VERY Loud Compressor Noise NEW
by: Anonymous

My wife and I recently bought a french door Whirlpool fridge, Model WRX735SDHW08 and am waiting for Lowe's to come back to pick up the unit as we returned it within the initial 48 hour period. My bad for not reading the reviews on Lowe's site first. Just like here, lots of low reviews due to excessive noise. One guy described the unit's compressor hum as a lawn mower noise, but to me, it actually sounds like a clothes dryer in its final high-speed spin cycle. It is continuous and is driving me crazy. I refuse to subject myself to that grating sound. Nor do I think I could ever get used to it. Think "pure radio static" or "nails on chalkboard". As such, it absolutely needed to go back and I am so appreciative that I did not miss the 48 return deadline. A real shame since, otherwise, we liked the unit.

Yep. Mine is buzzing. Less than a month old. I pulled the back panel off, likely the compressor fan is touching something. I haven't found a permanent fix yet. Everything else is working fine. Model WRS588FIHZ

Extremely noisy refrigerator compressor NEW
by: Anonymous in California

Anybody interested in filing a class action against Whirlpool? Email me here at g2ghkqmk22@privaterelay.appleid.com (I use private relay for privacy)

My brand new whirlpool refrigerator (WRT318FZDW) is extremely noisy and is less than one week old. The loud buzzing noise is constant and comes from the compressor vibrations. I unplugged for 10 seconds, and that did not resolve the issue. I documented the noise via video recordings with peaks at 83 decibels. My brand new unit is under warranty, yet Whirlpool Customer Support has declined to provide support. They declined to respond to my emails. I reached out on Facebook, and they blocked me on Facebook Messenger. I called Support to request to speak with a supervisor to seek resolution, but the support agent refused and she hung up on me.

I scheduled a certified service tech who was lying through his teeth, pretending he could not hear anything. He refused to inspect the unit. However, I recorded our conversation, in which we can hear the loud buzzing noise coming from the compressor vibration, which sounds louder than our conversation.

This refrigerator is advertised by Whirlpool as "quiet cooling". But the compressor noise exceeds 83DB (normal conversation is 60DB). Consumer laws prohibit misrepresentation.

It was purchased $1k + taxes + delivery, and it is under warranty. But Whirlpool declined to provide support on units that are under warranty. Consumer laws enforce warranty rights.

I think I have a strong legal claim. If you experienced the same issues, please email me, and we can file a class action together.

Noisiest refrig ever NEW
by: tom Pollock

Purchased a Whirlpool side by side this past summer. Replaced a 10 yr old Samsung. Too bad I could not have given it a test ride at the dealership!
Every time the compressor is engaged it sounds like an old jalopy in a 1930's cartoon. No excuse for that. Absolute junk in my opinion.
Shame on me for keeping it.

whirlpool side-by-side the noisiest appliance in the kitchen NEW
by: t double b

Purchased a Whirlpool 20.6 cu-ft side-by-side refrigerator to replace a 20+ year old refrigerator. When plugged in for the 1st time, the compressor noise was significant, much louder than my 20 year old fridge. I figured once it got up to operating temperature it would quiet down, it never did. I checked the decibel level after a couple of days and it read between 60 to 64 dB's. Note: 30 to 50 dB's is considered average room noise, noise above 70 dB over a prolonged period of time may start to damage your hearing. I'm very concerned with the constant noise. For the first time ever, I can't wait for an appliance to fail, and after reading through this post it won't take long. Shame on you Whirlpool.

We call it Wheezy! NEW
by: Anonymous

Bought Whirlpool fridge in May 2022. Right away noise a lot louder than just fridge humming Contacted retailer and was told to contact Whirlpool. Can't get anyone on the phone of course. Repair person came out and ordered new fan and installed. No difference. Have to close bedroom door so can sleep at night. Makes noises multiple times a day. Had repair person come out again and said they would contact Whirlpool for solution. Been 2 weeks and no call back. Called and still no reply. Worst post purchase support I have ever encountered so far. Will contact their customer service but I am not optimistic. Reading other comments here looks like a bought a dud fridge. Should have done better research.

Whirlpool Fridge is Junk NEW

Bought Whirlpool Model WRS555SIHZ in June 2022. It failed in October 2022. Technician showed up in about a week and said new compressor needed. And someone would come and install parts. Evidently parts are not available and will not be available for another month or so. It is almost impossible to get any information or help from Whirlpool.

Having same problem NEW
by: FJF

I have been dealing with the same problem for 6 months now. I measured the sound level at 62 db. After first complaining they sent out a tech, a young man fresh out of repair school. He came in listend and said, sounds normal to me. I asked if he had sound meter to test it. He replyed No we do not use test meters. I asked what are the sound level specs for this model. He replyed No they do not have sound level specs. So i asked how do you define normal without testing and without sound specs? I say 62db is not normal. He could not answer, just saying it sounded normal.

After i started a small claims lawsuit Whirlpool HQ starting talking with me. So far they have offered a 65% refund. I said No i want a 100% refund. We are still talking now.

Whirlpool Refrigerator Freezer 25.2 NEW
by: Anonymous

My Whirlpool 25.2 refrigerator freezer is now 30 years old and I do not want to replace it. However, it appears that I may be in the market for a new one. My current refrigerator (side/by side) is mechanical and not the new digital fragile items available now. Truthfully, the only problem I ever have had was to replace the ice maker this past year. I know they tell me they don't make them like they use to and that is a shame for I truly have had a great appliance.

Based on this, is there a good option out there? Glass spill guard shelves, crisper, chilled meat keeper, snack drawer, adjustable door and interior shelves, plus ice and water thru the door and
more. Yes, it sounds like a love affair and it is. Now what is a good replacement option? One can only hope the is still a good Whirlpool out there.

Another Whirlpool victim here. After waiting months I finally got my new 20.5 cu stainless steel top freezer refrigerator. I am so disappointed AND annoyed beyond belief. They must be Whirlpool dealers. Anyway, I feel your pain and agree that Whirlpool is junk just like everything else that is manufactured today.Corporations think it is perfectly okay and just want is to replace this junk every 5 years. Whirlpool fridge is JUNK NEW
by: Anonymous

Bought 3 appliances, all Whirlpool including a Whirlpool side by side fridge 9/12/21. It’s SEVEN months later and it died. Lost entire fridge worth of food. Started making a weird louder buzzing noise clicking on and off. Then stopped cooling both sides. 5 days later independent tech says it’s the compressor, major repair, main component of the fridge. His company can’t even get the repair parts. Whirlpool has parts on back order for possibly MONTHS but will not replace fridge. Horrible customer service. Would not provide supervisor name or contact. Then tried to offer us an extended warranty on their piece of crap appliance!!!! I don’t think so. They expect us to go months with no fridge and a family?? Needless to say they lost our business forever. Every appliance we have is Whirlpool. No more….

Only 2 years old and a broken piece of junk
by: Molly R

Bought a Whirlpool model WRS588FIHBOO in late December of 2019. Here it is April of 22 and have had 2 repairmen look at. One didn't know how to fix but billed me anyway. The other told me I need a new door because WP ran wiring into door on left at the bottom and opening and closing of the door breaks the wires so now I have problems with the lights coming on (right now I have no lights because repairman said we need to "fool" refrigerator into thinking the lights are off otherwise warning light beeps constantly. He did get icemaker to working but dispenser of ice does not work so have to take ice bin out each time I need ice. A piece of junk from top to bottom. Last Whirpool appliance I will ever buy. For $1600 dollars this piece of junk lasted 2 years.

I really wish I came across this site before I bought my Whirlpool refrigerator. Like others have said, I've never experienced such a loud, noisy refrigerator before. What a piece of ….
by: Dennis

Okay, I really thought I was the only unlucky one, until a few minutes ago when I came across this page. My Whirlpool just makes this terrible sound when it starts, it’s comparable to the sound of a dump truck driving right by you. It’s loud enough to wake you up in the middle of the night. It does subside after a few seconds, but then the running fridge sound is also really annoying and distracting. I never believed it was possible, but after reading the comments here, I guess it’s just normal… Normal by Whirlpool standards!

Wirlpool SBS is junk NEW
by: Scot

My Whirlpool SBS is the worst major purchase I have ever made. It was defective as new. The factory repair people ruined my brand new hardwood floor by rolling the frig across it. The frig freezes the contents regardless of settings. The doors are constantly opening themselves. I have paid over $500 to independent repair technicians. The last one fess up that Whirlpool is such junk that they refuse to take factory service contracts.

You have been warned.

Just BAD - not a lemon NEW
by: Anonymous

If there was a lemon law for products my Whirlpool would be replaced the first year. My Whirlpool is about 6 years old but I am just fed up with it. Bought from Lowes, they replaced it within a month. Technician came out several times to take care of various annoyances. After that I just gave up.

The small drawer with separate temp control stopped working...didn't fix it. Numerous times the cheap plastic rollers broke on the freezer drawer...stopped fixing it. And it IS NOISY!

There are so many stupid filters to replace on this thing too. It's like owning a car.

