Whirlpool Refrigerator Light That Flickers

We have a whirlpool side-by-side. It is about 8 years old.

The lightbulb went and we replaced it but the bulb only "flickers". Thinking it might be a bad bulb we got another bulb with the same results. With the door open we hear a distinct "noise" coming from where the bulb is screwed in.

Any ideas?
