly after a compressor cycle kicks in, lasts 5-30 seconds (usually about 10), and sounds like it's coming from inside the refrig side out of the plastic housing/tiny vent thing that runs along the top-left of the fridge compartment (I'm assuming this circulates air from the freezer side?). Anyway, sounds like this Tech Bulletin, nitrogen fix is the only real long term solution. I'm wondering what this procedure would cost out of pocket. I'm not screwing around with Frigidaire for months, if it's less than a used fridge would cost, I'll just call around techs and find someone who'll do the procedure. Are we talking $300, $500? Ballpark?

The loud pop appeared after approx 4 weeks of use, up to that point is was not making it. Does not seem to be the defrost noise as it will happen repeatedly once compressor switches off/on. Have not called about it yet but obviously found this site so at least not crazy. It is the same noise my 20yo Amana was making in it final 1-2 years before the compressor failed. It is very loud. At least I bought a 5 year warranty and bought from local company with own service dept. I never buy extended warranties but you there are nightmare story after story across all brand of friges these days, not just frigidaire. Will be contacting the service dept soon and see what they say about RF0901 (Electrolux Service Flash) which seems to have been removed from online access.

Hey Really Pissed NEW
by: Paul

It is really disappointing to hear that a Service tech told you that adding nitrogen would ruin the compressor and he "was not allowed to do it".
That is why I have tried to encourage people to ask for another opinion and not give up.
Look through this thread. You can see that people are having RF0901 done (very recently) on their Frigidaire while under warranty.

Hey Really Pissed NEW
by: Paul

I read your concerns. RF0901 (Electrolux Service Flash) was generated by Electrolux. They are the parent company of Frigidaire. They (Electrolux) identified the popping problem and generated RF0901 as a solution. I actually had the Service Flash accomplished on my Frigidaire. It has been 2 years and no problems.
I had the same concerns as you before I had RF0901 done to my Frigidaire (that it may damage the compressor, the compressor would run more, the refrigerator would not cool as well, etc.) The only difference with my refrigerator before nitrogen was added and after nitrogen was added: there is no popping noise.
I went ahead and took the risk rather than live with the constant popping distraction.

Nitrogen fix NEW
by: Really Pissed

One Frigidaire warranty repair guy told me that adding nitrogen would ruin the compressor and he "was not allowed to do it".
Of course now the unit is out of warranty, so I would have to pay for the fix. I may just go for a new fridge soon. I have had two freezer door slide tracks replaced over 3 years, as the door return mechanism fails and begins making loud noises when the door is opened.
My last American made refrigerator that I bought in 1974 lasted 40 years without a problem.

If after reading all of these threads, you are convinced that adding nitrogen will solve the problem and your Frigidaire is out of Warranty maybe you could find out what a Service Company would charge you to perform the procedure. Hey Dave, I have the exact frigidaire model (# fftr1821t)

what do you mean by "sweeping the main temperature control back and forth"?

frigidaire popping noise FFTR1821T

I have a small Freezer on top frigidaire (model# fftr1821t) After the thing starts to run it made crazy popping sounds for a few seconds. same popping noise as others. NEW
by: RC from Vancouver, BC

I have the same issue as others. Top freezer model purchased in Nov. 2019 (no ice maker). Makes loud popping noises 20-30 seconds after compressor kicks in. The noise is coming from the evaporator.

Called Frigidaire to explain situation and referenced RF0901 service flash. When I offer the service flash # they don't want it. They say the noise is "normal" and the service flash is not from their website so it's not an official/valid service flash.

They gave me phone numbers to services companies in my area, but if the tech finds no "functional" issues with the unit I'm on the hook for the service call.

Called service companies. They will only come out for a warranty repair if Frigidaire makes the call out. If I make the call, I would have to pay and then submit a warranty claim, which from the sounds of it Frigidaire will not pay.

Seems like a design issue that has been going on for over 10 years (the service flash is dated Feb. 2009) so you would think they've come up with better product by now.

Don't know if it will work in your case, but for me I had to keep calling and pushing. Request a different repair company also. no luck NEW
by: Mark in Florida

The repairman arrived and quickly let me know a loud fridge is my house's fault for having hard surface floors that don't absorb sound...lol...even after pressing the issue he was adamant that loud knocking noises are normal for any modern french door fridge. If what I'm hearing from this fridge is the new normal, I'd rather have an old fridge! I did take note when he said that Frigidaire won't even pay them any more for noise complaint service calls (I had also complained about pooling moisture between the doors, evidently, the only way I even got a tech to come out). So, if they don't get paid then where is their motivation to problem solve?

I mentioned a couple of the fixes herein and he dismissed them. He basically said that most brands are using a release valve component that POPS/KNOCKS/BANGS when it opens/closes due to pressure.

I just have a real hard time believing that hundreds of thousands of households are experiencing bangs loud enough to wake them up at night.

Hmmm.

Mark, not sure what part of Florida you are in. If you contact Electrolux / Fridgijunk and can convince them to send Cannon Appliance out of Lakeland Florida, they are the ones who finally fixed mine. Unit has been quiet as a mouse since.

We would have thought that Frigidaire would have found a correction for this by now. Seems some have mentioned adding nitrogen, but none of the local warranty repair guys would do that.

Intermittent Loud Banging
by: Mark in Florida

My new Frigidaire LFHG2251TF has been making loud intermittent banging/knocking noises since I purchased it new at Lowe's, a few months ago. I thought it might go away after a bit of break-in(so I don't have to deal with it), but it's the same. I believe it related to the compressor due to it's randomness.
It sounds a lot like someone banging on a solid wood door. It is either one or two consecutive noises, either KNOCK or KNOCK KNOCK. It occurs about 4-8 times per day and it's loud enough that you can hear it across the home and loud enough to wake me up in the middle of the night. I'll call today and start the process.

Never Again
by: Anonymous

Still dealing with what sounds like drive-by shootings in my kitchen every 4 to 6 hours.
I'll never buy a Frigidaire again.
Problem is, I suspect pretty much all of the "American" brands we used to trust are now Chinese trash. Just like what happened to RCA, Zenith, and Westinghouse.
I guess we know how the recent tax refunds were spent....
To invest in even more Chinese operations.