My last fridge lasted over 10 years with no major issues. We replaced it because we were moving and wanted a bigger fridge - what a mistake by buying Whirlpool.

Beware, do your homework because there is an OEM that makes fridges for Whirlpool / LG etc. all the same. You might think you dodged a bullet because you didn't buy Whirlpool but you basically buy the same thing under a different brand!

Light NEW
by: Anonymous

First a drawer broke and I had to buy the whole thing. $200.00. Then one of the led lights started getting dim, $200.00. Then after a year the led light is again going dim. Called a so called licensed technician who said the one I bought the first time was the wrong one and now I needed another one. Another $200.00. My refrigerator started to leak water and I researched on line and found that the tubing had frozen and needed to be thawed out. Repair was $100.00. By now I could have bought another refrigerator. I hate this piece of crap. It is only 4 years old.

Noisy Whirlpool NEW
by: Anonymous

I have always purchased whirlpool appliances. I always loved them and never had any issues. I was a loyal customer until I purchased a new 28cft whirlpool side by side with ice and water. The noise level is atrocious. I live in a townhome where the kitchen and living room area are one. I have 3 bedrooms and I hear this loud humming all over my house. It disrupts my tv viewing. It is so annoying I can't stand it. I would return it and buy a different brand but there are no refrigerators to be had. I wish I had seen these comments before I bought, but my old whirlpool was not like this. I regret this purchase only for the loud humming lasting over an hour at a time.

So, I can say Samsung NoFrost fridges (like that https://kodumasin.ee/et/samsung-brb26605fww-ef/)are very noisy too. The service said that it will go better in 2-4 weeks, but I'm not so sure ... My old fridge was 10 years old Zanussi and it was very silent.

I have owned my Whirlpool for 3 months now and I can also hear the telephone sound people complain about. What I can't understand is how in the world there are this many crybabies in this country. It's barely audible and I thought it was funny when I heard it. I have perfect hearing and it is not an issue at all. As far as the ice goes, it's loud if the bin is completely empty but otherwise it's the same as any other fridge. You snowflakes need to grow a pair and move out of Mommy's house and get your own super soft running fridge so you can store all of your soy products. Wuss

Whirlpool Could Care Less NEW
by: Joe No Whirlpool

I just had my 7 month old whirlpool washing machine and my whirlpool refrigerator go out at the same time. I have to go a month without the washer while I wait on parts. I have to wait another 2 weeks before their repair man (or repair woman) to come out and tell me the 3 year old compressor is shot. Then I will have to wait for the parts to get here and a time when the service person can come out to fix it.

I wonder if it will do any good to say I’ll never buy another whirlpool appliance again because all brands pretty much sell nothing but junk now. The last good refrigerator I bought was a Kenmore I bought back in the 90’s that ran trouble free for 20 years. It stayed with the house I sold and I have no doubt it’s still running today.

To the person who said they were very happy with their refrigerator, all I have to say is give it a little time and you’ll be here complaining just like the rest of us.

Oh yes, I forgot to add the whirlpool representative I spoke to was so sorry this happened to me but really don’t give a damn that I’ll be a month without a refrigerator and washing machine

The worst ice maker ever! NEW
by: John Howard

It would seem that in the 2020’s they could make a decent ice maker! This Thing is so loud that visitors are shocked at it. It makes grinding noises and even with a half full bin, when a load falls it will wake everyone up in the house. While dispensing it always leaves one or two in the chute. Once those cubes melt a little they fall onto the floor. We always have a puddle during the day. Never again Whirlpool!

Love my new Whirlpool side by side NEW
by: oldned

In contrast to the many very questionable reviews about noise, I am VERY happy with my Whirlpool 28 cu.ft. side by side. Modern refrigerators run more than old ones because they use smaller, more efficient compressors, and the little internal fans run almost constantly to keep uniform temperatures inside. Now I'm sure some people are more sensitive than others to sounds, but my refrigerator is very quiet in the kitchen and totally inaudible in the rest of the house. Maybe y'all got defective ones, maybe not.. so good luck in finding something you're happy with.

I too can't stand the sound. It is quiet for awhile but if you are a light sleeper and it kicks on again through the night it is awful. Earplugs as someone mentioned really are necessary. There should be some way to deaden the noise. Mine sounds like a low lying space ship and is totally annoying. I did see that noise was a factor when I purchased, but I didn't have much choice so had to go with Whirlpool. Do something to change this!! Totally unacceptable.

Frig Just Installed 4/17/2021 NEW
by: Sarasota FL

Lowes just installed this model: Whirlpool model WRS3155DHZ05 and it runs constantly and SO LOUD I can't stand it. The hum can be heard all over the house and I'm sick about it. Spend $1,800 on this. The prior Kenmore Elite didn't last 5 yrs and last week would not freeze or get cold in frig. This Whirlpool is absolutely horrible. I'm calling salesman at Lowes and Whirlpool directly. Hate the refrigerator. Perhaps a LG brand will be better.

Very Noisy NEW
by: Disappointed

After much research (apparently flawed) we ordered a WRS588FIHB side by side in August 2020. It finally arrived March 2021. We were soooo excited!
The excitement did not last long as we soon realized how much noise this unit makes! The rattling, gurgling noise almost never stops and can be heard throughout my 2400 sq ft house. It sounds like someone is playing bongos at a fast clip in the back bedroom. It is literally all I can hear.
I called the local appliance store from which we purchased the unit, only to hear the owner say "Welcome to modern refrigeration", which obviously was not what I wanted to hear.
Two service people from different companies came out and, like many others on this list, I was told these sounds are normal. I contacted Whirlpool and was told that there is nothing they can or will do since two service people say the unit is acting as designed.
I spent a year researching and listening to other refrigerators in people's homes and NEVER once heard the sound this refrigerator makes!
So, I cannot keep this unit because it is driving me crazy, and I'm afraid to buy another because the result may be no better. I've thrown away $1800.
Clearly, posting on this website doesn't change anything, other than to allow people to vent, but I'm posting anyway.
Suggestions on a replacement anyone?

rebranded whirlpool - ikea fridge, loud as heck NEW
by: Anonymous

Yeah, the ikea side-by-side I inherited with the home I purchased is super loud when it kicks on. There is a deep hum and a rattle. Cracking sounds. Water sounds, and if i ever use the ice, then the ice dropping in to the maker is enough to startle anyone in that room. The dimensions/capacity are good. If it weren't for the awful sounds it would be just fine.

Not Happy with Whirlpool!
by: Dave

Do not buy any 18 Cu Ft Whirlpool Freezer-less Refrigerators in White or Stainless. All are garbage, between us and our friends we know, this
Whirlpool WRR56X18FW & the Model # WSR57R18DM are both garbage, even with the warrantee you will spend $400 to $700 in repairs in less than three years of owning this refrigerator. We strongly DO NOT RECOMMEND ANYONE TO BUY EITHER OF THESE REFRIGERATORS. The sad thing is, we always bought Whirlpool appliances in the past. We had one refrigerator last more than 12 years. A freezer lasted longer. A dishwasher that lasted more than 10 years. Everything now is designed to fail and not even affordable to fix and keep it. I bought the top of the line Whirlpool refrigerator three weeks ago. The noise levels and the constant running will drive you crazy. My fifteen year old refrigerator was much quieter than this piece of garbage.

My old frig died and I was in a rush to get a new one. I wish that I did more research.

It will cost me $500 to return it to the store so I will try to sell it online. There is no way that I can live with this noisy piece of junk

Whirlpool likes to brag that it is American made. Yes, American made garbage.

The noises are only part of the problem NEW
by: Anonymous

We were lucky to get any frig when we bought it in July of 2020, as nothing was in stock. It took 2 trips to install and the larger door still "flies" open and must be held. We were told it's so cheaply made it can't really be leveled. The water dispenser is hit or miss whether or not it will work. The design of the drawers is also very poor as is the water / ice dispenser. The builder also bought a range which is junk.

Horrible refrigerator NEW
by: Anonymous

Purchased in July 2019 the the top freezer and within 2 weeks the frig motor or fan was so noisy and annoying could not stay in kitchen very long. Called Whirlpool who sent a technician to look and listen, and said that The cheaper Whirlpool frig ($800) sound that way due to cheap fans and motors made in China. That problem was enough to deal with, and in Oct 2020 the whole refrigerator turned into a freezer, everything in the frig freezes, despite using the lowest settings. I emailed Whirlpool and their response was could be too close to walls, which it is not. So, I have an $800 frig that is a piece of junk. So Beware of Whirlpool and their service . Very disappointed and frustrated with Whirlpool.

I bout mine about mine about 3 years ago, absolutely hate it. Noisy, ever since I purchased it. I should have had the guys take it back as soon as they plugged it in. I'll never purchase anything of theirs again!!! Constantly wakes me up, have to turn tv up everytime it runs and kitchen is right next to my bedroom.

