How Much Extra Space Does a Refrigerator Need for Air Circulation?

by Pat
(Toronto, Canada)

I'm not sure how much extra space I need for around my fridge for air circulation and proper venting.

I have an opening of 33" and I am looking at a side by side refrigerator measuring 32.75". Is it better to have some space on either side of the refrigerator to ensure good operation? I cannot seem to find a side by side under 32.75".

Thanks

Refrigerator Clearances for Air Circulation NEW
by: Dennis

My Owner's Manual (KitchenAid) says 1/2" for sides and top for ventilation and "more" for back for icemaker tubing and electrical plug. BUT it has an exception:
If installed next to a wall, allow 2" on side next to wall so that door will open fully but MUCH more than 2" to remove drawers (I add - unless frig can be rolled forward and turned slightly to get more space to remove drawers.)
I would also add - If in an old house, or a newer one whose walls/floor are not vertical/horizontal, make sure top of frig will clear the upper wall cabinets. In my contractor built home, the upper cabinet are not exctly over the frig opening at the floor and are off vertical about a 1/2". Result is the frig touches the wall at the bottom left and at the top on the the upper right. 1" clear on both sides would roll in a LOT easier