HELP -- My Frigidaire Fridge is Making a Loud Popping Noise NEW
by: Anonymous in Toronto

Anonymous in Minneapolis: My experience was exactly the same as yours. They applied the mastic fix which didn't work, and they refused to do the nitrogen thing. After a lot of back and forth with Electrolux they agreed to replace my fridge, which was a good thing. That was about 8 months ago. The problem is the new fridge is just as bad as the old one...same fire-cracker noises. I haven't built up enough nerve and energy to get all stressed again but will call them soon. Thanks to Paul for letting us all know about the nitrogen fix.

Update NEW
by: Anonymous

A Minneapolis-based warranty repair service sent a tech out to examine our Frigidaire side-by-side that is making the popcorn noise frequently. His solution: add the thermalmastic pads to "quiet" the noise. Well, that solution isn't a fix. The unit still pops. I even showed him the RF0901 Service Flash and he kind of smirked then suggested it could be the ice maker making the noise. I'd be relieved if all I was hearing was the ice maker motor.

Next step: Call Frigidaire/Electrolux (again). Complain about the noise (again) and set up another service call. This time, though, I'll insist they add nitrogen to the system.

Popping noise update... NEW

I had the Electrolux tech come out monday (10/21/19) and complete the official Electrolux Service Flash (RF0901) shown here:

Next, locate and click on the link called: RF0901 2-16-09.indd - HVAC-Talk

And I must say that after convincing the tech to actually do it, since he has completed it, My fridge has been whisper quiet! No more snaps, crackles, or pops! So I'm here to tell U that adding the nitrogen into the Freon lines did do the trick!

The problem that adding nitrogen will resolve NEW
by: Paul

Here is a brief description of the problem I was experiencing, with my Frigidaire, that adding nitrogen resolved:

About 20 seconds after the compressor comes on a popping noise starts (similar to pop corn popping but louder). The popping last for about 30 - 60 seconds and then the popping noise stops. The compressor runs a normal cycle and stops. The popping noise does not happen again until the compressor comes on again and after about 20 seconds the popping noise repeats as before.

For Bill NEW

Bill, contact Frigidaire customer service and ask for a list of authorized Service Techs / Repair companies in your area. Then, give them (the Service Techs Repair companies) a call and discuss the problem with them. (I had to go through several Techs / Repair companies before I found one that was familiar with the problem). The bulletin I provided is straight from Electrolux. (Manufacturer of Frigidaire) It is their fix / solution for the popping problem.

That is what I had to do to get popping problem fixed.

This is the company that performed the procedure on my Frigidaire:
(Solid State Service, Phone number 405-384-4541) They verified the Service bulletin and determined it was an authorized Service bulletin. Next, they performed the procedure according to the bulletin. I called them a few months later and told them my refrigerator was working fine and they told me that since they had become familiar with and were aware of the bulletin, they had successfully performed the procedure on several refrigerators. My refrigerator has been working fine since then.

Maybe you could them a call and discuss the popping problem with them. They may be able to help point you in the right direction.

This fixed my Frigidare NEW
by: Paul

It has been almost 1 and 1/2 years since I had the following procedure done. Not a single pop since then.

Nitrogen is added to the cooling system.

This is what I did. I Emailed Frigidaire customer support. I then ask for a list of their authorized repair companies in my area. I started calling the companies and explained my situation. When I found one that seemed to know about the issue I was experiencing (popping noise) I had them come out to my house. I gave them a copy of Electrolux service bulletin RF0901.

To get to an online copy of service bulletin RF 0901 that you can copy, print, etc. is a little tricky.

It is still there. I checked it today. 10/8/2019.

It does not cost anything.

First paste this URL in your browser:

https://search.yahoo.com/search?p=service+bulletin+rf+0901%3F%7C&fr=yfp-t&fp=1&toggle=1&cop=mss&ei=UTF-8

Next, locate and click on the link called: RF0901 2-16-09.indd - HVAC-Talk

The second page of the bulletin describes how to add nitrogen.

That's the one you want so you can print, copy, ETC. whatever you need to do with it.

When the service techs arrived, I gave them a copy of the service bulletin. (They had never seen the bulletin before even though that bulletin is a few years old). After they (Solid State Service, Phone number 405-384-4541) researched it and verified it was an authorized Service bulletin, they performed the procedure (added nitrogen) according to the bulletin. I called them a few months later and told them my refrigerator was working fine and they told me that since they had become familiar with and were aware of the bulletin, they had successfully performed the procedure on several refrigerators. My refrigerator has been working fine since then.

Give it a try.

Popping sound.. NEW
by: Anonymous

This loud popping gives me a heart attack every time! I finally decided to look it up! I thought for sure it was the ice maker. Confirmed it was in the off position. So now what???
If what I've been reading is true, that it's a normal occurrence that is unfixable, I'm in on any petition. Hopefully nobody in my house ends up actually having heart attack from this before something can be done.
(This, unfortunately reminds me of buying a bag of chips back in the day and it was Darn near full! Not anymore! Isn't it false advertising to not let the consumer know in print that the "Bag is half filled"? If not, it should be!!) Thanks for the vent session!!! Much appreciated!!!!

Frigidaire sucks NEW
by: Noah

I will NEVER buy another Frigidaire or Electrolux product ever again.

I was told that most new refrigerators will have that pop sound, but for the hotline to say, "our products have a plethora of sounds, and they are all outlined in our manual"

so I guess by writing down all the defects with the products that should make them "Acceptable"

I have 25 more days to see if this new refrigerator will quiet down, but I will not keep it , if its going to POP POP POP all the time.

I'll just go to a used appliance place and buy a 90's refrigerator if that is what it will take to have a quiet refrigerator.

HELP -- My Frigidaire Fridge is Making a Loud Popping Noise NEW
by: Chris in Toronto

Reply to Anonymous. The mastic that they applied to the coil only helps for about a week or so. The loud popping noise will continue just as bad as before. The noise doesn't have anything to do with the ice maker, mine is turned off.
In my case the popping noises continued for almost a year before Frigidaire finally agreed to replace the fridge. I was really happy....and then the same problem started with the new fridge after a couple of weeks. It is so bad I literally jump out of the chair when watching TV at night and the fridge goes off like a gun shot. Its unbelievable that they continue to sell these fridges.