Sleepless in Seattle (North Carolina) NEW
by: Adrian W

AGREE 100% with the comments posted. Our Whirlpool refrigerator WRX735SDHZ03 drips, gurgles and churns ALL night long. It occasionally takes a break then resumes all over again for complete 24/7 irritation coverage. I called Whirlpool customer service today and they are sending out a technician, but I am not optimistic based on the comments. Sadly, the owner's manual states 10 different noises/sounds (what a joke) that their units could make, basically covering themselves for this faulty product. Technology is supposed to have improved over the years....not gotten worse.

whirlpool—won't purchase due to obnoxious sounds NEW
by: Daniel

I live in a "luxury" (yeah, right) apartment community and we are blessed with all-whirlpool appliances. never in my near-40-years on this earth have i been so aggravated with a refrigerator—this beast is so loud, and like others on this page, i have been woken up by my dumb, loud refrigerator. the noise is beyond disruptive. whirlpool has done themselves a disservice by supplying their appliances in this community—it is the worst advertisement imaginable—i know i will not ever purchase their products for my home, and i am sure many others in the community feel the same.

Any suggestions on how to quiet my annoyingly loud Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator? Any suggestions on what refrigerator would be a quiet replacement? This is maddening...

If you're lonely, but a Whirlpool and you'll have a constant companion. NEW
by: Anonymous

My old GE refrigerator was dying a slow death, so thought it was time for a replacement. Based on extensive online research regarding reliability ratings, I decided to go with Whirlpool. From the second we plugged it in, it started - hums, groans, gurgling, purring, buzzing, churning - it was a cascade of noise that never stopped. It was like having R2D2 in your kitchen. When the condenser motor kicked in - and that was quite often - the noise would get so loud we had to turn up the TV volume in the next room. Whenever you used the water/ice dispenser you were treated to a new barrage of noises as it refilled. Also, when a new batch of ice was done, the cubes would make a racket as they fell crashing into the in-door holding chamber. I'm not exaggerating - this fridge would occasionally wake me up at night. I tried to get used to the noise, but it was giving me high blood pressure so I'm in the process of returning it (thank you Costco). My new GE fridge was just installed a couple of hours ago and it was an immediate improvement - peace has been restored. Honestly, even if the original Whirlpool was beyond the return window, I would have sold it on Craigslist for a song and bought something else. I hated it that much. 2 more non-noise issues with the Whirlpool: the doors were uneven so it looked crappy (the installation guy said that it was within tolerance levels and was just how it is) and it had casters instead of wheels so it was a bitch to move and scratched my hardwood floors. It was a failure in many respects. Bye bye Whirlpool - never again.

New French door whirlpool sounds like a cicada NEW
by: Anonymous

The fan noise is acceptable but when the compressor kicks in there is a loud buzzing noise. It varies if I "rock" it like a vending machine, and it can vary on its own. It is level. It does remind me of a cicada.

Model WRX735SDHZ03

Much louder than the prior units from GE and Kenmore (still have the Kenmore and working after 30 years)

Brand new french door Whirlpool is NOISY PIECE OF JUNK!
by: EdP

This is a new townhome and new appliances - all Whirlpool. The refrigerator noise is just deafening and incredibly frustrating as its an open plan lounge/diner/kitchen and we have to turnup the TV louder. This is totally not acceptable.

The noise is a constant loud hum/ buzz, then a cyclic loud hum. I am definitely not going to be buying another Whirlpool appliance as long as this continues.

High pitched buzzing NEW
by: Anonymous

I've had my Whirlpool french door refrigerator (WRF757SDHZ) for approximately two days. The near constant high-pitched buzzing noise is about to drive me insane period everyone in my house can hear it and Whirlpool states that this is"normal". I really loved this refrigerator but I cannot deal with this constant buzzing. We have an open concept floor plan and when we're sitting in the living room the sound from the refrigerator in the kitchen is driving us all nuts. Absolutely ridiculous for Whirlpool to say this is normal.

Top Freezer Whirlpool sounds like a wolf howling NEW
by: Anonymous

I hate my new top freezer Whirlpool fridge! I've had since June and the noises it makes while running is horrendous! It sounds like wolf howling, knocking, and sounds like it wants to fail. I talked to Whirlpool and they are going to send a tech to check it. But said if they think nothing is wrong, I'll be charged for the visit! Has anyone else had a tech come out only to deny there was a problem???

THIS IS WHY THEY MAKE A LOUD DARTH VADER GRINDING NOISE NOISE NEW
by: Anonymous

THANKS TO THE FEDS, THEY KEEP CHANGING THE TYPE OF FREON BEING USED DUE TO CLIMATE CHANGE, AND NOW STARTING IN DECEMBER MAKERS HAVE TO SWITCH TO PROPANE, THE GOOD NEWS IT THAT PROPANE WILL WORK AT A LOWER PRESSURE AND THE FRIDGE SHOULD BE QUIETIER.
THE TYPE OF FREON BEING USED WORKS AT A VERY HIGH PRESSURE SO THE COMPRESSOR HAS TO PUMP IT UP TILL THE HIGH PRESSURE IS REACHED THAN IT IS RELEASED, AND THEN BACK UP AGAIN CAUSING THIS TYPE OF SURGING NOISE. IF THE MAKERS WOULD USE MORE SOUND PROOFING THIS NOISE COULD HAVE BEEN LOWERED, HOWEVER
THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT PROFIT, NOT US....THAT IS HARVARD BUSINESS MENTALITY. IF THEY WOULD GAVE ME THE CHOICE I WOULD GLADLY PAY MORE FOR THE SMALL COST DIFFERENCE. THESE MAKERS DONT EVEN TALK TO YOU
ON THE PHONE ANYMORE. YOU DONT MATTER TO THEM. BOTTOM LINE, I AM LOOKING FOR OLD QUIET FRIDGES TO
RESTORE (RETRO IS IN JUST ASK RICK DALE). THINGS WILL BE BACK TO QUIET AGAIN AS THEY WERE YEARS AGO. GOOD LUCK TO TO ALL

Constant Sound NEW
by: Anna

We just bought a Whirlpool and I told my husband I could hear a constant buzzing-like sound. Sometimes it's a sound goes up and down (not volume) -- different sound vibrations. It's driving me crazy. I know there is nothing that can be done. We would return the fridge but right now there are no refrigerators in stock due to the pandemic. The sound gets worse when you open the fridge but some kind of buzzing sound doesn't ever stop; there is always a high vibration in the background. An occasional sound is one thing but this is hard to endure.

Irritating buzzing since purchase
by: Pissed off

I bought a new refrigerator from Lowe's with an extended warranty and I absolutely hate this refrigerator! I called customer service too many times to count and finally a repair person came out. He was in my house literally 1 minute, listened to the noise and told me to put carpet underneath the fridge! Seriously!!!! I want to throw this crap at Lowe's front door! Never again! Whirlpool is garbage on every level to sell crap like this for thousands of dollars and know its malfunctioning!!! I'll try the sponge technique that the guy mentioned in the reviews because I've had it!

I solved the extremely loud noise from my whirlpool refrigerator NEW
by: Anonymous

The repairman couldn't fix it. He said to put a carpet under our refrigerator.

But I solved the mystery. Whirlpool should pay me since a number of people returned their refrigerators because of the "drive you absolutely insane" noise.

The noise is from the metal hose in the back. I placed a sponge between the refrigerator and the hose. Taped it with duct tape.

Praise God! It worked.

I would appreciate a gift from Whirlpool.

Mind Searing Buzz NEW
by: Anonymous

Refrigerators did not used to make loud buzzing noises. So why do they now? The noise from this Whirlpool is so loud I can hear it one floor down. And it is a two toned buzz, with both both high and low frequencies that makes your brain fry. It scares the cat. What engineering team could possibly have created such a monster? Thank god I have a 30-day return policy from Lowe’s. They can not get it out of my house fast enough.

I researched fridges for noise levels before buying my whirlpool. Unfortunately this site didn’t come up. I now have a fridge that pops and crackles as the refrigerant runs through it and am told that’s normal. I have owned a several refrigerators in my life and this is a first. Always thought whirlpool was a top level manufacturer but have since changed my mind.

Noisy NEW
by: Anonymous

Our Maytage fridge died after 15 years of trouble free use. I bought top freezer Whirlpool from Home Depot. Home Depot said I could return it in 48 hours but then their agent said there was a restocking fee about $127 dollars. Or they could get Whirlpool to send me a replacement fridge. I thought maybe I was being too sensitive and give the chance for the fridge to settle in. Now I feel like I am hooped. The fridge only has a one year warranty. But I don't think I stand even having this fridge in the house! I've read some of the tips but don't feel comfortable opening the cardboard piece for fear it will void the warranty. I am hoping Home Depot will take some mercy on me and let me return it.

I wish I would have seen these comments before I purchased my Whirlpool refrigerator. It is the loudest refig ever. I just got it yesterday and thought the noise would stop once it got cold. Noisy Whirlpool refrigerator NEW
by: Anonymous

Don’t buy a Whirlpool refrigerator! The new ones are very noisy, and a repair man will tell you that this is normal. They chug and gurgle whenever they are running. You can hear them from other rooms. One reviewer said they were embarrassed by their refrigerator whenever they had company. I wish I had read that before I bought a Whirlpool refrigerator. Beware!

