Question About Whirlpool Refrigerator Fan Motors

by John

I have a question about Whirlpool refrigerator fan motors:

Do the 2008 model year refrigerators have a track record of fan motor failure, or did Whirlpool simply change suppliers?

Purchased my Whirlpool refrigerator in November, 2008 and last night it needed a new fan motor (in the freezer) installed.

The repairman told me that nothing I did/did not do
caused the motor to fail. Though I did notice that the failed motor was made in China, the new one was made in the USA.

Thank you.

2ND Whirlpool Fan Motor in TWO Years!
by: Anonymous

Purchased a Whirlpool top freezer fridge 2 years ago. A week after installation, the fan motor went. Part and repair was under warranty.

Now, 2 years later, the fan motor has gone, again! Stay away!!

Bad Whirlpool Fan Motor
by: Anonymous

We bought a Whirlpool top freezer refrigerator (model ET1MHKXMB) in Oct '08 and nearly two years later the fan motor died.

Like the other reviewer above, the original fan motor was made in China while the replacement fan motor was made in Canada.

I replaced a 16-year old Amana with this Whirlpool; the Amana never had a problem.

I wouldn't recommend a Whirlpool refrigerator to anyone. When you make a major purchase, you expect the appliance to run problem-free for more than 2 years.

Not Sure...

John,

Was the repairman specifically from Whirlpool? Or was it someone you called in to fix it? You may actually want to ask him why he chose to use an American part instead of the Chinese version. We'd bet that he would be the best person to ask if it was better.

Otherwise our best guess is that Whirlpool hasn't changed out their suppliers instead the part that was used was probably a replacement part whereas the Chinese one was the original one.

We hope to hear more feedback from our visitors if they have any other information to add.