Frigidare - popcorn popping sound NEW
by: Anonymous

Got tired of the popcorn popping sound so I called frigidare and pretty much sweet talked them by telling them I have always loved Frigidare appliances but...
So a tech came out explained the issue basically stating that they all do that, especially the side by side models, but he proceeded to install some sort of sound sheild or something around the coils making the sound (there must be some sort of kit out there or something), and I must say thatalthough it didnt eliminate the sound, it did muffle it a bit and the frequency and length of it going through that cycle has decreased dramatically.
As far as the loud ice dropping and turn style cycle which occurs after the ice dropps, well you're just gonna have to live with that! Give it a shot!

partially fixed NEW
by: Bill

I was able to get them to replace the slide latches on the freezer door to get rid of the loud snapping sound with my extended warranty, but the loud popping from the compressor continues to be an issue that they refuse (or are unable) to correct. I suspect it is due to poor design of the cooling system components, and is most likely corrected in newer units as I can't imagine anyone tolerating this as "normal operation" as I am told by both Electrolux and their repair people.

Same Popping Sound NEW
by: Chuck

We've owned a new Frigidaire 22.2 cubic foot side by side (FGSS23335TF) for one month. It started making the popping sound several times a day after having it for just a couple weeks. Not looking forward to several weeks of service calls, but we're hopeful they can get this repaired or replaced.

Same story NEW
by: Bill

I don't believe Electrolux even has an Engineering team here in the US anymore (as many other companies). I'm sure they just purchase from a Chinese company who has their own operations elsewhere (Mexico or Korea) and put their name on it. I have heard that quite a few American-labeled appliances are actually made by Samsung and LG to name a few. Many companies take advantage of present tax loopholes that make this practice favorable for their bottom-line and their stockholders. Consumer satisfaction has become a lost art.

Freezer latch pop NEW
by: Anonymous

Bill - I have the same issue with my bottom freezer latch when opening. Frigidaire Gallery is only one year old. My biggest problem is the loud pop noise every 6-8 hours. I think i’ll call warranty on the freeze door, and while they’re here hopefully the pop noise occurs. Plus I also have the lil drummer boy sound occurring, what a pile a crap they’re letting out the door these days. Electrolux/ Frigidaire your engineering team should fired.

Same popping issue and then some! NEW
by: Bill

I also have the same popping issue and have been told the same thing during several repair attempts. Just recently both of the latches at the end of the freezer door track are now making a loud BANG when I open the freezer door. Seems that there is a lever on both of them that normally latchesin the forward position, but has snapped out and to the rear of the latch. I can reset it manually, but it keeps coming unlatched more as time goes by. Wouldn't you know that the warranty just expired about 2 months ago!
Now I have a new noise to live with every time I open the freezer. I tried to find some replacement latches at the various parts suppliers online, but I am told they are no longer stocked.
This will be the last Frigidaire I ever purchase!

I love the comment that says this sound is an extra from the manufacturer to enhance my experience. I call B.S! NEW
by: Rocco

I have two neighbors and a relative who have purchased new refrigerators over the last year (not Frigidaire), and have not had any noise issues. My Frigidaire (which is just over a year old) not only makes the exact popping noise most people here are complaining about, but occasionally makes a noise similar to something hitting the fan blades, which goes away after a few minutes. After having 3 service calls during the warranty period and being told on the first two calls that they couldn't fix something they couldn't hear, and finally on the last service call that it is "normal", this will be the last Frigidaire appliance I ever purchase.

Frigidaire Quality NEW
by: Anonymous

The popping noise you are hearing...that sounds like pop,pop,pop,pop,pop....in a rapid pattern is the Freon coolant expanding.... Its a special feature that Frigidaire has designed in to enhance their customers experience. My Frigidaire started to do it when new...back 8 yrs ago...then went mostly silent and then reappeared recently. I had factory service over many times to fix and they couldn't. The only solution the factory recommended was to reroute part of the cooling system to out side of the fridge....sort of like what they had 80 yrs ago. What I find fascinating is how any company can design such a terrible terrible product with known design problems and deem it acceptable to manufacture. I for one will never purchase another Frigidaire appliance. I did receive 12 "we are sorry for any inconvenience we have caused" apologies from Frigidaire.....which only made Frigidaire feel better.

Popping noise
by: Kat

I was also told that it was normal to hear this noise by an Electrolux repair guy and the rep from the co. I call BS! Yeh service guy said it was because of the Freon moving through the tube and that it was normal for ALL refrigerators. Really? I’ve had other refrigerators all with Freon and not one has made this sound. I’m furious. Had it happened before the 30 days were up where we purchased it we could have returned it. It’s only 6 months old and the noise started about 3 mos after we bought it

Pop noise - Frigidaire Gallery refrigerator
by: DesertRacer

I'm experiencing a pop noise (take your knuckle and rap the side of the fridge type of noise) that occurs around every 12 hours gice or take. The service tech that came by today thinks its the materials separating. I showed him my video clip of the noise. He seemed to shrug it off and was in a rush to exit. I understand these type of issues are difficult to locate since everything else seems to work correctly, but he showed he really didn't care to evaluate the internal components or listen to the compressor.

I've got the RF0901 technical bulletin in hand now to show them. Let's see where it goes. I told them I have eight months on the warranty and I want it documented that the problem is getting worse.

by: cdmanoise

Tom,

It's likely not your ice maker. There is usually a switch inside the freezer next to the ice maker to turn it off. For your own sanity, turn this off for a day or so and you will likely find it's not the cause. Don't bother looking, as there is nothing you can see - it's an internal problem with the refrigeration system. Though, according to Electrolux I'm sure they will tell you it's not a problem. I was told the same at first, until I starting advising legal avenues based on the unit keeping my entire family awake at night. I will report back after a few days on how this fix worked.

Frigidaire fridge making loud cracking/popping noise NEW
by: Chris in Toronto

On Oct 15, 2018 I posted that my loud popping noises on my Frigidaire fridge seemed to have resolved after the technician applied mastic to the evap cables. Well, not so fast, it soon started again and was just as bad as before.
Electrolux eventually agreed to replace the fridge with a new one. After a few days the same problem started but not as frequent as with the previous fridge, but just as loud. I've given up fighting, can't take it any more.

Also, everyone should be aware that when a fridge is replaced under warranty, the new fridge is only warranted for the remainder of the original warranty. You do not get another full year on the new fridge. This was news to me, but makes sense that the manuf met their obligation on the original warranty by replacing the fridge, an that's it. Darn good thing I had just bought an extended 1 yr warranty which they transferred to the new fridge.