If i would have I would of sent it back immediately. This refrigerator is so freaking loud and obnoxious that I can hear it in any room in the house including the downstairs bedroom. And it runs constantly.I've had two service men out to look at it they both say that there is nothing wrong with it that its just a loud model.Whirlpool says there's nothing they can do about it either because its broke. LOUD!!!
by: Anonymous

I purchased a Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator in October 2019. So disappointed. When the compressor kicks on (actually, it rarely kicks off), it can be heard throughout my entire house - and I don't have a small house. It sounds like someone left a lawnmower running in my kitchen. In order not to lose my mind, I have to keep my microwave fan running to try to mask the annoying refrigerator noise. I'm ready to roll the fridge out to the curb!

Noisy refrigerator NEW
by: Anonymous

Just had our new whirlpool side by side refrigerator delivered 5 days ago. I should have headed the warnings about how noisy they are. It’s horrible. The manufacturer should be ashamed to put a product like this out. They assume we will just get use to the noise. As consumers we need to quit accepting this. Lowe’s is getting it back! I will shop long and hard to find a manufacturer who makes a quiet one.

Very annoying grinding fan sound: FIXED (2) NEW
by: Anonymous

One last thing, the sound starting coming back, so I took off the cardboard shield and found that two copper tubes were touching and making the noise. When I gently separated them slightly the noise mostly went away. I put a piece of double folder gorilla tape between them and the noise went away.

Alot of little things you have to do, but for a "cheap"freezer, not too bad,

Very annoying grinding fan sound: FIXED NEW
by: Anonymous

All I did was put a double folded piece of cardboard I took from the protective cardboard it came with. went to the back left side and just pushed from the top to slightly tilt the freezer and slide the cardboard with my foot under the back left corner of the freezer.

Yes, if the feet of the freezer were properly adjusted it wouldn't have this issue. But noise stopped immediately.

It would be really hard for the delivery guys to fix the feet exactly level anyways.

Easy fix for noise NEW
by: HVAC tech

If like me you can’t stand the compressor noise from your Whirlpool refrigerator, here’s how you can eliminate it. Unplug it and pull out from the wall. Remove the bottom back panel. The compressor is in the right side. Take a metallic based bubble style insulating bag (I used a Blue Apron bag) cut it down to the same height as the compressor and cover it up. Make small slits in the side for the pipes and wires. Use a zip tie to hold it in place.

Once I did that and plugged it back it, for about 10 mins I thought the compressor had not started up, but it had. It is now so quite I have to be right next to the refrigerator and strain to hear it.

For a month now I’ve not experienced and problems. The compressor has an external overload that will shut it off if it gets to hot, but mine has not done that. I also bought the Lowe’s EPP for five years, so I figure if it makes it five years covered up, its ok.

If you were to ever need warranty service, be sure to remove this insulation before the tech arrives.

Whirlpool NOISE - Follow-up NEW
by: Greg G

For giggles, I purchased an inexpensive digital sound meter to measure the decibel level of our brand new Whirlpool side by side purchased at Lowes.

At the fridge: 58 dBA
10 ft from the fridge: 47 dBA

Research indicates that refrigerators typically range 40-47 dBA. So, this Whirlpool is well north of the high range. Making matters worse, it is a very annoying grinding sound which makes your teeth clinch.

1) Whirlpool "customer service" stated that an audio of the sound would not be helpful...clearly no quality assurance.

2) Lowes said that by waiting 37 days from purchase to report the problem, it is not THEIR problem.

3) The service tech Whirlpool sent to investigate says we have a noisy refrigerator and there is nothing we or they can do about it.

So, we are discarding and replacing our brand new Whirlpool. But will certainly do our homework re fridge noise this time.

Whirlpool NOISE NEW
by: Greg G

Very disappointed in our Whirlpool side by side model WRS315SDHZ02

Fans, consumers and shareholders of Whirlpool and subsidiary company Maytag for 35 years, our Whirlpool is the noisiest refrigerator we have ever owned. Our living quarters is an open concept kitchen, dining, living. So, we have a constant, annoying motor noise anytime at home.

We purchased the refrigerator from Lowes on December 3, 2019. Made our first service request 37 days later and today, February 10, 2020 made a 2nd service request. First service agent simply stated that this model is noisy and the disclaimer in the brochure accompanying refrigerator outlines "refrigerator noise". Being Whirlpool, I did not realize that I had and obligation to read the brochure and disclaimers cover to cover in order to protect myself.

I called Whirlpool customer service today (2/10/2020) adding that I would email them audio of the operating noise, but was told that would be helpful. Would think that Whirlpool has an internal quality assurance group. NOT

Hoping second tech visit later this month will provide a better outcome. Absent resolution, we intend to discard a brand new fridge and seek/purchase a quiet running alternative.

Again, I have a brand loyalty to Whirlpool. But it is waining and I encourage anyone contemplating a new fridge to shop wisely and research operating noise concerns.

Noisy Side by Side fixed.
by: Anonymous

First, make sure your frig is level front to back and side to side. There are two adjustable bolts to the front rollers behind the front bottom cover. That may fix the problem right there, but if not, roll the frig out and use your hand to press up against the lower cover in the back. When the rattle/buzz stops you have found the problem. Shove some cardboard between the steel and the lower back cover until the sounds stop. Your welcome!

Great Fridge... NOW. NEW
by: Anonymous

So, the fridge itself is gorgeous. The noise? Not. We actually had it for one day and scheduled a return. After having to wait for the 3rd party pickup and trying in vain to find any other fridge that would fit in our ludicrously small rented condo kitchen space, my husband decided to take the fridge out and look for ANYthing that would explain the sound of a lawnmower coming from the fridge. Understand me when I write lawnmower - I’m not exaggerating. In fact, that may be putting it mildly. After two hours until 1:30 in the morning and his cutting himself on the back of the fridge, low and behold, a ridiculous black rubber piece was taped underneath and behind the fan. Why? No reason. At all. It was almost as if whoever had a hand in building this part of the unit thought it’d be funny to tape something to the inside that would be too dark to initially see but cause a repetitive sound that makes you want to punch a wall. You can see where it was being rubbed up against. Shame I cannot post a photo. I had initally called and was told the sound was "normal". Of course it wasn’t. The laziness of the customer service agent? That was the only normal thing about this. Now the fridge purrs like a kitten and I canceled the return. Thank God my husband decided to think outside the box. Even the man who delivered our fridge after plugging it in and heard the noise said "These fridges make noise". As if I’m an utter idiot and have never been around a fridge in any of my homes, let alone anyone else’s. In the end know this, if you’re experiencing a God awful sound from your fridge the company will not help you. Listen to your gut and dig around the fan. Also, loosen the cardboard cover on the back. The light whistling sound will stop then too. In some cases, you'll need to adjust one of the legs if it’s not level. Best of luck to you all

I purchased the side by side refrigerator on 11/9/2019. I have had NOTHING but problems!!! There is a loud buzzing sound coming from the refrigerator. I have had the service company out 4 times and it is still not fixed. When communicating with Whirlpool, they say that the new compressors run loud and there is nothing that can be done. The buzzing sound is so loud it can be heard throughout my entire house. I spent thousands of dollars for a new refrigerator and it is a piece of junk. I will NEVER purchase a Whirlpool appliance again. Whirlpool does not stand behind their product and they do not care about their customers. BUYERS BEWARE!!!!!!

I found a Solution for Noisy whirlpool side by side NEW
by: Anonymous

Purchased a whirlpool side by side refrigerator two weeks ago. It started making a loud irritating rattling noise. We figured out it was unbalanced and too close to the floor. We removed the front bottom panel and adjusted the right side leg by raising it and it stopped making the irritating noise. The tilt must have balanced the compressor or other part causing the vibration.
Hope this helps.

Whirlpool side-by-side - NOISY! NEW
by: Anonymous

Brand new and junk! Compressor is noisy all the time and sometimes when it starts is sounds like a car horn or factory klaxon - to the point I jump out of my chair. So loud that I have to turn the TV volume up 3-4 notches while listening to it (30 feet away in a different room! And that's under "normal" conditions, not when the car horn sound occurs. Whirlpool said they'd send a technician out but if they did not find a problem, I'd get stuck with the $135 bill. The "problem" is poor engineering and poor quality control - something the technician could not fix anyway. Whirlpool side-by side 25 cu ft Model WRS315SNHM01. An embarrassing "Made in USA" product.

Whirlpool you disgust me!! Refrigerator broken after 15 months NEW
by: CGT

I'm so disgusted with the whole line of BS that you get when calling Customer Service. Nobody stands behind their products anymore.

We purchased a Whirlpool side by side in July 2018 just 15 months ago. As of last week the refrigerator side no longer gets cold and spoiled entire contents.

