I am joining in with the others who have given a bad refrigerator review of the KitchenAid Architect Series stainless steel side by side refrigerator as well as KitchenAid's customer service.
This unit was installed February 2004 to replace a dying refrigerator in my town home as part of a complete kitchen renovation. I lost power in September 2005 for 8 days after Hurricane Wilma.
Within several days of the power coming back on, I had a spider web crack in the door to the butter compartment and cracks in the plexi handles of the produce and meat drawers in the refrigerator. Cosmetic but annoying.
Roll forward to February 2011. I come home from work to water on the floor and a defrosting freezer. Service comes out the next day and said that I need a new compressor. I was shocked !
This is the fifth new refrigerator in 30 years of being a homeowner and the first compressor that needed replacing. Within 36 hours of the compressor installation, I notice an 8 inch long bigger-than-hairline-sized crack in the liner of the freezer, obviously due to the temperature change. Cavity liners go out of warranty after 5 years.
Well I just got off the phone with KitchenAid and was told, "Sorry, the liner is out of warranty on your 7 year old refrigerator, so you'll have to pay for service". When I said that answer was not acceptable and that this crack was a direct result of the temperature change from the compressor breaking, I was transferred to the "Management Team".
They then repeated the same warranty statement. In response I replied, "Do you understand you are p*ssing off a repeat customer with a kitchen full of KitchenAid products?" He pretty much just said have a nice day.
I am done with KitchenAid and when this one croaks, I will visit this website to read customer reviews before buying anything else!