My Frigidaire Fridge is Making a Loud Popping/cracking Noise NEW
by: Chris in Toronto

Paul and Cdmanoise: I made a few posts back in July about loud pops/cracks from my Frigidaire fridge. They were mostly single loud cracks (like a fire cracker) about 5/6 times a day, and occasionally two pops in a row.
Paul advised me about the electrolux service bulletin (rf 0901). The service technicians were never able to hear the sounds while here and refused to accept an audio recording on the basis that it was not actual evidence. I provided the service bulletin but they claimed it was not for my model (which is not true because the bulletin says for "all refrigeration". After a lot of jawing back and forth, the technician agreed to try the first step of the bulletin to see if it made a difference. This is the application of mastic pads to the evaporator cables (?). It's in the bulletin. Frigidaire would not authorize the nitrogen step.
After the modification, there was an immediate improvement in the compressor operation. Light cling, cling, cling sounds that were there constantly were now gone and everything seemed to run quieter; BUT we still had the big problem of loud cracks/pops. I continued to fight for the Nitrogen fix but to no avail. However, after several days I started to notice a decrease in the frequency of the sounds, and for the past 3 or 4 days we haven't heard any. It is now almost two weeks since the mastic pads were applied. I am going to keep my fingers crossed and hope I never have to fight over this again. Thought you might be interested in my experience. Will let you know if the problem returns.

Fridgidare POS Refrige Still Making Noise NEW
by: cdmanoise

No. They finally sent a tech out here from Cannon Appliance who listened and waited a few minutes rather than force the refrigerator to run which never seems to produce the problem. The problem has gotten worse, and it's like having a drummer living in your kitchen. The tech said it's an issue with the Capillary tube. He contacted Electrolux tech support and pushed them to request replacement of the tube, evaporator and refrigerant. Now awaiting parts. This guy seemed pretty confident, and hopefully he is the one "quote from The Matrix".
I will also add this - Not only do I hate Electrolux, and have had my fill with ten appointments to date and countless hours on the phone arguing with them, but I would urge anyone in my area to avoid AllSet Appliance. This last guy who came here, also commented and the hack job AllSet did on the original repair of this Refrigerator.
Stay tuned - the saga continues.

I copied this information from the following link:

file:///C:/Users/p1sal/AppData/Local/Packages/Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe/TempState/Downloads/623_RF0901_Evaporator_Feed_Noise_2-16-09%20(1).pdf

Evaporator feed noise comes after the compressor has been off long enough for the pressure in the system to completely equalize. Then, when the compressor starts, only vapor is going up the capillary tube. After the compressor has run 30 to 45 seconds, there is enough head pressure to drive liquid up the cap tube, but there is still some vapor mixed with the liquid. This vapor-liquid mix is causing the sound, it will only last for a short time. Once the head pressure is high enough to compress all the vapor to liquid, and only liquid is going up the cap tube, the noise will stop.

Maybe your compressor is not building enough head pressure?

Also, you can copy, print, etc. Electrolux Service Flash RF 0901 from the above link.

Hope this helps

I listened to your audio clip. The popping noise sounds similar to the noise that was coming from my refrigerator. (Except for the not stopping part). Maybe you could give the guys at Solid State Service a call. Phone number 405-384-4541.

They will at least be familiar with the problem and maybe they have had experience with a refrigerator that was displaying the exact same problem as yours. (They told me they had done the nitrogen procedure on several refrigerators).

You would know if you are on the right track or not.

Here is a brief description of the problem I was experiencing. (I just want to make sure we are talking about the same problem):

About 20 seconds after the compressor comes on a popping noise starts (similar to pop corn popping but louder). The popping last for about 30 - 60 seconds and then the popping noise stops. The compressor runs a normal cycle and stops. The popping noise does not happen again until the compressor comes on again and after about 20 seconds the popping noise repeats as before.

This is what I did. I Emailed Frigidaire customer support and let them know I wanted a second opinion. I then ask for a list of their authorized repair companies in my area. I started calling the companies and explained my situation. When I found one that seemed to know about the issue I was experiencing (popping noise) I had them come out to my house. I gave them a copy of the service bulletin. (They had never seen the bulletin before even though that bulletin is a few years old). After they (Solid State Service, Phone number 405-384-4541) researched it and verified it was an authorized Service bulletin, they performed the procedure according to the bulletin. I called them a few months later and told them my refrigerator was working fine and they told me that since they had become familiar with and were aware of the bulletin, they had successfully performed the procedure on several refrigerators. My refrigerator has been working fine since then.

I copied this from a previous post that I posted a few months ago:

My refrigerator is operating the same. (Same amount of cooling, same amount of time between compressor cycles and the amount of time the compressor is operating). The only difference is: The popping noise is gone.

I had it done a few months ago. (No more popping). Give solid State a call. They told me they have successfully corrected the popping issue (several times) using this procedure. One of the companies that first came to look at my Frigidaire wanted to change the evaporator coil (a major repair that, if not properly and expertly performed, will likely damage the refrigerator). I told them I would like to get another opinion. I am glad I went the nitrogen route, I have not had any problems since then and am happy with my Frigidaire refrigerator. Hope this helps.

Adding Nitrogen NEW
by: cdmanoise

Thanks Paul,
I read your previous response with this information about adding Nitrogen and the study as well as the bulletin. It is Electrolux who has been dispatching the repair companies to work on this system (or should I say butcher this unit) so why wouldn't they advise them to do this? On another note, there was some other independent lab who supposedly did a study on this and claims it's a bad idea. I'm no chemical Engineer, and don't believe half of what is posted on the internet nor do I know what refrigerant this unit uses but here is the post:

The following statement is being made in "refrigerant upgrade" courses in the Toronto area. Perhaps it has spread further. IT IS NOT TRUE. That it is false has been confirmed by an independent chemical consultant and a contact at Dupont, independent of each other.

Here is the statement:

"When nitrogen is added to R-134a, the nitrogen bonds to the R-134a molecules and cannot be separated creating a new blend. Therefore, if nitrogen gets in contact with any R-134a charge, the charge must be replaced. Unlike air, nitrogen cannot be purged from R-134"

Electrolux insists this is normal, and I should read the manual RTFM. Sorry Electrolux, the idiot stamp was never pasted on my head and stop blaming the ice maker as it's turned off. Very frustrating to get woken up by this beast in the middle of the night. 3 months and eight service visits, still going strong making popcorn.