I did not purchase an extended warranty for more money as our last WHIRLPOOL SIDE BY SIDE lasted 19 years! I guess I'm foolish by expecting the same quality 20 years later! Service technician at our home now and it's not looking good. No help whatsoever from CS Dept. No warranty no help. Not with parts or anything.

I will tell everyone that I can about the sub par quality of their products.

You've lost a good customer.

Driving me nuts!
by: Anonymous

So sick of the constant noise from this refrigerator. Whirlpool customer service is one of the worst I have ever dealt with. First guy that came out didn’t even look at it and told me there wasn’t a problem. After several phone calls later another guy came out and said the hose was rubbing up against the back of the frig in three places and it was not level - something the first guy should have noticed. Thought it was fixed and about a month later it sounds as bad as it did before. Sick of getting The runaround from whirlpool and really sick of this cheap sounding refrigerator.

Bought French door / bottom freezer Whirlpool fridge from Costco five year ago. It’s already broken down. Spent 500 bucks trying to fix it. Still no good.
Freezer defrosts and dumps water on our floor. It makes noise like jet plane taking off. It doesn’t even have the dignity to die quietly. Just waiting for it to expire so that I can take a sledge jammer to it. Useless American-made junk. Shame on Costco for selling this brand.

by: Kalpana

Bought Whirlpool refrigerator from Costco - 25 Cu Ft Wide French door. I will never buy this product again. Makes very loud noise all the time and never shuts up. Food does not get cold evenly, Milk has ice and the freezer items are not cold enough! I bought the new one because my old refrigerator used to form lots of ice in the packaged food in the freezer section, guess what, the same problem with the new one. The noise is going to make me go crazy soon. Very poor customer service as well.

Today the delivery men brought in a brand new Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerator. I was so excited to get it, until he plugged it in, and my excitement turned to disappointment. I couldn't believe it, right of the bat there was a high-pitched buzzing sound coming from the freezer side. I told the delivery men to "take it back" that I could never tolerate that noise. He said he couldn't. I'd have to call customer service. I won't even contemplate keeping this thing. I just want it gone and cannot wait to get it out of here.

If I had only known... NEW
by: Anonymous

I only now discover this list, and I thank everyone for sharing.
Reading you all helped ever so slightly to lower my blood pressure, that has been stressed so badly for the past six weeks since I bought a new standard Whirlpool, without any frills that could have been adding extra noise.
Same story, same loud, intolerable,brain-killing drone that NEVER STOPS. I can no longer sit and work in my kitchen.
Also, same exact interaction with customer service person (sounds like the same lady), letting me know that I should stand ready to pay their service person if the new fridge is found to be "functioning to the manufacturer's standards."
I am past the 30 days, and I am so miserable that I am getting ready to send the thing to the metal dump, despite all my environmental guilt.
Problem is, I don't know what to buy instead that will not have the same problem...

Do not buy Whirlpool. ever.

Horrible noise poor customer service NEW
by: Caustin

I recently purchased a 24 SF bottom freezer online from homedepot, there was nothing to indicate the DB noise like in other developed countries so when it arrived I was shocked to clock a DB rating or 60. What's worse is whirlpool said since it is not broken, they would not accept it but would send a service tech who appeared and said the damper may be a little more noisy than normal but he could get a replacement. Even when the drone sound of the damper (low 60 cycle hum) was not on, it still produced a loud 60 DB noise level. Whirlpool eventually said that I am stuck with it since it is working PROPERLY! AVOID Whirlpool

Even when the drone sound of the damper (low 60 cycle hum) was not on, it still produced a loud 60 DB noise level. Whirlpool eventually said that I am stuck with it since it is working PROPERLY! AVOID Whirlpool

Told by Repairman that ALL fridge mfr's. are using cheap/loud parts NEW
by: Anonymous

My 81 year old mother just purchased a "no frills" Whirlpool fridge/freezer, without an ice-maker, as her 25 year-old refrigerator had started leaking. This Whirlpool fridge has the same outside dimensions, but is much smaller inside (so we are thinking there is better insulation), yet there is not the consistency in cooling (it freezes milk on the "ideal" setting for the fridge; and doesn't freeze food as well in the freezer if you turn down the thermostat). But, worst of all, as others are commenting, is the extremely loud noise. She has never had a fridge make this much noise in her 80+ years. You can hear it from a downstairs (the fridge is upstairs), as well as around a corner to the far end of a long hallway. You do not want to linger in the kitchen at all, or even eat in the kitchen.

Home Depot will do nothing after 30 days, and will turn you back to Whirlpool. Whirlpool tells you you have to pay for a repairman to come out. We just did that, and this is what he said:

1) He services all brands of fridges, and says all of them, built in the last 3-4 years are now made with much cheaper parts, smaller compressors (vs. the previous industrial compressors), needing more fans to cool them, and run much longer to cool, since they are said to be more "energy-efficient", according to the mfr. He told us they are telling customers the same thing over and over again, that the refrigerators are made much more cheaply, and are consistently making much more noise than older models.

2) He claimed that if you purchase the $5k and above priced refrigerators, they are typically more quiet, but all others are very loud.

3) In addition, he told us while the older refrigerators lasted 20-30 years, the new models will only last 10-15 years.

4) We told the repairman that it normally is much louder in the evenings when we are in the kitchen than in the morning, (when he was there). He told us to record it, and email the recording to him, and they could send it to Whirlpool so they had it on file as a complaint, which you could then call and complain further about, but because all new refrigerators and parts are made so cheaply, there is not much recourse.

5) Her refrigerator/kitchen is over a crawl space, which, we were told may amplify the vibration/sound of the fridge. However, this was not an issue with the previous refrigerators. We asked if there were pads that could be used, that don't block the air-flow, but the repairman said he did not know of any.

5) A thought is to contact a Consumer Action Group, such as with some News Teams, to at least make public how poorly and cheaply manufactured the new refrigerators are, and to encourage others to repair their old fridges, if minor issues, rather than buy new. Because, if all of the competition are going towards cheap manufacturing with poor results, it doesn't give customers any good options. Or, if you are a member of Consumer Reports, this is an area they should be magnifying to the public.

It is disgraceful that companies are allowed to operate in such a greedy manner, and offer up such poor quality, with no quality competition, unless you pay 10 times the price, for shorter lifespan products than the past. Keep your older appliances repaired and running as long as possible!

This french door Whrilpool is loud and dose not cool as good as my Kenmore. I bought a thermometer and with the coldest setting shows 40F. You would think new refrigerator would be better. Don't buy Whirlpool refrigerator NEW
by: Cindie

It's a beautiful sunset bronze. Fits perfectly in my space BUT the fresh fan is very noisy, the back of the too shallow shelves freeze, the door squeaks, the ice is too small, the freezer throws fog at you when you open the door. My old whirlpool seems much larger and glad I kept it in the garage. It is beautiful though.

Our brand new whirlpool refrigerator is extremely noisy. Whirring noises, sputtering noises, excessive vibration, just unacceptable. I wish we had not purchased a whirlpool appliance, and I never will again.

Try leveling your refrigerator NEW
by: Rob Garverick

You might be able to eliminate strange noises by properly leveling your refrigerator. Most people in my 8-year-old neighborhood have developer-installed high end Whirlpool refrigerators, and in recent years three of us have been bothered by strange noises when the compressor is running. In my case it was like the high pitched screeching sound crickets make in the woods In other peoples' case it was different annoying sounds. We discovered, however, that the units were not dead level. Placing a level across the top, the bubble was slightly off center. Once we leveled the refrigerators by adjusting their footings (you can Google for instructions - it's easy), the annoying sounds vanished. We can still hear the normal soft hum of the compressor, and weird noises the ice maker occasionally makes, but nothing annoying.

DONT BUY WHIRLPOOL NEW
by: Mental Mike

Thanks rattling ro and everyone else, reading these post makes me realize that my mental instability is in fact due to the refrigerator. I'm afraid to go get a drink because i know opening the door will turn on the fan! If there was a cliff in my backyard I would jump. But I love my family too much. If you want to understand how bad it really is; noise wise, go read the story the tell-tale heart by edgar Allen Poe and that's how nuts I am becoming from the constant vibration rattling noise of this brand new out of the box side by side whirl pool fridge. This goes back to home depot today its obvious whirlpool doesnt care even thou they are fully aware of their shoddy product. Buyer be ware! I end this post as my fridge again is rattling.

Rattled NEW
by: Rattling Ro

We just put in a whirlpool side by side fridge, and the rattling vibration noise emitting from this unit is insane. I turn on the vent by the stove to drown out the sound. There are no feet to lower the unit, that is see. It just rattles and vibrates on the constant. I'm in a pickle because we rent and this is a unit the landlord just put in. I thought jars were rattling and went inside and separated them. I am running a kitchen vent to drown out the sound. Do not buy whirlpool. I have visited several sites and you be shocked at how many people are getting tormented. There was a beat up old GE in there, 20 years old and ran quite and worked like a champ. Why did it have to die! I'm in the livingroom about 40 feet away and I still here it. I can't call the owner and say remove the fridge before I toss it on the front lawn. So I'm here as a warning. Side note it's a nice looking unit, less lighting. Cools down fast. Maintains temp. Freezer is tiny not for a family with children. Also has a water filter which is easily changed. But the noise. Omg... what a shame it's so bad the perks of this dont make it worth keeping.