My Frigidaire Fridge is Making a Loud Popping/cracking Noise NEW by: Chris in Toronto NEW by: Anonymous NEW
by: Anonymous

A little more info for Chris. I had a refrigerator that was not defrosting properly. I could press on the very back of the freezer compartment wall (wall of freezer that is parallel with the freezer door when freezer door is closed) and hear ice crunching. The crunching noise was the result of ice buildup on the evaporator coil that had not been defrosted properly. As the ice accumulated and expanded it pressed against surrounding surfaces resulting in an occasional loud "pop". (You may also notice that the refrigerator is not keeping things as cold as usual). Hope that helps...other than that I am stumped.

Chris...I had a refrigerator that was not defrosting properly. I could press on the very back of the freezer compartment wall (wall of freezer that is parallel with the freezer door when freezer door is closed. Directly behind that wall is where the evaporator coil is located.) and hear ice crunching. I found out that if the ice that accumulates on the evaporator coil is not defrosted it will continue to accumulate as it accumulates and expands it will press on surrounding surfaces and as a result loud popping noises will be produced. It will also impact how affectively your refrigerator operates. (You should notice that the refrigerator is not keeping things as cold as usual). Hope that helps...other that I am stumped.

My Frigidaire Fridge is Making a Loud Popping/cracking Noise NEW
by: Chris in Toronto

Anonymous: Thanks for your comments. yes, it is a single loud crack/pop that is sometimes louder than others. I had checked a few times immediately after the sound to see what was happening with the fridge. Everything was quiet, nothing was running. But then about two days later there was the normal running sound (compressor?) immediately after the noise. So I can't find any pattern. There are other odd sounds throughout the day which I can live with. Apart from the noise the fridge operation is okay.

Frigidaire popping noise (how to view the Purdue.edu doc) NEW

Chris..it sounds, from your brief description, that the noise you are describing is different than the one I had. My refrigerator made a popping noise, more like pop corn popping. There were many pops for about 30 seconds when the compressor first started. After 30 seconds the popping noise stopped until the next time the compressor started. You seem to be experiencing a single loud pop that happens several times throughout the day. Is that correct?

Frigidaire fridge making loud cracking/popping noise NEW
by: Chris in Toronto

We have a french door/bottom freezer fridge which is 6 months old. Since new it has made the popping sound, sometimes not so loud but other times very loud, sounds like a gunshot or a metal ball falling to a hard floor from some height. We hear it about 5/6 times a day. At night we can hear it in our bedroom upstairs with the door closed. When watching tv you can literally jump out of your seat it is so loud. I'm afraid someone could get a heart attack from this.
The service man that came out said he can't do anything about it if he can't hear it. How do we get Frigidaire to address this issue? Does "adding refrigerant" really solve this problem?

I'll check with Frigidaire on this fix. After having the nitrogen added, did it require resetting the thermostat to attain the same cooling, or do you notice it running more? I'm just curious if adding nitrogen to the coolant affects efficiency.

Did they perform this service under warranty? The last time I had them out to perform what is described at the first cure in the service bulletin (figure 1 and figure 2, which I saw on another site), I was told that since it was a modification from the normal design, he couldn't do it. I'm thinking that the installation of a line tap is something else they would refuse to do under warranty.

Update on New Frigidaire NEW
by: K. Moore

Here is more on the new Frigidaire, after day two. I agree with another post that said the popping is from the freezer. The metal cover inside, rear of freezer compartment has two 1/4" screws securing it to the back. When the coils began to cool down (or) when the defrost cycle heater begans, that metal panel pops and bangs. I loosened the screws just a little to take the stress off of it, but not enough to fall out. This allows the panel to expand and contract when it gets hot and cold. I believe when I was pressing on the sides when it was cooling down the first time, I was feeling and hearing the panel inside fighting with its mounting. So far, it still makes other noises, but not the popping or banging. Also, remember, most refrigerators run defrost cycle twice a day.

Still the same NEW
by: Anonymous

Fridge is still making very loud popping noises and the "wrrrrr" sound on occasion. Other than that, it is still running OK. It appears that Frigidaire is certainly aware of the issue, as they constantly state it is a "normal" sound. It get the impression from them that they know about it, also know that it is a manufacturing defect, and really don;'t intend to do anything about it.
One repairman eluded that they have heard this complaint many times before, but since it never happens when the repairman shows up, nothing can be done.

Popping is caused by... NEW
by: K. Moore

I just got a new Frigidaire FFHT2032TP1. About 1 hour after I turned it on for the first time, I heard loud popping, banging and scratching. I thought my daughter was hanging something in her room. Heard it again louder, like there was a squirrel in the wall behind the Frigidaire. The third time, I knew it was the refrigerator. I rolled it out to look behind it. The fourth time I heard it pop and bang, I could feel it in the side of the unit.

As the refrigerator is cooling down (first time, it's new), the contraction of the plastic interior AND the expanded foam insulation pulling away from the warm metal exterior is the cause. I pressed on the metal side and, POP, BANG, CRACKEL! It was loud. Cars and any other device that undergoes a rapid hot cold cycle will do this. But the the sounds are not usually this noticeable. The question is... mine is new, will it stop once it cools down and temp stays stable? Is the expanded foam stuck to the back of the metal cabinet like glue? If there is no thin plastic jacket for the foam to slide against the metal. If the cooling foam is trying to contract faster than the metal cabinet (or) slower than the plastic interior, we could hear this anytime there is temp change.

My advice is to gently push in the outside of the cabinet the next time you hear it pop. Maybe it will help the foam let go of the metal and plastic and stop doing it in the future. Someone here said to level the refrigerator. Yes, it your unit is not level, it will flex the cabinet and make the popping worse. So level it up.

noise NEW
by: DAN

FRIGIDAIRES ARE CHEAP PIECES OF CRAP, ice makers pops and snaps, I think the ice maker heater has a design flaw it doesn't loosen the ice enough to let the paddles to push the ice out of the tray or the timing is off, the popping noise is the plastic gears jumping the drive teeth then when the ice finally gives the pressure on the gears throw the ice all over the freezer. I will never buy another Frigidaire product again ever.

Re: popping noise NEW

It's not due to pet hair. This problem started on day one after I received the new unit. Frigidaire claims that it is a "normal" noise. It just started making another new noise that sounds like something hitting a fan blade ("rrrrrrrrrr") that fades out after a few minutes and comes and goes, or stops when the door is opened. I have a repairman coming out later this week to check this noise out.
Other than all of the racket this thing makes, it seems to be working OK

Frigidaire FFHG2250 Loud Popping
by: Anonymous

I just purchased a new Frigidaire FFHG2250 fridge and immediately noticed an occasional very loud popping sound that sounds like someone dropping a golf ball onto a wood floor from about 20 feet. It is so loud, it scares both me and the dogs! I contacted Frigidaire customer service who initially sent me a copy of the pages in the manual that describe all of the other "normal" sounds other than what I am hearing. I'm certain this is a design flaw and I will be ignored by Frigidaire until I "go away".

To: p1salmons - Popping Noise
by: upnorthjonny

I tried a simple tweak that significantly improved the situation. The capillary tube running up to the fridge compartment had about 5" of extra line coiled up near the compressor. I (carefully) uncoiled the line and routed it so about 2" or so contacted the top of the compressor housing. In effect, a sort of mini heat exchanger.

The comprssor was still quite warm when I did this, and after several minutes I opened the door and waited for it to cycle back on. To my surprise, there was no popping noise intially. After maybe 30-45 seconds, though, I did hear a few quick pops - but they were faint and subsided quickly. I replaced the back cover, and monitored operation for couple of weeks.

The results varied slightly from cycle to cycle, but there was a marked improvement in the level and frequency of this noise. On occasion, I'd hear a pop or two which were louder than usual, but not too bad. When the fridge cycled more often as summer heat increased, the noise disappeared completely during some cycles. It would appear that adding heat to the capillary slows down (or eliminates) the initial cold-shock inside the filter-drier which, I believe, is the source of the problem.

I still have plenty of time left on my warranty if the noise gets worse. But for now the unit is cooling just fine, and I'm hesitant to call out a service tech, based on so many user comments about their inability to diagnose and correct the issue. I do not want to make the problem any worse. You know the saying: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

So for now I'll let this ride and continue to monitor the unit over time. The mod I performed will not invalidate your warranty, as long as you don't damage anything in the process.

If your warranty has expired though, you may want to go a step farther and follow the directions for extending the capillary further into the compressor compartment, and fastening it to the discharge (liquid) line for a more efficient heat exchanger. The author claims this is 100% effective in eliminating the pops, but I can't confirm this. The only reason I didn't attempt this mod is that it creates obvious signs that the unit has been modified. But based on my experience, the logic behind that mod is solid, and it should work - capillary heat seems to be the key element here. You could try a less invasive approach, such as heating the cap tube with an external source (hair dryer, heat gun, etc). This isn't a permanent solution, but if it gets rid of the popping temporarily - you've nailed down the source of the problem without changing the system. And if some tech or CS rep tells you this is 'normal', you can politely tell 'em that you know better.

Sorry this post is so long. It's a complex problem, and I don't want to give anyone information that could make it any worse. It seems that many of today's refrigerators are afflicted with this so-called 'normal' sound, but the manufacturers seem unwilling or unable to mitigate the problem. I was lucky, and at least was able to find an acceptable workaround. But, like you, I expected much more from a $900 appliance. Good luck to all.

This Could Be The Fix
by: upnorthjonny

We bought a new (2016) Gallery 20.4 Ft top-freezer model one month ago. Since first power-up, it's made the popping/snapping noise each and every time the compressor starts. Lasts for 15-20 seconds, and doesn't seem to affect cooling performance. No ice maker is installed. We like the fridge a lot, but that noise is getting old.

As an engineer, I prefer to analyze symptoms and narrow down possible causes before calling any service tech out. Sometimes you get lucky, and the cure is relatively easy. This could be one of those situations.

And it has to do with the fridge not being level and that somehow affects the condenser (or whatever) inside. Once the fella on utube adjusted his fridge (on the bottom front after you open fridge door) his fridge stopped making the noises. And there is no ice maker on this fridge. My sister has one that makes same popping noises and she says the fridge thinks it has an ice-maker in it - REALLY? a fridge thinks? I will tell her about the utube video lol

Samsung fixed my popping sound. I just bought the fridge; it has a warranty. From what I read, it has to do with the physics of the heating element touching the cooling elements and they just invented a fix. The fix works. But hear the story. First I called Samsung. The customer service rep told me the obnoxious popping sound was "normal" and that I could write the president of the company if I was unhappy. She gave me the address of the president. I then called the store that sold me the appliance and asked for warranty service assuming from what I had read that some of the technicians know how to fix it. The tech came out and said that there was a "bulletin" out on the problem which is like a recall. But it is a secret recall. He brought a part that has been made to fix the proximity of the heat and the cold. And the problem is solved. But you see from this that Samsung won't own the problem or at least they make you go through hoops. The problem does NOT come from the icemaker although it certainly sounds like it does. It is NOT just a Samsung problem; it runs across the brands. The fridges are all similar.

I have had the exact same problem as everyone else here. Loud gunshot popping sounds when the compressor shuts down. It scares the hell out of me every time. They cant find anything wrong and basically trying to say it's normal. I have had a lot of different fridges in my time, and slept in hundreds of hotel rooms with fridges in them, and never heard these noises before.

"Refrigeration Dark Ages! by: Richmond BC Canada "
Just thought I'd do a follow up... got my fridge going again last spring and it worked for about 3 months before quitting again: more food spoilage, after an expensive grocery shop at Whole Foods! Did some research online and got my Brother to help. We found the freezer fan was not spinning and he got it going. But because it only did work for a few short months again and then losing all that food a 2nd time (quit of course in the heat of the summer), I would next time just go out and buy a new one rather than trying to repair again (even by a professional)... seems just not worth the headache, hassle and financial loss of (expensive) food.
The good news is that I did get a new fridge (last summer) and I absolutely love it. It is the best fridge ever (touch wood)!!!
No popping sounds (as of yet) and it is working beautifully.
Only sound it makes is when it is doing it's defrost cycle and it is just a pleasant, gentle humming sound.
My new fridge (bought from Trail Appliances) is a Whirlpool. French doors up top and pull out freezer drawer on bottom.
No ice maker or water: 30" wide, 31" deep and 67" high (had to fit in my small condo kitchen). Paid around $1,800.00 CAD + tax etc. We will see how many years I do get out of this one, hopefully more than 5!!! Hope this follow-up is helpful to others cuz I know my experience was an absolute "pain in the you know what"! 😀 (Finally!!!)

Ping Pong ball sounds
by: Anonymous

My kitchenaid started out with a sound as if a cabinet door was shutting. Later it added a loud pop. Then it added a ping pong ball bounce. The bouncing got longer. Waking us up at night. I was going to get a new one until I slid the little tabs on both crisper trays from high to low. It stopped immediately and has not done it in several days. Might give it a try. I am not sure if some have tabs and some have dials, but fixed my problem.