Noisy Whirlpool. NEW
by: Renee in California

I like everything about my stainless steel side by side refrigerator except the noise. It cycles most of my waking hours and its LOUD. I can hear it in another room. Friends and family have much older old refrigerators which are silent and cycle occasionally for a short time. The noise of their cycle is even quieter. Why in then in 2018, can't Whirlpool make a quiet fridge..
Why do they think they and get away with this and that the consumer will just suffer through it. From all these negative comments it looks like a lot of people are fed up, and will buy another brand as will I. I'm going to call Whirlpool and Home Depot and demand answers.

First and last whirlpool appliance for me NEW
by: Anonymous

WOW. SO I call Whirlpool about this brand new, great looking stainless fridge that we bought a month ago or so and it makes a rattling noise every time the compressor comes on, which is like every five minutes. It's annoying. The woman tells me in a roundabout way that it's normal and that they'll send a technician, but if he finds that it is just how the fridge is designed and there's nothing to repair, I will be charged $149. and that's the type of warranty they have.

I'm incredulous. I suspected maybe she just had a bad attitude because it's in her nature. Or because she has a southern drawl and I don't. But now, finding this site, it looks like that's just what Whirlpool is putting out these days, and this poor lady has to field these calls all day long, probably for a minimum wag much lower than the ones we have here in the Bay Area, and she is probably demoralized to have to work there and take these calls all day long.

First and last time I buy Whirlpool. I'm calling Home Depot now to see if I can get them to take this piece of junk back.

Metallic Vibration from new refirgeratot NEW
by: Tim R

I purchased a new Whirlpool refrigerator from Lowes on August 15th. Its the fridge on top freezer on bottom version. I keep hearing this metallic vibration sound from constant to intermittently. Its driving me nuts and I know this is not normal. So I call Whirlpool customer service and they have a local technician come out. I actually recorded the sound on my phone. He initially said yes, that is not a normal sound. He spends a couple of minutes and I think he wrapped a piece of plastic around something in the back and was then on his merry way. He says vibration sounds from the compressor and coils are normal. It didnt fix the problem and Whirpool says since the technician says its normal thats what they are going with. Lowes refuses to do anything. I will NEVER purchase any Whirpool appliance after their shitty attitude.

$3,100 TOTAL LOSS AT 13 DAYS OLD! NEW
by: Anonymous

Whirlpool WRX986SIHV/00 4 door refrigerator

Purchased new on 8/11/18. Unplugged at the end of the 13th (8/24/18) day due to severe psychological and neurological stress caused by the loud roughly single tone produced by the freezer evaporator fan. The warranty contractor tech said all is normal. I never had a refer that I could hear from my bathroom...WITH THE DOOR SHUT! The unit ran 24/7 which my OWN tech and others say no refer on earth is designed to do. I certainly have never heard one. Not even restaurant commercial units.

I am so grateful for finding this page because it lifted my burden of feeling like maybe I'm just being over sensitive. Well, for a professional musician, hearing a single tone 24/7 until it rings in your sleep is pure torture. Utterly devastating! From Monday 8/20 to Friday 8/24 I LOST 12 POUNDS with no apatite and vomiting until I'd dry heave! I'd go to the kitchen at 2:30am and sure enough, there was the EXACT NOTE! even though the refer could not be heard in my bedroom with the door closed.

Can't say much more because we only ran the bloody thing for about two weeks. Don't buy a Whirlpool refrigerator unless you are either very hard of hearing, or plan to put it in your garage!

Very disappointed in the new Whirlpool Refrig/Freezer. Compressor start up is very noisy.

Nice roomy refrigerator, but noise is annoying & wondering how long before it quits working.
Is there a fix to this problem?

Counter depth Whirlpool refrigerator : DO NOT BUY WHIRLPOOL! NEW

I bought a side by side counter depth Whirlpool refrigerator this past February. It has a fan in the "fresh flow" part that make an awfully loud noise. It sounds like a loud, rattling fan. It is AWFUL. Called Whirlpool. They sent a repairman. He said it was from a bad diffuser. Put a new one in and 2 weeks later it is making the same awful nouse. I HATE, HATE IT! I wish I had my old refrigerator back.

Absolutlely the worst refrigerator I have ever owned NEW
by: Anonymous

This refrigerator has made me sick. I am 70 years old and have never had a problem with a NOISY refrigerator. I do not want to be in my kitchen. It is so unsettling and distressing, it reduced my quality of life. The model is wrs555sihz00. Brand new 2018, The first one was so noisy, I though it was a lemon.
The store replaced it with a second one. I thought this was extremely good service and customer relations on their part.
But, now I realize they must know the reputation of whirlpool noisy fridge and should have steered me away from whirlpool.
I must replace at all cost to save my sanity.
I only wish I had done my due diligence and sought out reviews in advance. I appreciate this outlet to scream out my displeasure.

If only I'd seen these comments before buying new fridge! NEW
by: Anonymous

A month ago the freezer in our old fridge died. We went to Home Depot and then Sears to find a 30" wide white refrigerator with a top freezer and no ice-maker. Thought we'd found just the thing at Sears - a Whirlpool #WRT519SZDW02. It's a big ordeal to make way for a new refrigerator, but had to do it. As soon as it started to run I couldn't believe the loud noise! I thought a new fridge would be quieter than the 20-year-old one that just died, but it sounds like a drone buzzing in the kitchen. We went through the ordeal again in order to put a rubber mat under it but it didn't make any difference in the noise. When I called the saleswoman at Sears she said that's just the way the refrigerator sounds and some people get used to it. I have not gotten used to it! Does anyone have any advice???

Whirlpool; Appliance Junk NEW
by: D. Wick

Just purchased a whirlpool fridge. Outrageous compressor noise from the first time it was plugged in. Customer service people are inept and uninformed. Service tech visit said the compressor noise was typical, while admitting it was loud and stating it was a "Throw away" product. Whirlpool maintains it is not defective....Just noisy and refuses to, "Take it back". Fortunately Home Depot is more reputable than Whirlpool and will pick it up and return the cost of the unit. Whirlpool should state in their appliance description that their refrigerators are intended for purchase by those who are hearing impaired. A complete piece of junk by a disreputable corporation. My first and last purchase of a Whirlpool product. Do yourself a favor... and the grief by avoiding Whirlpool appliances!

Whirlpool WRf535SMBW00 NEW

Worst refrigerator I ever purchased. It has a loud, sharp, ringing noise that goes on and off all day long and everyday. It has always been this way from the day I purchased it. I should have taken it back. Torture is what Whirlpool sells to their customers. I’ll never buy a whirlpool again. Junk and low quality products, just like Samsung.

Very Disappointed NEW
by: Todd_N

I purchased a Whirlpool WRF990SLAM00 refrigerator in the spring of 2015. Immediately, the ice maker would not make ice. I called out a technician who had to replace one of the control boards. 1 year later, the bottom freezer would frost up so bad, the door could not be opened. Again, I called out a tech, but since he could not get the door open, I was told I had to unplug and defrost the unit. I lost all of the food in the freezer. The next tech came out and replaced the gasket, It started frosting up immediately. The next tech replaced the entire front door. Again it frosted up immediately. The next tech replaced every control board in the unit. It fixed the freezer problem but now my refrigerator freezes food. The temp is set to 37 degrees F. I WOULD NEVER PURCHASE A WHIRLPOOL REFRIGERATOR AGAIN!

I bought a Whirlpool WPS235FDAM01. I had opened the door on the store model and I couldn't hear it running. They must have had a different fan in that model. Whirlpool: loud noise - motor runs constatly
by: Anonymous

Just got today a Whirlpool fridge. It has been running all day non-stop. Called the first 48 hours customer service: after 1:50 minutes over the phone, the best they could do was to give me an appointment for 11 calendar days from the time of the call. Terrible customer service. I should have known: I brought already a washer-dryer combo and when it's on it sounds like a huge track is running around my home. But the fridge deal is worse since is almost a 24x7 motor running noise. Shame on you Whirlpool. This brand used to mean something to people. It will be the last time I will purchase your products and will ensure I will impede anyone I know to make the same mistake. You better be able o fix it or I will have to shovel the fridge down your throat since I work hard for my money and have none to waste with your inferior manufacture sold at top price

noisy fridge fix
by: dave f

I recently purchased a whirlpool fridge. A year later it started making a lot of noise, and quit cooling. I called a repairman, (not a whirlpool repairman) because he was the only one that could come that day. He had to deice it before he could get it apart. He checked it out the best he could, admitting he was not very familiar with this type of fridge. It worked well for several weeks then starting acting up again. I read all the bad reviews and lack of customer support and was ready to get another one.(sometimes the noise was unbearable) I decided to call customer support and see if at least they may have an idea how to fix it. They were very helpful, asking if they could send out a repairman at no charge. The man came on time, was very professional, diagnosed problem and fixed it. (faulty thermistor) I was completely satisfied with this. I know that almost anything you buy, auto, major appliance, etc might have a bug or two, but at least give them a chance to fix. I hope this might help somebody.

by: Francis in Canada

Our fridge is 3 years old, started making unbearable noise this Summer, only a one year manufacturer warranty, so Whirlpool says they can send a tech out to diagnose problem $89 for first 15 minutes and $29 every 15 minutes after that !. No apologies for their crappy fridge and I have to shoulder the cost of repair.I will never again buy a Whirlpool anything !