Most people here are talking about Frigidaire's. Mine s a brand new Whirlpool and does the same thing. I did call the manufacturer right away and didn't understand what he said but essentially, like everyone else- it's "normal"! Never had noise from older refrigerators.

Ice Maker to blame on my Maytag
by: Sleeping Again

French door Maytag refrigerator with bottom freezer drawer was making loud popping sounds. There was no ice storage bin and no water connection and the ice maker wire shutoff arm was in the off position (up). Pulling out the electrical connector linking the ice maker to the the inside of the freezer fixed the loud noises. There are still occasional soft popping noises but 95% of the problem was the off but plugged in ice maker. Not sure how old this Maytag is since it came with the house but it looks fairly recent.

Whirlpool After All These Years
by: Anonymous

I purchased a Whirlpool in 1998. It has been perfect from day one. Just recently, 17 years later, it has started the loud popping. Though some bottles had fallen over in the fridge. Nope. Then started doing it regularly. Thought the poor thing was finally quitting on me. Thought I'd check the internet to see if its fixable. Apparently NOT. So, what do I do???... live with it, or buy a new one and still have to live with it. When will America wake up and realize we need to make our own products???!!! At least after reading all these comments, I won't call and pay a service man to tell me "Its Normal...!"

Refrigeration Dark Ages!
by: Richmond BC Canada

[copied and pasted from an email just sent to my Mom and my Brother upon finding this web page:]

Check this out...
I managed to find this link with people complaining about various makes of fridges making loud noises, which can be startling, can be even be heard throughout the house (if you live in one) and even wakes them in the night from their sleep. From a $1000.00 fridge to a $2400.00 fridge. People are told by the stores they bought them from, the manufacturers of their make and from service repair people that this is (the new) normal, even if it doesn't start from day one (what the ?&&@??). People (consumers) are pissed off!!!!!

Though these complaints are about noise only, mine has been making these same loud popping noises since it seems the fridge compartment quit maintaining a cold enough temp to keep food from spoiling (early December).
[freezer working/no ice maker].

In one of the the complaint/comments, a person said they were told by a service-repair-man that you are lucky to get more than 5 years out of a fridge now a days!!!
What bull crap!

The wonderful world of modern technology!!! Aren't we lucky! They can fly a man to the moon but they can't make a fridge anymore that is quiet and lasts more than 5 years!!! And where do we put all these dead 5 year old fridges?!!

If I do have to get a new fridge, is this all I have a choice of looking forward to???
Sounds like the new (modern) way they are making these fridges is the problem as fridges of the past (which would last 20 years) didn't make these noises.
I guess I am lucky(?) as the one I have did last 10 years.
The research continues...

Kenmore Frigidaire
by: Anonymous

My Kenmore Frigidaire with bottom freezer started the popping noises within 6 months of purchase and seems to be getting louder after a couple of years. It sits in an alcove in my small kitchen.
Recently I had to move the fridge into the dining room for a few days while my new kitchen floor was laid and the fridge never made any popping noises at all while in the dining room. As soon as it was moved back into the kitchen into it's alcove the popping noises started again with a vengeance.

I am so disappointed in todays products, nothing but poor quality. Won't purchase at Sears again.

Popping Noise
by: Anonymous

We had that popping noise for 3 months after we had repairs done to our 2015 Frigidaire when it stopped cooling. After 3 repairmen could not stop the popping noise (they told me it was normal)I finally got a good repairman who said they overcharged the Freon in my frig when they did the repair to correct cooling problem. He got the Freon back to the correct level and bingo, the popping stopped.

Unbelievable how many bad repairmen are out there. 1 guy would not even look at the frig, he said this loud popping noise was normal and walked out. Another guy put tape on the cooper tubing carrying the Freon because he said they were knocking into each other.

Frigidaire popping noises
by: Anonymous

I found this online. I hope it helps. I finally know what that noise is.
The defrost timer can also make noises. It usually will make a click when it advances. As the timer gets old, the motor that runs the defrost timer can begin to make noises as well. If the timer motor is making a loud sound, then you should replace the entire timer. Noises related to the defrost timer are: snapping, crackling, or popping sounds. This is most likely caused by the defrost heater getting warm, and cold water dripping onto it. You may also hear some metallic sounding expansion or contraction creaks as the coils warm or get cool.
I found this too...
Adaptive Defrost Control
An adaptive defrost control or ADC system attempts to save energy by fine-tuning the timing of defrost cycles. An electronic processor monitors how long it takes to defrost the evaporator coil during each defrost cycle and adjusts the time between cycles to optimize efficiency. Frigidaire ADC systems run defrost cycles of about 30 minutes, with between six and 72 hours of compressor run time between cycles.

nervewracking popping
by: Ann

Bought a new GE GSE22ETHWW refrigerator from Lowe's. Started popping from day one. It pops when the fridge's motor turns on and lasts 15-20 minutes, probably 5-6 times a day. Not sure about during nighttime when asleep. My old 23-year old GE TFX 24R refrigerator never made a sound and I'm so disappointed in these new refrigerators. No one told me that this is supposed to be a new "normal" noise for "new, modern refrigerators". If I had known, I would have kept my old refrigerator until it died. I certainly hope that with all these complaints that I'm seeing about new refrigerators being noisy, the "smart" people who design the next newer ones will figure out a way to stop this horrible defect and start making quiet refrigerators once again. PLEASE!! And, I'm getting my old fridge back too!

My parent's Frigidaire nightmare
by: Marie 2014

The fridge worked ok for approx 4 years. Now it is making popping noises which can be heard throughout the house. When I visit it wakes me up. The fridge looks brand new - no wear and tear - yet it sounds like an old piece of .....

When manufacturing moved to China - everything become disposable and garbage. When you pay over one thousand dollars for a fridge it should last. I called the technician and he advised me to NOT bother putting money on repairs. He said if your fridge lasts 5 years now, consider yourself lucky. Fridges used to last 10 years or more!! The landfills are going to be filling up faster and faster. We will never buy a large fridge again. What a waste of money.

Popping noise
by: Anonymous

I have a top of the line LG model that I bought a year ago and it starting a loud popping noise about 4 months after it was delivered. I contacted both the store where I bought it and LG, and I was informed by both that the noise was normal. I said if it were normal, then why did the noise start 4 months after it was delivered and not immediately. I also stated that I have had many refrigerators and never had one that made a popping noise. I was informed a tech would be sent to investigate however, if nothing was wrong, I would be charged for the service call. I reminded them that it was still in warranty and they said it doesn't matter.

Popcorn popping sound
by: David

So what's the solution? Normal is not the answer, and any repair person who would say something like that is an idiot. worse, thinks you'll buy "normal" as an answer, making you an idiot. I have had mine replaced - with no success. Popping, growling, and an annoying change in the tone of the unit when it's not making popping or growling noises.

Hell's a Poppin'
by: TheGeezer

We purchased a Samsung French door in June of this year. It started making popping noises almost immediately. At least a dozen times a day I'd guess. As others have indicated, the Samsung line is that the pops are "normal." Normal in whose world I say. They offered to send a service person if I requested but warned that if the service tech found nothing wrong there would be a 55.00 charge. I'm sure the service tech is well-schooled to call the popping noise "normal" per Samsung instructions. I am surprised to see that the issue is affecting some non-Samsung units as well, so I don't feel quite so stupid about our choice. Other than the popping the fridge works just great.

No worries.
by: Anonymous

It is the expansion and contraction of the metal components during the "defrost" cycle.

They can vary in intensity, duration and type over the life of the unit.

You can hear the same type [causal] of noise when an automobile is "cooling" after being driven and parked.

loud pop
by: John

Our Kenmore (made by Whirlpool) fridge also makes a loud pop when cycling off. It is loud enough to sometimes wake us up at night. Consumer Reports didn't recommend Whirlpool because they are noisey but I didn't think to ask who made it. Serviceman says it is becoming a common complaint with a lot of fridges perhaps due to trying to make them more efficient. Nothing he could do.

Upright freezer
by: Anonymous

Our 10 year old upright freezer started this "popping" about 6 months ago. We have an extended service contract with Sears (Frigidaire Commercial 9 cu ft), they came out but could find nothing wrong. There is a removable service panel on the inside, but the screws were tight. It sounds like metal expanding. I sent and E-Mail to the company two weeks ago and have heard nothing from them.. Freezes fine, but the noise is getting old.. Frigidaire won't be on my shopping list.

New Frigidaire is Also Loud
by: Anonymous

We had to make a spur-of-the-moment refrigerator purchase when our old one quit working. We bought a black Frigidaire (Model # FFHT2126PB0) with the freezer on top. From the moment it was plugged in, we noticed periodic clunking/popping noises whenever it runs - like marbles or ice clinking together. Sometimes it is so loud we can here it in the next room, over the TV. In addition, the refrigerator arrived in horrible condition. The front doors were all scuffed up - the finish had been worn off in some spots, likely due to being transported at some point with plastic on it. The place we bought it from is going to replace the doors, but don't seem to care about the noises it makes. This will be our last Frigidaire purchase!

frigidaire noises
by: Anonymous

Frigidaire MODEL #FPUI 2188LR - Since new, it has made noises - a bit like 'marbles clunking' and also makes 'growling' noises ( almost like a stomach growling) during most ON cycles. OFF for about 30 minutes, then ON for about 8 minutes. During most 8 minute ON cyles it will repeat the pattern of the clunking marble-like noises followed by long growling, then low rumbling, then sometimes back to a few marble-like noises before ending that 8 minute cycle. There are times that it will make very little noise during the ON cycle, but it is fairly consistant with it's noise making. It can be heard from rooms away when it gets going. My old 20 year old refrigerator that this one replaced was extremely quiet (GE) - never made any noises at all - so this one so far has been a major disappointment.

Popping noise every cycle
by: Anonymous

Bought a top of the line Frigidaire fridge back in 2009 (Gallery Professional top freezer model) at Sears.. Makes popping noises with every cycle. Very annoying. It worked normally for a month or two, then began the popping noises. It still cools well. But the noise is very annoying. I'm no engineer, but I would think it is the refrigerant gas suddenly expanding as it hits the coils in the fridge. A basic design flaw? Needless to say, I would not buy another one.

Compressor pop
by: David

My Kenmore side by side refrigerator has a pop/crack each time the compressor turns on or off.

Not really a life altering problem....but still it does wake me during some naps in my recliner.

Sounds almost like a bat hitting a baseball. Just one crack on and just one crack off.

First guess is a solenoid moving..maybe the compressor switch if it has any internal moving parts.

And then sometimes it is totally quiet when the compressor switch kicks in.

All else is smooth and quiet...just that pop.

The popping is torture
by: Jen

I was under the gun to buy a new fridge because my old one died. I went with a Frigidaire and it is making the exact same horrible popping noise. I describe it as a musical chipmunk. It's been making the noise since day one, but I foolishly thought it would go away.

Now, I've been around a lot of refrigerators in my day, and none make this horrid noise. The repair guy also claimed it is normal. How can Frigidaire not have fixed this issue yet?!

Fan is NOT Running If Its Hot
by: Anonymous

I figured out why it was hot in the middle of the side by side Frigidaire. The fan was stuck that cools the coils on the back.

One of the blades was bent ordered new fan blade $4.97. Easy to fix if the compressor is still good if not that is $1000.00.

Re: Our Fridgidaire Fridge is Making the Same Loud Popping Noise!!
by: Anonymous

We have the same issue -- our Frigidaire fridge is making the same loud popping noise!!

It's a brand new fridge, just plugged it in and there's a popping noise every compressor cycle. It lasts for approx 10 seconds, but it happens 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

We were told it is Freon expansion! The compressor is just a pump and pushes the gas through the refrigeration lines. For some reason some Frigidaire models are noisy.

We had a technician over and we were told its normal. That's crap!

I've worked in HVAC on compressors, chillers, air conditioners, cooling towers, heat pumps and have never heard those types of noises coming from 134a gases.

We ended up taking the fridge back and are now buying a different brand of refrigerator.

I only wish I would have found this website before we made the mistake of purchasing our first and last Frigidaire product.

We have the same problem!!
by: Jan-Texas

My Mom bought a Fridgidaire side by side in May and she is so irritated by the popping noise that she takes out her hearing aids so it won't bother her.

I talked with Lowe's and they denied knowing of any such problem and since it is past the 60 day time limit, there is nothing they can do.

I am not sure what options she has except to either live with it--she lives in a small apt. and the kitchen adjoins her living room. Or, buy a new one.