Do not buy a Whirlpool Gold
by: Renee in Washington

Our fridge was purchased about 1.5 years ago from Sears. From day one it was very noisy... we have to adjust the television volume when it comes on! Crazy! It also pools water in the bottom of the fridge, under the bottom freezer basket. This water freezes in big sheets, and then once the 1/4" deep reservoir is one big frozen sheet, water begins to puddle on the floor. This reservoir is not removable - nor is there a removable drip tray under the fridge. In order to chip out the ice you have to snake your hand in around the basket with the drawer in full out position, awkward, energy wasting and a little painful. We chip the sheet of ice out about every 2 days at this point - and the noise has gotten really loud, clicky, thumpy and constant. Too bad we cannot afford to replace this lemon. Too bad Whirlpool couldn't care less.

I wouldn't recommend a bottom freezer at all - the capacity is just too poor. Bottom line - I wouldn't buy another Whirlpool appliance period.

Purchased a wrf535smbn french door with bottom freezer from Lowe's 18 months ago. The high pitched noise has been in the unit since it was new but now is constant.

Whirlpool Refrig drives us crazy!
by: Anonymous

We purchased our WRF900SLAM on 2/19/13 with. 4 yr. extended warranty from Lowes. We have had service calls already 3 times for excessive noise. It's not constant but when it starts it lasts weeks until we can't stand it anymore. We have had a fan replaced each visit, but the last time we were told that if we called for repair again we would have to pay for it ourselves because the refrigerator noise is "normal"! and the fan can't possibly need replaced that often. The repairman also said that he thought a vibration is set up causing the noisy fan. About 2 weeks ago the noise began again (after being quiet for about a year) and now the unit runs almost constantly and does not cool. We finally pulled the plug and called for service. We really liked the look of the fridge, inside and out, but would never buy Whirlpool again!

Noisey Whirlpool Refrigerator
by: Anonymous

Having worked for Whirlpool many years ago I didn't see the need to research the purchase of a new French door bottom mount refrigerator (WRF736SDAW). It didn't take long for me to realize my mistake. The refrigerator's condenser and evaporator motors, as well as the compressor are very loud. I contacted some people familiar with the product and they informed me Whirlpool refrigerators were very noisy. About eight months after my purchase I noticed a loud machinery motor type sound coming from the refrigerator. A Sears technician came out and told be this was a diffuser motor and it was normal. When I questioned him about the frequency and high level of sound I was informed that's how Whirlpool refrigerators sound. A couple months later the sound became louder and more frequent. Whirlpool sent out one of their service technicians who basically said the same thing. A short time after that service call the refrigerator started making a loud popping noise. I called Whirlpool and told them I was dissatisfied with the product and asked for a pro-rated exchange, they denied my request and told me to contact Sears. On the telephone Sears said they would do a pro-rated exchange but I had to go to the Sears store. When I arrived at the store where I purchased the product they said they didn't do pro-rated exchanges but would check with corporate and call me back. I've never heard back from Sears. I needed to purchase three new appliances for my home. I did my research and bought GE. I strongly urge anyone considering purchasing a Whirlpool appliances to reconsider. Whirlpool's response to design flaws and poor quality is to call it "normal sounds". Buyer beware of this company and its products - unless you enjoy a barrage of loud machinery type noises.

Lousy Whirlpool Refridgerator
by: Anonymous

Just purchased this new Whirlpool 20.5 cubic foot top freezer fridg. for our vacation home. Purchased from Lowes in Port Charlotte Florida a week ago. The vacation ended that day. This thing is very noisy and runs about 30 minutes of every hour. We have tried everything we can think of to make it more quiet. You can hear it run in every corner of our home. How can Whirlpool an old trusted name dump this junk on people? Lowes tells me it will be another week before a repair man can come out to take a look at it. I would send this monster back tomorrow if I knew what else to buy that would be quiet. So sorry we got rid of the old fridg.

Noisy !!
by: BfloAce

I had two WRF535SMBM fridges. I LOVED the look and performance. I also got a fantastic deal on a black Monday sale - $900 . I hated the fact that I had to return it, The compressor noise was not worth the money I saved. I thought I could get use to it, but after 2 units and 2 months, I had to return it. The volume might have been acceptable if it wasn't a whining buzzing sound. I'm currently working out of coolers until I can find a reasonably quiet fridge.

Any lawyers wanting to represent us in a class-action lawsuit against Lowes?
by: Anonymous

We bought the Gold Series Whirlpool fridge (Model WRF990SLAM00) in December 2013. A few months after its first repair, (dripping on the top left inside of the fridge), which happened within the first year and was covered by the manufacturers warranty, it started to make an incredibly loud whirring sound that kept us up at night. Our bedroom is upstairs and far away from our kitchen, and I had to sleep with earplugs to not hear the noise. We tested the noise on a decibel app and it came in between 66-70. A normal fridge noise level should be around 52 decibels. We had a repairman come out and he replaced a fan even though he told me it wasn't going to fix the problem. Wait, what? After he replaced the fan and the whir continued, we called Lowes' extended warranty again, and they sent out a different company: 1-800-Appliance. The second guy replaced two kits and found some issue with the ice maker, which we were not even aware of, but the noise remained, and he then had the gall to say it was a normal noise. If it was normal, wouldn't it have been making that noise the first year we had it? We had 1-800-Appliance come out again and he determined he couldn't fix it, so Lowes sent another guy from the same company, and he replaced the same fan that the first guy replaced, which was clearly not the problem. Three perfectly good fans were wasted. BTW, the repairman who said the noise was "normal" told us that the fridge had a part that was made to be replaced after purchase because if Whirlpool had the part at the point of sale, the fridge would not meet the Energy Star standards. Hello, lawsuit! After three repairs for the same problem and five visits that did not fix the problem, we were told Lowes would issue us a return order in three days. Finally! Not so fast ...one week later, no one called, so I called them and then Lowes denied having told us that! We gave them the name of the person who told us they would take the fridge back, but the woman on the other end said she had no record of that (how convenient) and, despite the California lemon law requiring only three attempts at a repair, they would require yet another attempt by one of their repairmen. She told me that if he determined the noise was abnormally loud and not repairable, then she could contact the manufacturer and go from there. So they sent a guy from the first company out and he wrote down that the fridge was not repairable and was very noisy. He said that should take the fridge back at that point. My husband called Lowes several days later after not being contacted by them and they told him that they need to send a different repairmen out from 1-800-Appliance and that only 1-800-Appliance could determine if we could get a refund. If that was true, then why send the other company out? By the way, the second guy sent out by 1-800-Appliance wrote down that the noise was very loud and wasn't fixed by his repair. But the notes Lowes said they received from him didn't say that at all. They told me that he wrote that the noise level was normal. I am starting to think there is collusion between Lowes and 1-800-Appliance. Something very wrong here. So, six visits later and horrible customer service from both Lowes and 1-800-appliance, we are now being told that the "repairs" need to be 30 days apart from each other before they will issue a return. If the cause of the noise was never actually repaired, then why do we have to wait a month between repairs? We continue to jump through the hoops that Lowes keeps throwing our way, but it is now clear that they have no intention of taking the fridge back. The fridge is less than two years old, and we have the extended warranty. We couldn't take the noise any further because it felt like it was causing hearing loss and after several months of that horrible sound we were both on edge, so we bought an amazingly quiet fridge from Pacific Sales, and they assured us that they would not do to us what Lowes did. Pacific Sales pride themselves with having good customer service. Lowes seems to have taken delight in lying to us, selling us a lemon, and then not righting a wrong. We have moved the loud piece of shi* into our garage, and if Lowes continues to change the rules of a return and act in collusion with 1-800-appliance, probably in hopes that we will simply throw in the towel, then at least we don't have to hear that horrible sound in the meantime. If they don't do the right thing and take back the fridge, then we will simply keep calling out a repairmen to "fix" the problem. We have three more years of our warranty, and if Lowes doesn't do the right thing, we will make them pay for this one way or another. Viva la revolucion!!

WhirlPOOP WRF989 Refrigerator
by: Ron G

11 service calls in 23 months. One of the biggest piles of junk I have ever purchased. Abysmal engineering, no one cares at Whirlpool. Promises made and broken, broken just like their junky appliances. CEO's should be forced to own these unreliable, noisy, clunking, whirring, coffee grinding, high pitched noise making, water leaking, freon leaking, icing up, wastes of natural resources. Everyone who visits here says what is all that noise and they leave my house knowing what refrigerator they would NEVER consider. Great public relations putting this crap out and turning a cold shoulder to the poor fool who put faith in Whirlpool. Cesspool is more like it. They should be ashamed, I am for trusting this company based on what I thought WAS a great manufacturer. DON'T do it, you WILL be sorry..

Don't buy Whirlpool refrigerator
by: Nancy Ramírez from Colombia

I bought a Whirlpool refrigerator. It's too noisy. It's now 45 days asking them to take it back and they just tell me tomorrow, tomorrow and sent an expert that says itr's normal. ¿Normal? NO it's a bad refrigerator. They will come today just one hour from now. According to their answer i will write again to you and give all information of Brand and others. Thanks for the opportunity to inform people not to live the bad experience I'm living now.

Noise on freezer
by: Andrews

I just have 4 days with my new Whirpool French 4 doors. Model WRX988SIBM. its cost me around $2,000 which I consider expensive. I find out once installed at home that is has a high constant NOISE. I find out it is coming from the freezer intside fan. even I read some bad and good reviews I give it a change, but this noise kills all the beauty and features of this refrigerator. I am considering now for sure send it back

lousy fridge
by: Anonymous

I never have heard such a loud fridge. (This is a Whirlpool, top freezer fridge.) It makes loud popping noises. It's sad that they don't make reliable products anymore. We pay a good price, then they only last for a few years and we have to live with the question "when are they going to explode?" When I read the reviews on the other brand of fridges they have the same problem.

Disappointed with Whirlpool
by: Anonymous

Just got Whirlpool Refrigerator yesterday and the continuous noise was so loud, I had to leave the room. I could still hear it even though I went 1 flight up.

Having had a previous Whirlpool that wasn't noisy, I bought Whirlpool again. I think what is happening is that Whirlpool has made some of their refrigerators Energy Efficient and the result of that was noisy refrigerators. They shouldn't be selling Energy Efficient Refrigerators until they devise a way to also make them Energy Efficient and QUIET. Refrigerator noise should be regulated, so they have to make them quiet.

I would return the Whirlpool, but I don't know if any other Energy Efficient Refrigerators are quiet.

No more Whirlpool/Maytag appliances EVER
by:

I bought a washer, stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher by Maytag. The washer does not so much as cover the surface of the laundry and has rusted, the stove takes 30-40 minutes to reach 350 degrees and the self cleaning using water system is ridiculous, the electronic panel on the dishwasher had to be replaced, and the frig has been repaired 3x ( once it leaked, another when the Maytag repairman came out he installed a part he said was free for the issue related to the leak per Maytag, and finally the water pump quit working on the fridge. It's cost us over $300 so far to repair our 2 year old appliances. DON'T BUY MAYTAG / WHIRLPOOL

Model WRF990SLAM00
by: Teri

Bought the fridge in Aug 2013. The first problem was the freezer door was not on the track and would not shut properly. The Lowe's guy came out & fixed it promptly. I'll forgive that one.

Second, the ice maker was leaking water which would freeze underneath the compartment. So icicles were always hanging in the fridge. Lowe's sent a guy who could not fix it. Whirlpool sent an appliance repair person. Fixed quickly. But still.

Now, at 11 months of the 12 month warranty, the closed system has a freon leak. WP sent a different repair company from the first one. They had to go back & check with whirlpool whether to gas it up (its a closed system, so the leak will continue)or whether to replace the system. Repair co said part on back order. I have been without fridge/freezer for over a week.

I called whirlpool about it. they are sending the part directly to me & I will call the repair co when it arrives.

When does whirlpool replace the lemon? And yes, I am going to buy the extended warranty!!

Scary Noisefrom freezer
by: Anonymous

Our whirpool refrigirator is just less than a month old. I got scared when it makes some ice. The first time I heard a loud noise in my house, I thought there was an intruder in my house, OMG! It was the freezer that makes a loud noise when making ice! How come the noise is so loud ???? Hehehe

DON'T BUY THE CHEAP MODEL! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
by: Anonymous

I just bought a new one because all my other appliances were Whirlpool. When they came to install the ice maker, I asked them to check it because it was noisy, and they said they're all that way because everything is towards the front nowadays instead of at the back of the frame. If I would have spent $1500 instead of $500, I would have gotten a whisper quiet one.

Loud Noise

To:Whirlpool

RE: French Door Refrigerator Model: WRF990SLAM00 –
I am very dissatisfied with this refrigerator. The fans motors are very loud and noisy. The unit did not make these noises on the showroom floor. Calling these noises normal in the manual (that you only see after you have made the purchase) is clearly a deceptive sales practice. The possible cause paragraph in the troubleshooting section is ridiculous. “The compressor in your new refrigerator regulates temperature more efficiently while using less energy, and operates quietly. Due to this reduction in operating noise you may notice unfamiliar noises that are normal”.

How do you define normal? Calling the noise and condensation problems with this appliance “NORMAL” doesn’t make it normal or acceptable. I feel that I have been misled and cheated.

Whirlpool Refrigerator Making Banging Sounds
by: Anonymous

Our Whirlpool Refrigerator 2009 model Gx2fhdxvy00 constantly has loud banging noise in the defrost cycle.

The Whirlpool service tech stated nothing can be done with this issue.

This unit is French door with freezer at the bottom. He said that the freezer lines are loose in the wall and bangs in styrofoam insulation.

The banging noise is extremely loud. I will not purchase another product manufactured by Whirlpool.

I agree, DON'T BUY a Whirlpool Appliance!!
by: Anonymous

I have A Whirlpool refrigerator from 03 model # gb2shkxlt01 that had a problem with the fan, freezer kept cold upper part of fridge warm , food spoiled.

Now just two weeks later we are having same problem.

Apparently if the door is opened too frequently or if it is not SLAMMED SHUT the upper fan gets clogged with ice and the lower fan stops working to cool the upper area or something like that.

I guess I need to know if the life cycle of a frigerator is only about 8 yrs anyway. I don't want to fix again and throw out more food. totally disgusted.

I completely agree...don't buy a Whirlpool!!

Whirlpool Repair Service & Customer Service is LOUSY!!!
by: Anonymous

Whirlpool Repair Service & Customer Service is LOUSY!!!

You get an automated system that uses voice recognition for the prompt answers...and when you keep trying to yell into it "CUSTOMER SERVICE", it says, "I understand you want customer service, but I still need to ask you some general questions", and you have to answer all the prompt questions anyway. Then it transfers you to customer service, which keeps you on hold indefinitely...no wait time, just a recording that comes on saying "we are experiencing heavy call volume, continue to hold the line".

It's ridiculous! I will never purchase another Whirlpool product EVER regardless of the cost! All I was trying to find out was how much to send a technician for repair service...I still don't know...I'm sure it will be a lot!

Noisy Whirlpool Refrigerator !!!
by: Anonymous

I purchased a 2010 Noisy Whirlpool French Door Refrigerator Model GI5FSAXVYO2 from Lowes and it has been in my home for only 5 days.

Although I have had no problems with the unit cooling properly, the fan connected with the freezer is extremely noisy.

Apparently, the new 2010 units are on a 35 minute cycle and the freezer compressor/fan/motor is constantly coming on and going off. The noise is extremely distracting and I am going to attempt to return the unit to Lowes today. (Wish me luck)

PS.......I live in a small condo, where the kitchen, living and dining room are all located on the same floor. Therefore, there is no place to escape the noise.

Don't Buy a Whirlpool Fridge
by: Anonymous

Don't buy a Whirlpool fridge as they are very noisy! It sounds like I have a chicken coop in my house.

If that isn't enough they also have very lousy service! I have been waiting 5 weeks for them to return my call even though I have left them messages every few days.

I don't recommend buying a Whirlpool refrigerator!

Horrible Whirlpool Customer Service
by: Anonymous

I bought a Whirlpool Gold French Door frig March 2009. I started having problems with it within 2 months. The frig compartment started freezing all my food and liquids.

I called customer service and they sent out the "repair" man. The man left without fixing the problems and would never return my calls or give me a receipt. Since then, the same problem has occurred 3 more times.

Customer service passed me on to 3 different supervisors and to this date they will not return my calls and the problem still has not been fixed or the frig replaced. I leave messages at least twice daily and have finally called the retail store and their manager is also trying to contact Whirlpool corporate office to no avail.

DO NOT BUY WHIRLPOOL PRODUCTS UNLESS YOU WANT TO DEAL WITH THE HEADACHE!!!!!!!!

whirlpool gold
by: Anonymous

After 15 years owning an excellent refrigerator, we have purchased not 1, but 2 WHIRLPOOL GOLD TOP MOUNT refrigerators.

The first one: freezer did not work properly ... went from below 0 to 40-50, even when we were NOT home. The second one: freezer was at 40 last night -- after we were out the entire day. Used refrigerator portion in the a.m., and in the p.m., we opened it for ice cream.

40 degrees. what is going on? DON'T DARE TO FREEZE FOODS!
